Class of 2018 Decisions

Over the last few years, I have toured dozens of schools running the gamut from Ivies (Harvard, Penn, Dartmouth, Cornell), to smart privates (Lehigh, Hopkins, Tulane, Emory), and tech schools (MIT, RIT, GaTech). Every one said they are a work hard, play hard school. It’s basically a cliche that applies to nearly every college.

A special shout out to FC who has plenty to brag about with respect to his daughter. Modesty is overrated! She does Tulane proud!!! A coveted position with the State Department as well as top tier graduate school admissions are no small feats.

Thanks, Vitrac. I think it ties in well with Chardo’s comment as well, which is absolutely correct. All universities that have students that are academically strong are “work hard, play hard” schools. It is easily the most overused cliché out there. Of course there are some schools that are only “play hard”, in the sense that it is much easier for the academically gifted to do well without doing as much work. The competition is simply not as strong, and classes are generally graded on a curve, even when they aren’t officially designed that way. It is well known that exams are usually designed with the average capabilities of the students in mind. Same for how papers are graded.

But no school in the top group, which I would define as those where the average student is in the top 10-15% of the overall stat pool, is only a “play hard” school if the student is going to have a strong academic record. Or in the more positive slant, students that truly work hard, no matter how much they play, can achieve outstanding outcomes at Tulane.

Thanks for the info chemist. I am looking forward to hearing about my financial aid package. When does that happen typically? My parents have done their part but are unsure.

Often the FA packages don’t come until late March, occasionally even into the first couple days of April. But typically mid to late March.

Need feedback from other recently admitted students. We want to reserve a spot for a Destination Tulane day - we’ve never visited the campus and are all excited to see it. According to D’s accepted student Gibson portal: “Admitted students will receive information on how to access a personalized admitted student website approximately two weeks after they are admitted to Tulane”

We’ve not yet received this and I’m afraid to book expensive plane tickets to NOLA without first reserving the campus visit - since there is only one or two dates that currently work for us. We’ve already received the acceptance letter in the mail and the info wasn’t there.

Should I just call admissions and take care of it that way? Is there anything else of immediate interest on that personalized website we need to be aware of?
Thanks

The easiest thing to do is go to the admitted student website, tell them “forgot password” or however they phrase it, and they will send a new one and you will be in. Then you can sign up for Destination Tulane.

Thanks fallenchemist, but I’ve tried and it doesn’t recognize the email address, so I assume they’ve not yet set it up for my daughter. I guess we’ll just call and take care of it.

I was notified of my acceptance two weeks ago after getting deferred (I applied EA to apply for the DEan’s/Paul/Global).

I was initially offered 30k/year. But just about four days ago, I was notified of the Global Scholarship (full tuition).

Therefore, I will most likely enroll in Tulane. I really wanted to visit New Orleans and the Campus, but I just can’t afford the plane ticket. I have emailed the Honors Department about helping me out, so I will see how it goes.

Here’s my stat:

ACT: 34 (superscored)
SAT: ~1800 (took it for poops and giggles)

UW GPA: 3.98
W GPA: 4.41 (only weighs AP classes)

AP: took 13 the entire high school.
Freshmen: AP Human Geo
Sophomore: AP European
Junior: AP: (Micro/Macro Econ, US History, Chemistry, Biology, Calc BC, Lang)
Senior Course: AP (Gov, Lit, Psych, Physics C, Environmental) and Calc III

EC: FBLA, TSA, other stuff
Leadership: FBLA, TSA, other stuff

That’s outstanding, johfresh. I do hope you get to visit. Where are you coming from? Being international, I can only imagine it is fairly expensive. Perhaps Tulane can help you out. I am not sure what their policy is on that. I assume you are trying to come in for the April Top Scholars Weekend, since you said you contacted the Honors Program office.

I’m currently residing in Colorado. I just got an email back from the department but they couldn’t help me I will contact the admission department next because I would really like to visit.

I hope it works out. I guess I was really asking what country you are a citizen of, but if you would rather not share that of course it is up to you.

Southwest has some fairly cheap flights out of Denver if you left on April 5 and returned on April 8, if you act fast. I think the total round-trip was about $365. Just FYI.

Like johfresh, I am also a deferred applicant from Colorado, but I haven’t heard anything back yet. Does anyone know in what order they are evaluating applications?

I am not sure there is a particular “order”, especially at this stage. I imagine that the admissions team is looking at applicants on a case by case basis with an eye on how full the class is looking like it will be based on indications from those already accepted.

I’m a RD applicant. I’ve had my application complete since November, but sent my SATs in late december. Should I be worried that I haven’t heard back yet? I didn’t do the “Why Tulane?” essay, and I’m regretting that.

@screenname6 Well of course it is very late now, but you can always try writing your admissions person and telling them why you regret not writing the essay and what you would have said. Nothing to lose.

@screenname6 I’m in pretty much the same situation. I applied quickly when I realized the application was free and realized later that I really like the school. I know people who submitted after me and have already heard back, so I’m a bit concerned too.

I wrote a revised “Why Tulane?” essay that I emailed to my admissions officer like last Wednesday. The next day the message went from saying “we’ve decided to defer you” to “your application is complete and awaiting review”, so I would send whatever you’ve got to convince them you want to go.

My daughter is a RD candidate and we haven’t heard a word yet. She applied in November. Is there a set date they are releasing the RD decisions or are they releasing on a case by case basis? Getting nervous

@mama1021 They have to post by March 31, so the longest time to see some decision is 12 more days. Of course that decision could be to wait list her, so that would still be a form of limbo. Hate to be negative, but you might as well be prepared for that possibility. It happens a lot, and not just at Tulane.
