FC, my son has not visited campus. He was a D-3 recruited athlete in the NESCAC, who this fall (after recruiting visits) decided that these small schools were just way too small for what he really wanted out of college. So now he has applied to larger schools that are better balanced in terms of academics, athletics, diversity and cultural activities … but where he will not be a recruited athlete. For Tulane’s admit profile, he is in the 50th percentile range for SAT stats but above average in terms of academic GPA. He has significant community service and is an accomplished athlete (3 years All-Conference and HM All-State; team captain; 4-year starter). Without an interview, it is difficult for him to explain his situation and why he did not visit campus this fall. I think an email to the regional admissions person is a good idea, plus, his recommendation letter from his high school coach as part of his application package will help confirm the level of his athletic accomplishments / leadership. A visit this spring is possible, but not this winter. Is there no way Tulane will take his interest seriously unless he visits pre-decision? Thanks

He does not have to visit, I was just wondering if he had or was planning to. Needless to say, visits present opportunities for more contact, but they are not required by any means. Since his interest in Tulane developed a little bit later than these other schools that he has now moved away from, I am guessing he also did not attend the local sessions Tulane held in various areas. I am guessing you are from the Northeast, since you visited Dartmouth and Amherst.

What this means is that right now Tulane has no way of knowing he really does possess strong interest in the school and why. But everything you have said on here makes for a reasonable story as to why he came to the “party” a bit late. He should put all of that into a communication to his admissions officer, which he should send fairly soon. The highlights would be how he moved his choices from D-3 schools to schools like Tulane, how Tulane became a school of great interest to him, and why after talking to these current students and studying the school it is of more interest to him that other, similar schools. He could then follow that up in a few weeks with a phone call if he wanted, set up ahead of time with the purpose being to let the admissions officer get to know him better and to let him ask some questions as well, if he has any. Beyond that, it is hard for me to think of anything else he can do.

Sage advice, FC. We have a good friend who went to Tulane and 6-7 students from his high school matriculate to Tulane each year, so he has an excellent idea of what Tulane is all about … but unfortunately, not vice-versa. Will let you know how it turns out for him. Thanks for all of your posts to these threads. I don’t contribute many comments to CC, given I am out of my element … things have changed so much from when my generation applied to college.

True dat! I suspect we are of a similar generation. It is completely different now.

If you’re deferred do they still post a decision on Gibson for the regular decision round, or do they just send a letter?

They will do both.

Hello I was recently accepted to Tulane(SCEA).I am a senior at a HS in NOLA and I was wondering what my chances are of receiving a merit aid with a 30 Composite ACT score. I am planning on retaking the ACT next month because my 28 didn’t get me any award
Would anyone happen to know if a 30 can get me anything? My parents will help me pay for tuition if I recieve a 15k-20k award…thanks

That is impossible to say for a couple of reasons. The main one is that no one on here can know what the decision makers in admissions will do with any given applicant. The second is that it is based on much more than your ACT score. There is your GPA, the difficulty level of the courses you took, what they are looking for to diversify the various talents and other personal qualities the student body has, etc.

This is all summarized in the blog of one of the senior admissions officers, Jeff Schiffman. [Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff: Dear Tulane- Send $!](http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2012/12/dear-tulane-send.html) He just reposted this blog from last year. I recommend you read it carefully and follow it closely.

When will they start releasing acceptances for the deferred applicants? What is the earliest it could be?

Hmmmm, I really am not sure. As best I can recall, they started making decisions again around mid-February in past years. But the majority of decisions came at the end, in late March.

Hello folks, I was a regular decision applicant and just received my acceptance letter today! I’m not sure if it’s early or if other admissions decisions are being released, I did turn in my application back in November (even though it was for the RD not the EA pool) if that makes a difference. My acceptance was on the portal and in paper form.

Admitted to the honors college with Presidential Scholar Award ($30,000 a year)
Stats: 2390 SAT(800w/790m/800cr) 4.31GPA (highest possible at my school), #1 class rank, lots of leadership, ECs and a few research internships in science stuff related to my major

Best of luck for everyone else!

Wow, great news neuromajor. And great stats. It is kind of a shame you didn’t apply EA so that you could have also applied for the full tuition and full ride scholarships. But you must have had your reasons.

wow! wonder what took them so long to make up their minds, neuromajor. hope you and my D will be taking some of the same classes together. have you yet visited Tulane?

I applied SCEA to Stanford (deferred which is odd, they only defer 8% of the pool unlike other ivies, and then take 15% of deferrals as admits so we’ll see in late march), which meant I couldn’t apply to the bigger scholarships. In retrospect, knowing the deferral anyways I probably would have applied to a lot of EA schools instead but oh well. Considering I applied RD, they probably didn’t even look at the application until after they finished their EA applicants, which might explain the time. I haven’t visited yet, but I will in late February, coincidentally during mardi gras, to visit a friend who lives in New Orleans anyways. I’m looking forwards to visiting.

Because students with stats like neuromajor usually have schools like Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Yale, and as turns out to be the case, Stanford as their top picks, and Tulane is a bit further down their list. Frankly, I am a bit surprised that they went ahead and made an acceptance decision at this stage, since she is still hoping Stanford (and potentially some other schools like MIT?) says yes. Would a $30,000 scholarship be enough to persuade a student to attend Tulane over some of these other schools? That. of course, depends on the student and their situation.

People sometimes get uncomfortable hearing this reality, but of course there is nothing at all to be uncomfortable about. Tulane is a wonderful school with great students, great faculty and some exciting research opportunities. And of course in an amazing city. But it doesn’t have the international reputation or research breadth of a school like Stanford in most areas. Having options among schools such as we have in this country makes us very strong. Obviously, it wouldn’t be a very good thing if students had to have credentials like neuromajor’s in order to attend a great research university. Tulane has excellent students doing some amazing things in some great, innovative programs.

neuromajor - Best of luck in your decision making and your visit to Tulane. Mardi Gras is not the most representative time to visit, as you might imagine. Hopefully you can still get a feel for the school as it more normally would be. If you don’t mind sharing, what other schools did you apply to and what other acceptances have you received?

I just got notified that I was accepted into Tulane from their deferred list!

I just got notified that I was accepted into Tulane from their deferred list!

I also just got notified that I was accepted from the deferral list! NOLA here we goooo!

How were you notified?

It will be on your Gibson page first, then confirmation will arrive in the snail mail.
