Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Zync meltaways @MTmamabear. Mucinex expectorant with cough suppressant. Hope she feels better soon.

I am a far of Bio Defense.

fluids, gargle with salt water, complete vocal rest (Fisherman’s Friends or Cold-eeze can’t hurt)

I’ve heard that you DON’T want to do complete rest - but don’t do a lot of high or loud sounds. Low vibration movement is good for the vocal cords. Lots of steam and Thayers Slippery Elm lozenges.

Here are a few links to discussions by CoachC that might be helpful. She’s an expert.

That moment when you open the Financial Aid package from a school your D already rejected and realized that $-) perhaps one should not be so hasty in declining offers? Wowzers!!! Definitely not until all FA packages have arrived! The offer brought the DC to in-state tution levels. Smh
Meanwhile, her top choice at present has offered her a fraction in FA. Sighhhhh
 #-o

@addicted2MT Maybe you can appeal the offer from her top choice and still use the financial aid offer from the school she declined in that way. That works best if schools are on the same level. But in either case, it’s worth it to try!

I do think there has been a push on CC to encourage student’s to decline offers ASAP in an attempt to get the waitlist to open up. I would not encourage this.

I think that people should really wait until they have carefully reviewed finances and have all their offers on the table before they give up acceptances. Also go to more that one accepted student day if there is any question left. This is an important and expensive decision and should not be rushed.

Understand, too, that just because a school receives a notification of a declined offer in early April, does not mean that they will do anything with their waitlists until much later. To start with, there is a certain yield that they expect. Depending on the program, a certain percentage of students are expected to decline their offers. This is built into the number of acceptances given out and does not mean that they will go to the waitlist at all.

Many schools will only go to waitlists after May 1, so they can see what the total yield is and have time to review what their accepted class looks like.

I would not encourage hasty decisions because they do not change the outcome of those on waitlists.

@addicted2MT - Exactly why I understand folks who choose not to formally decline any schools until all final FA offers are in hand - even when admitted to a “dream” school. Congratulations on being so wanted!!

I agree with you @uskoolfish‌ . My D made her decision but is still waiting on all financial aid offers just in case. I have heard that the schools don’t do much with wait lists until after the May 1st deadline anyway.

Just curious - for any members from years prior - if placed on WL at a school, how do you plan a visit, especially if distance and cost are factors? We are from the West Coast, so getting to places like South Carolina for a weekend waitlist visit aren’t feasible (especially in the next month before semester schools end). Any advice? -Quinoa

If a WL school is not feasible for a visit, but is at top of “dream school” list, definitely give them a call/email to let them know that you are highly interested in that program. You may be able to “politely” ask, “what are my chances? I would love to come for another visit before school lets out, but cannot justify visiting a distant school that is not a truly viable option.” Regardless, make sure they know you are still very interested in their program.

Quinoa, I would state the name of the college here on CC and see if anyone has a current child there now or has had one in the last 5 years. I would scour the internet and the college website. I would make a list of pertinent questions and possibly PM them to the parent who has had experience there. If there is not a thread already on the school on CC I would create one. And best of luck!

Terrific idea @puma69 and quinoa, I have answered such PMs for parents of kids interested in S’s school, and others have done the same for me. Great way to get more perspectives. Even with accepted student visits, you are still getting a “dog and pony show”. It’s nice if prospective student is allowed to sit in on “real” classes, but sometimes this late in the year they are not a true representation of the classroom experience anyway. The upper classmen are often off campus for various reasons, and lower classmen may be prepping for end-of-year juries, recitals, presentations, etc. It’s often nice to see a campus in spring that was buried in snow and ice in January, but don’t feel it’s the end of the world to not get to visit a school.

What @mom4bwayboy‌ stated about end of year classes is exactly what my S experienced yesterday on a visit. He said the freshman were all getting ready for juries so he wasn’t able to fully participate in classes and he didn’t get much time to talk to the faculty. However, he stayed overnight with a student so he was to see what they were going through as they prepared for juries and callbacks for next seasons shows. He found it helpful to know what to expect as they prepared for juries and to see where they were at the end of the year.

As for the declining offers, we decided to not decline until we had all financial information unless we know he will not attend a school under any circumstance. I commented on the pressure to decline because of CC sympathy before, but that is not a realistic or healthy approach when money is a factor. I had my S order his list of acceptances, then his last choice offered the largest talent award (so far). It moved up on all of our lists. We’ve decided it is worth another look even though he has a clear first option.

I can completely relate to the WL/visit conundrum. My D committed to BW without doing a revisit - by the time she came off the waitlist - she was in final tech for her last show - and the May 1 deadline was 2 days after the show closed. We had revisited in early April last year, her top accepted schools - and so it seemed very strange to accept the WL offer without going back to revisit. What we did instead was watch the “Stages” videos on YouTube, and revisit the curriculum, etc. on the website
and took a leap of faith. It turned out to absolutely be the right decision - but it was strange to only ever be on campus for the audition in NOVEMBER - and never again until she was at orientation in AUGUST!

Ditto PMing and asking any and all questions. I’ve also put students interested in D’s school in touch with her several times & she is happy to answer questions. Most current students are probably willing to help out! We had a friend our year who NEVER visited the school she was admitted to. Her first time on campus was when she moved in. It worked out fine and she loves it.

@quinoamom206‌ , my daughter goes to CCU if you want any info or help. Let me know!

@addicted2MT Waaaah! I’m crying for you. I saw that your D has added some new acceptances more recently, too. And all the schools are great options. Maybe one of these other schools will also have a fabulous FA offer!

@quinoamom206‌ My D goes to CCU as well!

The incredible journey is nearly complete! Down to 2 schools. S will release everyone else the next day or so. The finish line is in sight!!
