Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

My S has also been performing since 6. I’ve seen great changes for sure. Unfortunately they were so overdue, it feels we may never catch up to where it should be for minorities or females.

Random change of topic. I was poking around on the parent’s forum looking for information on another major- and was reading about med school “coaches” who have a $1000 fee to START, in the end, the service would cost approx $7000!!! Wow!!

Point Park’s class composite should be floating around soon. I know the kids all had to submit their headshots to one of Zeva’s assistants, and they are supposedly all in. Looks to be a class of around 26, and a pretty even split from what I could tell.

I think more and more majors have coaches these days!

Point Park’s class isn’t final yet but is very close. Right now we have a class of 27. Among them we have have four African American people including myself, 2 Asian Americans and 2 Latinos. At the moment there are 14 girls and 13 boys.

Nice! Thanks for the info @MTheatreKid

As a word of encouragement to all that are doing the male/female math split never mind assessing ethnic diversity. I any given year, the heart will want what the heart wants. So even a school famous for wanting and developing triple threats may for whatever reason take a kid who can’t dance nor act but sings like and angel. And any other uneven mix in between. I see that has happened for real this year in at least one example I can speak to with direct experience. A couple of years ago I know of another well loved program that had more leading ladies than they knew what to do with and they really just wanted dancers who would be fine in the chorus. The list goes on.

I’m sure it isn’t the first time nor the last. It has nothing to do with what may or may not happen in subsequent years so just don’t over think it. The heart will want what the heart wants when it decides it wants it. Over-thinking it will just leave you with sleepless nights or paying a coach way too much to solve something that is unsolvable.

Agree with@halflokum except possibly for the part about these programs having hearts.

@jkellynh17, that made me laugh out loud and I haven’t even had my first cup of coffee yet this morning!

@Mel2421 the kids you see on the class pictures are not the only ones that were accepted. CCM actually accepted ethnic kids, but they all got accepted to so many other schools too. As for the male/female ratio, the CCM class of 2019 has 8 girls and 9 boys.

@KTVoice my S has a female friend that was accepted off the Penn State wait list this year. She is one of the four girls attending.

I was wondering if any of the kids that were accepted to CMU were offered any merit scholarships. Or is CMU more like NYU, where they don’t negotiate, and expect you to pay the sticker price.

It seems to me that a school like CMU would give incentives to some of the kids they really want in their program.

@audrone NYU Tisch does not give merit aid without need, but they will offer a preferential package (meet more need) to students they really want–either because of talent, academics, etc.

NYU Steinhardt still gives out merit aid (no need) to some students they really want. (BM in VP with MT concentration.)

@audrone - I assisted a young man this year with his apps/auditions and he was accepted into CMU as a first round offer. He is deferring a year because they gave him no aid whatsoever. CMU expected them to borrow against their home, which is not going to happen. We are hoping he can get some money together during this next year, but just not sure if he can make it happen. Not super pleased with CMU about this, honestly.

@audrone - CMU sends their WL kids a “real” financial aid detailing - it arrives shortly after the WL notification and is designed so that one is able to have a look at it prior to deciding whether to officially place yourself on the WL - ie determine if you can afford to go.

There was no merit $$ for my D - and I’m figuring that was the case for everyone on the WL. In our case, there was a financial aid offer, totally in keeping with other such offers received, ie based solely on income, etc. as reported on the FAFSA and CSS Profile - and in fact - because I dug up the paperwork, very similar to the offer my very academically high-achieving son received from them as a first round accepted student two years ago. Again, no merit $ thrown at him – and he was a sought after student by many schools - but he was a “sciences” applicant. He received better offers elsewhere and CMU wasn’t in his top few choices anyway, and he went elsewhere.

@stagedoormama - that is really tough - feel sorry for him - and it surprises me a little - thought that the drama dept might have been able to pull a few strings to get some honey in the pot for their most favored acceptees.

@audrone Found this on CMU’s website.

It is hard to determine what they would consider middle income, but I do know students who were awarded this and they had no need. They attend CMU for studio art.

@stagedoormama It is possible that the parents of the student you are describing has a combination of current income or past savings that is much higher than you think.

@uskoolfish- unfortunately, no- wish that was the case! Really hoping he/they can figure out something so that he can attend, but not really sure how that is going to happen at this point.

I don’t know if any of you follow the drama/theater page, but a girl who was on waitlist for cmu directing last year applied agin this year. She was wait listed again and actually took herself off of it. They contacted her and turns out she was a top choice for them and they gave her a huge scholarship. She said it was much larger than what she was offered last year. Her username is HannahMTheatre, I think. Look at the wait list class of 2020 thread on the drama page.

She went to depaul this year. Maybe that gives a little hope for $$ next year?

I don’t understand if they give carnegie scholarships to middle Income kids, why are they actually not offering that! Do they provide aid up until EFC? How frustrating and disappointing, I hope that same boy has lots of other offers with good money attached. Maybe he can start elsewhere.

Yes, I saw about HannahMTheatre- super happy for her! And yes, praying for $$ next year for him. He is quite talented and CMU is a dream school. He only applied to a handful of schools (stubborn!) and was offered spots at BU and CMU. (BU is also not known for great aid apparently). He is a transfer from a CC. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not, considering he has to start as a frosh anyway… So Fingers crossed!!

@stagedoormama Has he applied for non school scholarships? There are a lot for kids who transfers from CC to a 4 year university.
