@soozievt, had you seen that statement before? I had only read about NACAC. This is a different entity. I thought it was remarkable that Michigan put that statement right in the document. There was also something about offers/acceptances prior to March 1 being non-binding that was attributed to the same governing body. (I assume that excludes binding ED) Finally, it was spelled out without ambiguity that accepting the money offer meant you were accepting the admissions offer.
@vogelpitts Iâm sure the offices are swamped and only likely to get more swamped as 5/1 approaches. Putting things in writing is more convenient for your child and the school. The kid only phoned the program directors who had phoned him with the initial offer. It seemed more appropriate.
Yes, thatâs what my daughter did. She called the man who initially called her from the program and told him. However she hasnât heard from any other programs on the phone. Thanks for the input!
Millikin doesnât even wait till May 1st. It says once their MT class is full, itâs full! No matter if it is before May 1st. They require a deposit to hold the spot
That sort of policy would really put me off the school.
@soozievt I agree with you completely! I donât understand why some of the schools want to try to make kids commit before May 1. It just makes it seem even more likely that a student might commit and then the dream offer comes inâŠand well, then the student changes their mind, which sets the school up for the situation that they were seemingly trying to avoid in the first place. I didnât think you were directing anything negative towards me personally. No worries, there! And as I stated before, Iâm just sharing the info that is floating out there so people can be aware and yes, beware! This bit about the schools wanting the kids to commit before May 1 seems to be an issue every year and unfortunately, I think it will probably continue to be an issue every year. Thank you for providing the links and the NACAC info. I hope people will see it and the main point is to talk to the school and talk to the program if you find yourself in this situation!
@vocal1046 re: post #3952âWOW! on those numbers.
I guess I should have read further and compiled everything into one post. @Notmath1 do you mean that Millikin makes x number of offers knowing that y number (which is less than x, obviously) will make a class and once y number accepts, then the other kids that had offers but waited to decide then lose their offer? If so, that doesnât sound like a good policy to me. It sounds like it would be beneficial to future students if they knew going into the process, which schools have these âinterestingâ methods of making offers and filling their classes. Again, just like every school has different specifics regarding audition materialâŠit seems like there is just as much variance on how the offers are made and handled.
I personally, had S email schools for both academic and program declines because that way we have something in writing and a trail that can be traced.
@vocal1046
I had not heard of the American Council on Education before now, no. I just visited their site and could not find this policy agreement, though it sounds exactly like the one at NACAC and so maybe they are pointing to that same agreement? I donât know. Yes, it is great that Michiganâs School of Music put that statement out for applicants to see. Itâs good that they want students and families to know their rights. Perhaps they are aware that some schools donât abide by these rules and so that they are showing that they do. Most schools DO abide by these rules that colleges and supposedly agreed to do.
My son received a letter from Millikin yesterday canceling his admission to the program. When I called they and inquired about the May 1st deadline, they apologized profusely, blamed it on someone else and reinstated him. Interesting.
Appalling.
Any Hartt students we can PM? We are visiting Wednesday and would love to talk to current students of the MT program.
Does anyone have any information about the Boston Conservatory waitlist? How many students are offered acceptance? What is the size of the incoming class? Do they historically go to the waitlist? Since my daughter is on the waitlist, this information would help the stress. (a little)
@Jrdirectortommy Have you joined the Facebook page for MT/AT accepted students? There are many current students willing to answer questions. My D has found them to be a responsive and friendly group, but they may not be present here on CC.
@bwaybaby97, in the past (things change every year so saying that just in case), BoCo was one of those schools that accepted many more people than the number of slots in the program, so I think it is rare for them to go to the WL, not that it canât happen. I would call the admissions office and ask them that question directly. Of course they donât know yet, but maybe say, âIn the past 5 years, approximately how many a year have come off the WL?â Some schools are much more open about this sort of info than others, but it couldnât hurt to ask. Better to get it from the horseâs mouth.
@gingersnap97 excellent idea!
Thank you Calliene. We tried asking the questions that you suggested but were not successful. We will continue to hope for the best. Boco has always been my daughterâs top choice.
Just noticed that the âCollege Majorsâ bar is back, which makes switching between MT and Theater-drama boards so much easier, thanks to whoever did this!
^^Hmm, I saw that after you pointed it out and was delighted to see it fixed but now I donât see it any longer! :((
Oops âŠI spoke too soon, as I see that feature is back again!
