I’ve heard students at several different universities refer to non-theatre kids as “muggles”. It’s pretty common among this generation.

I’m so naive…I just thought another poster made it up.

Oh, kids these days. Whaddaya gonna do? I’m stickin’ with the old ways.

Loving all the HP references!!! My D especially agrees with the wand-Olivanders & La Duca’s comparison. Now I wonder if she chose the shoes or if the shoes picked her? :-?

I think it IS a generational thing- and an apt description at the same time. To bring back a conversation we were having earlier in the thread- could you use the sorting hat as an metaphor for the audition process as a whole?

@toowonderful – you read my mind. I have some ideas on which school or schools would be Slytherin and those that would be Gryffindor. Actually, my D has noted that Elon has Gryffindor’s colors and its mascot is a Phoenix. This is a nice distraction from all the waiting!

I agree its generational. Personally I love “muggle” but I don’t get offended easily. Civilian reminds me too much of being “non military”.

Muggle is used by Harry Potter fans (my family included) all the time and makes perfect sense in this context. It is not meant as an insult but as a way to identify “us and them.” I think the use here was spot on and fun!

Some moms even talked about the muggles at their kids’ schools earlier on CC (posts #3 &4)

<a href=“How our theatre kids adjust their first semester - #5 by Jkellynh17 - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums”>How our theatre kids adjust their first semester - #5 by Jkellynh17 - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums;

This is why I love CC! These HP references are so spot on! It’s a whole different world, that’s for sure. Hard to explain to a muggle.

Lol… My D once referred to someone as a half muggle. He was a theatre tech student, but in a fraternity. So… He bridges both worlds!

That would make him a mudblood!

Well, just got our first rejection email…
Florida State (#8 on the list). Hopefully its not a trend. How many schools do most people apply to in this process anyways?

We applied to 14 schools… 8 if which were BFA’s. Got into two BFA’s rejected from 6…If you have a good safety that your child can really love then you may not need that many schools.

14 or 15 including non-audition. He auditioned for 10, cancelled two auditions. Accepted to the two non-audition BFA and accepted to 2 audition BFA (1 MT, 1 Acting) and an audition BM MT.

@pghmusician its never easy, gotta move on though. I think the number of schools depends largely on whether you are male/female. Generally males seem to apply to less schools. My S applied to 10 but withdrew from 4 after he received early acceptances.

D did 14 total schools in a variety of programs: 3 BFA acceptances (out of 7), 5 BA acceptances (out of 6), 1 pure safety acceptance (state school)

Last spring I tabulated the number of auditions per student as posted here on CC in various “Final Decisions” threads:

2012 Data points: 31 - Average No. of Auditions = 8.8
2013 Data points: 19 - Average No. of Auditions = 9.5
2014 Data points: 24 - Average No. of Auditions = 11.2

You can read more about the number of auditions per student in the thread linked below beginning on Page 4/Post #58 - the discussion continued through page 6:

Would love to know % completed to decision vs. applied and withdrew. I think many begin with more than they actually complete. And thank you, once again for helpful stats! The colleges should pay you for this info!

Those of you who were wondering about the Michigan prescreen timeline, I got my “yes” this past Friday (12/12), I submitted 12/01. It was said before that different faculty review their own set of prescreens, maybe that explains the delay for some people?
