Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

Here is a thread from awhile ago with numbers.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1733121-mt-admit-rates-number-of-applicants-2015-class-size-2014-or-2013-number-of-offers-if-known-p1.html
Lots of programs appear to go for a split, others nudge towards women or men, maybe it depends on how many accept an offer of admission? Who knows.

Those numbers continue to blow my mind regardless of how often I already knew this to be the case… So I don’t understand… How many offers did they probably make like say at penn state to yield 4 girls do you think? What if all the offers they made actually accepted? Do they only make like 8 offers banking on half declining?

Maybe next year will be a boon for girls applying to CCM?

So do you think that means that CCM and Penn did not go to a waitlist ?

I guess I would have thought that either program could have the exact number of male and females that they want because they are picking from such a huge pool. I would have imagined that for each place they could go three or four deep…

I guess that is wrong.

CCM went to a waitlist. And a boy was taken from the waitlist.

@lovetoact so do you think their intention was only to ever take 5 women?

Clearly they wanted 15 boys if they went to the waitlist. I’m just curious…

@KTVoice I’m sorry, I have no idea! A boy I know was taken from the waitlist–that’s all I know

Ithaca’s MT class has 10 boys and 7 girls

CCM took a girl off the waitlist too.

This is insane, I hope my D gets in somewhere next year. I had no idea the numbers were so low. She was 1 of 12 taken for Wagner’s Summer Musical Theatre Intensive but I am still scared for her next year.

@Mel2421, Don’t let these numbers unsettle you. First, a low intake of girls this year may mean a higher intake next year. Also, reread some of the final decision stories–there are many girls who had multiple offers from great schools. This is just a blip on your journey. Good luck next year!

@Mel2421 it’s good that you’re here this year. Knowledge is power–since you know how the odds are, you’ll help your daughter tailor her list for maximum acceptances.

@Mel2421 based on small sample size of schools listed here, it appears to be fairly even. CCM is one school. I see some have more girls and some have more boys. Sadly, there are more roles for boys, BUT that does not mean there is no place for your girl.

@artskids If incoming students have all accounted for each other, BW is 7 boys and 10 girls.

All, keep in mind that our personal life colors our own perspective. Distribution of minorities is far more important to me than gender distribution. You all saw gender inequality. I saw diversity inequality first, then gender. Now, imagine being Latino and female looking at these pictures and wanting to pursue a BFA?!?!? For others they may see height or weight. My point? There are many more people who have even less of a chance than your daughter. Try to include them in the conversation about theater inequality also because you never know who may hear/read the conversation and be able to make a difference.

Thanks @claire74 and @lovetoact it is scary to here such low numbers. We are from Texas and Texas State would be ideal but it looks like she will have to audition everywhere she can. Wow! We visited Wagner and Pace already. This summer we will visit Ithaca, Rider and Montclair.

FYI, Elon MT19 was 7 girls / 11 boys (they have since added 1 girl). Elon MT20 has reversed numbers of 12 girls / 7 boys. I’m not sure if it was a deliberate attempt to balance numbers.

Thank you, @IfYouOnlyKnew, for eloquently making the point to include others in the conversation about theater inequality.

Hehe! My daughter also happens to be Hispanic. I was hoping that was a good thing, but now I am not sure. She has the training for sure. Dancing since 3, Master level acting classes, 8 plus years of Theatre. Nominated as a Freshman for a Betty Buckley award in Choreography. Still I am very scared for her. I just want to her to get in somewhere where she will be happy.

@IfYouOnlyKnew Someone on Facebook pointed out that the CCM group is lacking in “melanin,” and I hadn’t noticed it before I saw that comment. To me, it’s a wake up call whenever I notice my own lack of awareness about diversity. And yet, I was afraid to bring it up here because the topic seems to be such a flashpoint. I am glad that you brought it up and did so in such a constructive way. I have a close friend who experienced bullying and harassment in the workplace that appeared to be at least partially racially motivated, and that experience really changed my overall perspective and awareness of the continuing pervasiveness of discrimination throughout our society.

@GSOMTMom @Mel2421 @choirsandstages I truly believe our conversation has power to change theater inequality. If nothing else, our awareness make our children aware, they graduate and start working and creating with knowledge of equality gap. I choose to believe our children will be change agents. Will my S ever get to work in this business? IDK, BUT if he does get a chance— I feel he has a responsibility to leave it better than he found it.

I am seeing a lot more diversity in Broadway shows and stars. That makes my daughter’s journey better I believe. This is a kid who since the age of 6 has never wavered on her desire to perform on Broadway. She has the training and the talent I am sure. Now we go to auditions and see where she will go to College.
