Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

@addicted2MT‌ , did you catch “Hair” while at Coastal?

@toowonderful, I know of at least 5 that were accepted from Moonifieds last year and heard before the new year. I have a feeling there were more, but I know for sure of those 5. Of those five, two of them are there now.

Thanks!

We scheduled for on campus at PSU the weekend after Unifieds to get a sense of the campus. We would be interested in hearing others impressions of the audition process there.

S passed all prescreens - BW (audition completed), Pace, PSU, TSU, Otterbein. I am a little concerned about the number of schools that can be comfortably managed at Unifieds…is there a typical number for one day?

For MT it could be tough to schedule more that 2 in a day - typically one in morning and one in afternoon, though it does depend on the school. Check websites etc for guidelines- schools often ask for a block of several hours, some (Ithaca if I recall correctly from last year) will simply schedule you in the “morning” or “afternoon” section, without a specific time.

D is scheduled for 6 for Chicago, although we have room for one more since she is doing Syracuse on Sunday. This seems like a doable number. I am nervous that she has that many eggs in one basket – what if she is sick that week? Time to look for the germbana!

Can anybody explain to me the correlation between being accepted into programs and being accepted into the schools themselves? Does my daughter have to be accepted into the school itself first?

@Christie3 - For many schools it is a simultaneous process. Applicant applies to school and must meet academic standards, AND also go through the application/prescreen/audition process for the theatre/music program. Some MT programs will not go forward with audition process until academic criteria are met. For others it’s all happening at the same time. A few programs accept students into their program w/o applying to school first, but the acceptance can be withdrawn if applicant does not meet academic requirements of the school. Look at the admissions websites for each PROGRAM - often separate from the general admissions website information - for details at each school/program.

Agreed- you have to go school by school. Not uncommon for schools to send out “congratulations” envelopes/emails with academic admissions before you have even had the auditions. Others you have to wait

My D has academic acceptances to three schools where she hasn’t auditioned yet. It is a school by school thing like the others have said.

Still waiting to hear from Ithaca…I noticed some heard right away, some a few weeks…S submitted 10/15…Ugh, the wait…

Has he or have you called?

Trying to schedule properly for NY Unifieds with some unknowns. I know that most schools seem to be asking for 9-12 or 12-whenever. Are CCM and BoCo doing the same? A half-day 1/23 - 1/25?

For Chicago, CCM did a 9-12 slot.

@vocal1046‌ he did receive a msg on Acceptd right after he submitted his ps saying that as soon as he apies to the school he will hear back about his ps, well he applied academically before he submitted the ps, so not sure what that means

Have you called admissions to make sure they received the academic app and linked it to the prescreen? If that doesn’t do it right away, call MT department and ask for assistance. Perhaps the “reversed” order confused someone.

Also, double check Acceptd. Click on the “Messages” tab.

@sydsim‌ - D did Coastal at Moonifieds so, sadly, we were not on campus to see Hairspray. Too bad…

@Theatremom2015 - 2 years ago when D auditioned at PSU,she passed a live in-person prescreen in the Fall. Then we went up on a Thursday night to Penn State in February. (not required but it was a good thing for us to do). On Friday. the program arranged a full day of classes for her to attend with current Mts and that night we saw a show (Shakespeare - straight acting) that featured some MTs. Saturday was the actual audition.

They divided the faculty into 2 groups of 4 or 5 teachers. All participants did the dance call first. Then auditioners went to the group to which they were assigned to do songs and monologues. The auditors would tell the students right after songs and monologues if they wished for them to stay. If they were not asked to stay, they were no longer being considered for the program.

That day I would guess maybe there were 70-80 kids - and they asked 3 to stay. During the day there was also a meeting with the program heads who talked about their philosophy and program structure - and also an opportunity for parents to talk with current kids in the program. The waiting area was downstairs in the same building and they had coffee and things available throughout the day.

The 3 who stayed did some testing (I believe it was music theory). Then they were brought in front of the entire panel of faculty (half of whom they had seen, half whose group they hadn’t been in in the morning) to do their songs and monologues again. This time they were asked to make some corrections and do some additional songs from their book.

They were told a few weeks later whether or not an offer was being made to them. I believe an offer or wait list was extended to 2 out of the 3.

Things were basically the same last year except that once you were invited to stay the only thing that happened from there was an interview with the department head and others. I don’t believe there was any testing. There were less students at the audition and more who were asked to stay so that could be why they didn’t test and/or do songs/monologues a second time.
