Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

2 more to go here. 2/13 and 2/21
Hurry up and wait!!! Anyone going to be @ Western Michigan on Fri?

2 more for S. 2/21 and 3/6

One more to go in two weeks. I agree, I’d rather stay busy planning the next audition and be sitting waiting for results to trickle in… Maybe I’ll convince her to add another just to stay distracted!

The waiting is the hardest part, also the fact that some people get good news WAY before other people.

I was eager to go to work just for the distraction!

To entertain yourself during the wait you can blast through completing your taxes (assuming you’re able fill out forms with your fingers crossed) so that when the acceptances start rolling in you’re able to rapidly get final financial aid offers. Just trying to help… hah!

I only have one more audition and it’s not until March 7th! I wish I could do more but I’ve been having some stomach issues since the beginning of Jan so I’m not really up to it anyway. As for waiting for decisions, I’ve already heard from 3/8 but it’s still painful! Although I have a TON of schoolwork to catch up on, both because of my stomach thing and audition traveling…

D still has 3 auditions to go, but just got her first program acceptance today. She’s happy but not excited, it’s not for the school she’s lost her heart to(We know, you’re not supposed to fall in love with any program, but it just happened), but I’m doing the happy dance. I’ve researched the heck out of this program and know it’s wonderful, and D also had a real connection with the auditor at Unifieds. No matter what, she will be able to study what she most loves in college. I’m start to breath normally for the first time in months. Wishing everyone broken legs in upcoming auditions, and crossing fingers for good news. And D and I have been looking at the fellow students at auditions, and have been saying: those are your future classmates and castmates. Wonderful, fun people, look forward to meeting more of you on the road ahead.

@mtflmomo1 sometimes a school soars if you can get back for a visit as an accepted student! Students are a different kind of welcoming. They look through different eyes as they imagine themselves there.

Congrats @mtflmomofl ! Its so nice to have an acceptance in your pocket. Makes the waiting and possible rejections a little easier to take. She IS going to school and study MT! Yay!

Yay @mtflmomof1!

We have one waitlist so far.

Ugh.

2 more auditions left.

If anyone has auditioned for Western Michigan this year (I don’t think there’s been a recap yet) and would like to give me a little preview, I would not be opposed! (Private message is fine too!)

When is your Western audition, @KaMaMom?

@mtmom2015 … we just moved it to March 6. It was supposed to be this Friday.

That’s our date, too! See you there. @tmygirl’s S is auditioning there this weekend, so maybe she will have some insights for us next week.

I can tell you how it ran last year, if that’s helpful?

They audition TP (Theatre Performance) and MTP (Music Theatre Performance) on the same dates (and some kids audition for both programs.) When you arrive each auditioner is assigned a number to put on. It opens with a meeting in the Shaw Theater, where several department folks give overviews - and I think a financial aid piece. Current students then come up and call groups of numbers to go and do monologues (and in the case of MTP sing). Everyone waits in the Shaw theater for their number to be called, and returns to Shaw to retrieve parents and belongings afterwards. Current students are also milling about during this time to answer questions.

If I remember correctly - auditioners audition in front of the next person in line (I guess helps them turnover between auditions more quickly) So be prepared that you will have to watch the audition of the person ahead of you. OK - I’m remembering more - they have MTP’s sing first - and while they are doing their mono - the next auditioner meets with the accompanist to discuss tempo etc… so also be prepared to have that going on while you do your mono. For MTP - shortly (almost immediately as I understand it) after your audition, you will be notified if you are called back for the dance call. If you are not called back - then you know when you leave that WMU is a no. If you are called back - you have some time to go and grab lunch, change clothes, and report back. I think it was 4:30-5:00pm before the audition day was completely over. For TP only - or not called back to dance - you are done by lunch.

My D didn’t do TP - but several of the kids we sat with did both - if I remember correctly - they did their TP audition in front of that panel first - and then went and sang and did mono for the MTP panel and found out about dance. They didn’t come back to Shaw in between - if I remember that right.

@kategrizz … THANK YOU! I appreciate it so much! My D especially has found it very helpful to read what the audition will be like.

Wanted to add something in here that we did not think about prior to making final decision.

It may be worth inquiring whether or not the school supports students being cast in local theatres during the school year. S was recently cast in a show near Otterbein. He had to get approval and worked to rearrange his tech duties for the spring musical but overall the faculty was very supportive of him working (he was not cast in the spring shows at Otterbein). During this time I asked other parents about their ā€œkidsā€ school’s policy. It appears not all schools are supportive in fact some prohibit students form working, especially during freshman year. So just throwing it out there because it was something we did not considered and fortunately it worked in his favor.

CCPA supports outside work to an extent…mostly with upperclassmen and women, as far as I can tell. You still have to do your tech and be at all your classes and if you are cast, make all your rehearsals, but it’s definitely possible. (A lot of the seniors work outside the conservatory.)

While an applicant is performing his monologue, the accompanist and next auditioner are having a conversation in the same room? Not relevant for my kid but I’m curious about this arrangement.

Yes. It’s usually very quiet but often how it works. The ā€œon deckā€ person is giving the accompanist tempos or showing the music cuts.
