YeahBuddy, I feel that way too. tulane was my first college app and it is disheartening.

well, there’s the student I was going to tell you about, YB: things change! You’re both victims of your own not wanting to bother anyone. that’ll show you! a little less oil, a little more squeak next time! ;+) good luck. I hope you both find happiness wherever you go to school.

got in today!!

My D received a call from admissions tonight congratulating her on admission and offering assistance with questions and financial aid.
She is currently away at a fly-in to Oberlin, and I nicely told them so. The woman was very nice and said she understood that this is a hard decision and long process.
Although it feels good to be courted, I am slightly guilt-ridden as Tulane is a safety choice for my D and so many others here are very passionate about attending.
I am wondering if this is a normal process for Tulane? My D applied RD but was accepted relatively early, based on others’ posts.

Parents get a grip. There’s a lot of good advice on this forum but there is also quite a bit of self serving bull. Please remember that there are quite a few stressed out H.S. seniors that read this and I’m sure no parent would want to add to that stress.

congrats, becca!

picktails - Not sure how normal it is to get in RD this early. Maybe they thought she applied EA. It happens. Just as it sometimes happens the other way, where a student applies EA but accidentally gets input as RD. Usually the student catches the latter because Gibson will post the message as “We will have a decision by April 1”. When the student sees that they know an error was made.

Anyway, it is like we talked about earlier today. It is an imperfect process, where Tulane does their best to go after students they think are interested and are a great fit. On the whole it works, but of course the exceptions both ways stand out and get posted on forums like this.

Has your D been able to visit Tulane? I know they are always hoping that can happen, and it can help with the decision making. Just a thought.

how can tulane be a safety for anyone…??

fallenchemist- my D’s Gibson account only says that her application is complete and that the admissions committee is working to render a decision as soon as possible. It has said the same thing since early November when she applied EA. There is nothing there about getting a decision by Dec. 15th or April 1st or any date. Do you think there is a problem? Have others had specific decision dates on their Gibson accounts?

well, outofit, do you know how hard it is to get CC to type your username? it keeps wanting to change it to outfit. No, what i wanted to say was that Tulane can be a safety for those students whose parents have so much money that they will pay full freight and whose scores are such that tulane would be happy to have them. there are plenty of them around.

It could also be a safety for students that live in Louisiana and meet the specified requirements.

SWENSIV - they used to have dates, maybe they changed it this year. Thanks for letting me know. Hmmmm, there must be a way you can be sure they know you are EA and that a mistake wasn’t made…Unfortunately there is no way for me to tell now. Maybe they say “As soon as possible” for EA and give the April 1 date for RD. That may be what I remembered, I just got it slightly wrong. I just know for sure that up to last year, at least, people were able to know that they had accidentally been classified as RD because of that message.

Should I be worried if I have yet to hear back from Tulane? I applied the Sunday before the deadline. When should in expect to hear back?

Does anyone know if a lot of people receive their admissions decisions on the 15th or if they come in at a constant rate. Are most of the decisions that are released on the 15th deferrals? I’m so nervous when I applied I thought I had like a 50% chance of getting in but after seeing the stats of people on here that got accepted I don’t think I can get in.

As far as Tulane as a “safety” (I have always hated that term, and even more now because college admission at any highly selective school is unpredictable. The term “likely” is somewhat better), it is indeed not a good idea to think admission is a given, with the exception dolphnlvr points out. Even though Tulane has not been a state school since the late 1800’s (Historical tidbit, Tulane is the only state school to ever go private), it has maintained a close relationship to Louisiana and its students. But there is no doubt that many students with stats in the top 1-2% nationally often think of Tulane that way, and perhaps there was a time it was far more true than now. These days, as we can obviously see, that is simply not the case.

Swimmer - positive admissions decisions will continue right up to the deadline, as will deferrals. Since you were so close to the deadline, there is no inference in your not hearing back yet.

Jackerman - same idea for you. You cannot look at high stat people and think that means you will not get in. As we have talked about a lot on here, there is far more to it than stats. Hang in there, try to relax. Sorry to be corny, but what will be, will be. Nothing you can do to change things at the moment, just let it play out. I am sure you have applications in at several excellent schools. Maybe it will be Tulane, maybe not, but you will be going to college somewhere good, I assure you.

I feel for all of the other students out there waiting for a decision. This thread can drive me a little crazy at times, too. I have been waiting since October and I check Gibson every day…at least the wait will be over soon, whatever the decision may be. Hoping for the best and trying to stay positive at this point!

“binding a student to a school without a financial aid package is pretty hard to do”

Note that schools don’t try to do this at ED time; you don’t need to decide on the ED offer until a few weeks after you get the financial aid package (if you asked for aid).

Thanks for that piece of advice. That makes me worry less.

How do I know if a decision has been made and is posted in my Gibson account? Do I get an email or do I just have to check my account?

There is no email notifying you that a decision has been made. You just have to keep checking Gibson or wait for the letter to arrive by mail.
