We are ecstatic!

Our daughter was accepted to Tulane and was awarded a $30,000/year merit scholarship.

Her stats:
ACT 34
Weighted GPA 4.6
Unweighted GPA 3.8
Quality “Why Tulane?” essay
Decent ECs.

We have never visited Tulane and we are wondering if the Honors Weekend is enough of a visit or if we should schedule a visit for January as well.

Your opinions on this are very much appreciated!

Hmmm, I am of two minds on this. I certainly think you cannot visit New Orleans often enough. But for the express purpose of seeing Tulane, the Honors Weekend should be enough. Ideally, you could tack on a day before and after the weekend to take in the areas around campus and parts of the rest of NOLA. That is probably the most efficient. But if you cannot do that, certainly going in January wouldn’t be a waste. If it comes to that, I would use the January visit to take the campus tour and use the rest of the time to be a tourist, because the Honors Weekend will have a campus tour as well, and coupled with the rest of the activities that weekend you and your daughter will leave with sufficient information, and more information than you would get if you did a January visit to Tulane instead of the Honors Weekend visit.

I guess what I am trying to say is that Tulane is a somewhat unique school in that New Orleans is almost part of the campus, more so than at many schools. So while it would sound silly to go in January and not even go to Tulane but instead just get to know New Orleans knowing that you are going to Honors Weekend in March or April, it actually wouldn’t be so ridiculous. But of course part of getting to know NOLA would be getting to know the area around Tulane, so naturally you would visit the campus. Just know that it would be a bit repetitious with Honors Weekend. But it’s a very nice campus and maybe seeing it a second time will give you a chance to notice details that were missed the first time.

Did I ramble enough?

Almost forgot: Congratulations on the acceptance and excellent scholarship!

I was gong to suggest adding a day or two to Honors Weekend to explore the city and the area around Tulane. April in New Orleans is such a lovely time. I don’t know the date of Honors Weekend but I’m assuming it is NOT the same weekend as French Quarter Fest or hotels would be impossible to find…

My daughter was admitted the weekend before Thanksgiving with the Presidential Scholarship and invitation to join the Honors Program. We are looking forward to visiting in January.

She found out Sunday that she was also admitted to Case Western…and the odd thing was the scholarship they offered her was just a smidge higher than Tulane’s. Yesterday she got acceptance to Depauw. Their merit offer will come within a month…but I did think colleges did not share info…now I kind of wonder if they do? She has not even finished all her apps yet but from my own reading (&the climate) I am rooting for Tulane

Congrats to all and good luck to those who have been deferred.

Thanks all for the suggestions! (Ramble on fallenchemist…it’s all welcome)

We are leaning towards one visit in March (Tulane Top Scholars Weekends are March 16/17 or April 6/7), as multiple trips with airfare and hotel can get expensive. So, we are thinking that adding a day before or after the March 16/17 visit might make more sense. Hopefully March is as nice in NOLA as is April?

oh you will be in for a treat. That’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend! It’s quite the weekend in NOLA! Weather should be ideal and lots of fun. Your daughter will be busy all weekend I assume? There are parades, where the riders throw not only beads, but cabbages and other produce for your Ham and cabbage stew!

(Edited because I said “lots of fun” a dozen too many times, lol)

Cooper: Mid-March is often nicer than April. Sometimes the warm weather comes a little early and mid-April is already hot. Mid-March is usually extremely pleasant. Mid to upper 70’s. Of course in New Orleans at any time of year there is always a chance of rain. But April 6/7 should still be pretty nice, at least odds are.

I think the one visit plan with an extra day or two is the way to go.

dolphnlvr - I think the FQ fest is usually end of April. In fact it usually overlaps with finals, which is a bummer.

ChocoChipMom - Colleges definitely do not collude. They certainly look at each others programs and decide to emulate them. Congrats on her offer from Case! It’s a fine school. In fact, we “stole” President Cowen from them, he was a high level administrator there. I remember last year there was a student struggling with wanting to go to Tulane, her parents wanted her to go to Case. She personally thought the atmosphere at Case was not as friendly, but that was just her take. I am definitely not putting them down. I have mostly heard good things about the quality of Case academics, especially engineering.

FQF is in early April, the end of April is the first weekend of Jazz Fest. Next year FQF is April 10-13

Ah, you are right!! I mixed up FQ Fest and Jazz Fest. Just proves how many “fests” there are!! Thanks for fixing that.

My S was recently admitted with a 3.5 UW gpa and 30 ACT. He has now withdrawn his application because he is an athlete who was being heavily recruited to many schools (but curiously, not Tulane) and he has now verbally committed to the College of William and Mary and was accepted ED there. Older S is currently a senior at Tulane who willl graduate in May. He loves it there. Will definitely miss having an excuse to visit New Orleans! Happy to answer any questions people have.

My 2nd daughter just accepted EA and is thrilled. Stats were below what I see on CC and as follows;

Good California based public HS, SAT high 1800’s, GPA 3.6 UW with TONS of XC’s/Leadership and she did ALL the supplemental essays and Comm Service app. Caucasian, not first gen and Varsity sports but not recruited. Met with AdCom, follow up letters, additional LORs, the works. No merit $. In short she really put effort into it and it worked!

To those who were deferred - hang in there and show TONS of love for TU! Good luck to all

Thanks again for all of the additional info!

Can anyone clarify if the Honors weekend usually includes an overnight stay on campus for our daughter? We have the letter but it doesn’t provide much detail. Or, if there is another thread that contains these details please point us there.

It’s hard for the parents not to get excited about a night out in NOLA on St. Patrick’s Day (or any) weekend.

Thanks!

Here is the tentative schedule I found on the Tulane website
[Tulane Admission: Visit](http://www.admission.tulane.edu/honorsweekend/schedule-tent.php)

Since the Honors weekends activities are on Sunday and MOnday, I’d pad the trip on the arriving side as to experience the full St. Patty’s weekend!

Cooper - yes, the registration starts like 10 AM Sunday, IIRC, an hour of welcome and info talks, break for a tour, lunch with faculty members, then there are 3 sets of talks about 30 minutes each on a fun academic topic like history of jazz in NOLA, nanotechnology research at Tulane, that kind of thing, then I think the parents kind of disappear (if they were there at all, some kids come alone). Then a gelato social, dinner, and traditionally they have then taken them to the Rock and Bowl. Look it up, it’s great. Overnight on campus, then after breakfast they attend classes and get advising and register from 8 AM until 3 PM. I would think typically a student would try and sit in on 2 classes, get the advising and register for fall classes, and of course get lunch. There are various open houses and receptions for parents while all this is going on. Anywhere from 3 until 5 PM you and your child can reconnect and take off.

That has traditionally been the schedule. Of course it is subject to change.

Edit - or you can just read dolphnlvr’s link, lol.

mom222 - just curious, what sport are talking about? But since he applied and was accepted ED to W&M it’s really moot about other schools and acceptances. Congrats for his future there, very exciting!

FC, S is a track and field athlete. Recruiting is a different animal depending on whether you are dealing with Ivy League, NESCAC, D1, D2, or D3 schools. It is fairly typical that an athlete will apply ED once an offer is made for a D1 school in order to lock in the spot and sometimes, an athletic scholarship. Ivy League schools can issue a likely letter and encourage EA because there is no National signing day for those schools. What was unusual in our experience about Tulane was that despite a few attempts to contact and call coaches, S never received any response. One attempt was a year ago when we were going to be in town and wanted to meet with the coach. We did not experience this anywhere else and I have met with more coaches in the last 6 months than you might imagine. Most are very eager to meet with you and show you their facilities. All is good though - S had many opportunities and he is very excited with the end result.

Yes, all is good. It does seem odd that you got no response at all. I know several of the CC posters have talked in the past about meeting with the coaches. Maybe they don’t have any scholarships available this year for the men? Don’t know, they should at least contact you to let you know whatever the situation is. Disappointing in that respect, but as you say he ended up at a great school. Gorgeous campus, one of my other favorites.

Thanks so much fallenchemist and dolphnlvr6 for the great info. The weekend looks excellent!

We just booked our flight!

Hey everyone,
I was accepted a week after I sent in my app on the deadline with a $20,000/year scholarship. Here’s my stats:

30 ACT, 92.78 GPA
Tons of EC’s (Vice President of NHS, President of a club at my High School, member of several other clubs, member and volunteer at 5 non-profit organizations, 1000+ community service hours)
I’ve had a very rigorous course load over the years. This year I’m taking 5 AP’s (English Lang, French, Macroeconomics, Biology, Psychology), along with Physics and Pre-Calculus.
I’m also a Hispanic/White (bi-racial) Male from New York.

Hope this helps next years applicants!
