Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

For those facing their 1st college move out - here is a thread from the parent’s forum I thought might be helpful :slight_smile:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1886172-fall-dorm-move-in-vs-spring-move-out.html#latest

Thanks for sharing the link @toowonderful . I am mentally preparing myself for the challenges of Spring move-out. However, another poster shared her idea of using IKEA 20 gallon zippered bags for big items like bedding and pillows, etc… Then I found them on Amazon so I got a few and had them shipped to my D. If she likes them, I will order some more. If anyone else is interested, here is the link on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Ikea-901-491-48-Frakta-Storage-Blue/dp/B00QNRHM8C?ie=UTF8&refRID=AHZQ1E8NV3EA7VPSJT6J&ref_=pd_rhf_eetyp_p_img_1#Ask

@addicted2MT - idk if moderators will let the link stay- but thanks for that… I just sent some to my D too!!

My son is using a storage company bc he is in Tx and we live in Michigan. He will only be home for a week and then he is off to his summer gig until school starts. It is called College Cardboard. U can google it. They drop off boxes, then pick up all of the stuff and store it for the summer and then deliver to new dorm. Not sure which schools they deal with, but it is worth a look if you live not in driving distance or have time issues.

My D is living off-campus next year and the housing market being what it is, they had to take a lease that starts May 1. So while we are paying rent for a summer she won’t be there - she at least has a place to store her stuff! The landlord was kind enough to give them the keys now (not currently occupied) so she and her roomies are taking stuff over there little by little and hopefully won’t have a whole lot to do by the actual move out day! (One can dream anyway) - Honestly, I can’t believe a year has passed!

@tmygirl - since we live in Texas and d goes to Western Michigan, we should have done a joint storage deal. Driving back and forth to Fort Worth and putting stuff in our garage would have been much easier than flying/driving to Kalamazoo (via Chicago) to be a “mule” to help d get two more large duffel bags onto Southwest Airlines (smile).

@addicted2MT … I’ve never seen those before! Thanks! I just had one sent to my D.

S’s school is an hour away. I’m leaving in 15 minutes for fourth trip as “mule”. Fortunately the first three trips offered “cookies” in the form of MT/Acting performances. This one’s all about the “stuff”. And that pile of dorm/apartment “treasures” has rematerialized in my living room - again. Summer storage is sounding better and better.

Summer next week, yay!!!

I’ve used the large plastic storage bins for all 3 of my girls for college storage. They stack and fit under most dorm beds or in the closet during the year or can be used for storage as well. They can be easily stacked in storage units. And for my eldest whose college had a company that picked up your stuff year end and left it in the new dorm room in the fall–they can be taped and labelled like boxes. Heading to Utah on Monday to pack up–her apartment lease starts June 1st so it’s a storage unit for us this summer! WHERE did the year GO???

Last week I moved The D out of the dorm into a house off campus…in the rain…and the cold. Yay me. She’ll stay in Pittsburgh this summer.

My S has yet to come home for the summer, though freshman year, he did come see us for a week in May. They learn about storage and u-haul rentals pretty quickly.

@Patrice13 I will be at Theatre Aspen with your D as one of two arts administration apprentices this summer! I need to take an arts administration internship to graduate, and this is the absolute perfect fit. I’ve been waiting to post about it until I signed my contract, but since I first found out about TA on CC, I knew I had to share! I have a few more finals to get through (and then I need to get my wisdom teeth out :(( ) and then I leave for Colorado in less than three weeks! I’m there all summer, then it’s back to WI and right into junior year rehearsals for Viterbo’s all-female mainstage production of Romeo and Juliet, where I’ll be playing the Nurse! So many adventures to come, and I’m so excited…although I’m REALLY glad to say goodbye to sophomore year. To the parents of the class of 2019: The sophomore slump is REAL.

@CanadianMTgirl My sophomore MT agrees with you re: the sophomore slump! Almost over…

They call it sophomore slaughter at CCPA.

Perhaps that is an advantage of schools that DON’T let you perform freshman year- casting makes the sophomore year exciting!

I’ve never heard of the sophomore slump. What is that exactly?

The idea is that you’re all excited and enthusiastic freshman year, and by sophomore year, the reality of how much work it’s going to be to get to a professional level starts to sink in.

There is a pretty good definition relating to athletes and musicians - the second failing to live up to the first. At least for my S (and a few of his friends who describe the same thing): The novelty has worn off - bloom is off the rose – and some of the work has become repetitive or routine. For the kids who did the rounds of summer stock auditions (and maybe for those who did not), they are realizing they really need to learn how to navigate the business end of a creative career and it can be overwhelming. Performing- which is what keeps these kids rolling - is a smaller part of the “business” than they’d like.

For the first time, I’m hearing things like “what have I signed on for.” It doesn’t seem to last long - a new project cures the blues!

So there’s a name for it … sophomore slump! At CAP21, there are the Projects, but no mainstage until junior year So during freshman year they were scared to death, sophomore year they were bored to death, and they were worked to death both years…but junior year is coming on fast! @artskids , you are right about the overwhelming nature of the business side of a creative career. D is learning to deal with rejection and constructive criticism and is growing a thicker skin. It’s all part of making a living in This Biz.
