Names of these schools- Cornell, CMU, UCLA, UC Davis, UCSD, UC Irvine, Purdue, Boston U, UIUC

Of schools I've heard back from- All :)

Names of these schools (A/W/D)- Denied at Cornell and UCLA, accepted at all others

My top school- CMU, Cornell, UCLA

Gender- F
State or int.- Int.
Major (for all schools)- Computer Engineering
GPA- n/a, but good grades
SAT Score NEW- 1490 (760 M, 730 EBRW)
SAT Subject Tests: 800 Chemistry, 800 Math 2, 760 Physics

Other- Since most of my application was average at best, I think certain other factors did help a lot: essays, LORs etc.

Essays are one thing I really put thought into. Most of my essays weren’t about something major that had happened to me or something amazing I’d achieved, but about small anecdotes that seems insignificant but helped me realize something significant (if that makes sense). I described incidents that were nearly life changing even if the incident itself wasn’t particularly huge.

I didn’t have many ECs, but I was very dedicated to one particular activity (with a leadership position and several awards). I also had exceptionally good LORs.

Good luck to all applying next year!

Of schools I've heard back from- 6

Stanford, UCSB, UCSD, Pomona, Duke, USC
Names of these schools (A/W/D)-
Stanford (D) Pomona (D) Duke (D) UCSB (A with regents) UCSD (A) USC (A)
My top school-
UCSB/Stanford

Gender-M (white)
State or int.-California
Major (for all schools)-Mathematics/history
GPA- 4.0 weighted, 4.92 unweighted
ACT Score- 35
SAT Score NEW-didn’t take
SAT Score OLD-didn’t send
800 math level 2, 760 US history

Other- Valedictorian of class of 550
Extremely strong ECs with many years of involvement, leadership positions, and success. 350+ hours comm service. Excellent letters of rec. 6 AP classes both junior and senior year.

I never felt a spark of inspiration for the essays so I got lazy and wrote what I think were lackluster responses. I think that’s why I got denied from those top schools. It was naive to think the other excellent aspects of my resumé would push me over the top even with mediocre essays. Regardless, I wouldn’t have been able to afford those schools anyway, so it’s probably for the best someone else got in instead of me. Plus, UCSB is still an amazing school and there’s plenty of perks to being a regents scholar there.

Of schools I applied to - 11

Names of these schools - Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, MIT, Northwestern University, Oxford University, University College London, St. Andrews, University of Loughborough, Bath University

Names of these schools (A/W/D) - Princeton ®, Harvard ®, Stanford ®, University of Chicago (A), MIT ®, Oxford University (A), Northwestern University (W) University College London (A), St. Andrews (A), University of Loughborough (A), Bath University (A)

My top school - I would have been happy to attend any of the first 6 universities on the list (Harvard not so much though), yet Fitzgerald did an amazing job persuading immature high-school students to over-romanticize Princeton. Now, I guess I’m having a hard choice between UChicago and Oxford.

Gender - Male
State or int. - International student, Russian citizen yet attend a high school in UK
Major (for all schools) - Nuclear engineering for MIT, something economics/management related for the rest of them, yet I am strongly considering double majoring.
GPA - Since I study in UK, there is no GPA, but I received As in 4/4 As-levels, as well as A* in Maths A-level, and I am predicted 4 further A*'s in the rest of my A-levels.
ACT Score - 34
SAT Score NEW - 1520 (1550 if super-scored)
SAT 2 Score (Mathematics Level 2) 800
SAT 2 Score (Physics) 790

Extra curriculars- Debate Co captain and captain, Academic Games, Orchestra, National honor society, internship, summer music programs, bunch of community service in my city,

What set me apart- I’m from a failing urban public school district and I’m black. I talked about problems in the world and solutions as well as discussed the discrimination my family has face.

My advice to future applicants is that it is perfectly ok to reach high, but apply to safety schools (preferably EA so you can get an acceptance by December) and create a balanced list. Utilize your strengths, accept your weaknesses and know that you will end up at the school that is best for you.

Hi! I’m also from Russia, could u tell me which school are u from and what kind of extra curricular stuff did u do?? I’m hoping to get into Oxford to do physics! Rare to see other Russian people in Oxford plus doing engineering:)

My top school - I flip-flopped between all of these! I was accepted to honors programs at all, including the Ernie Pyle Scholars Program at IU which is very elite. However, UMBC offered me a full-ride, so I will be attending UMBC in the fall.

Gender - Female
Area - Northeast
Major (for all schools) - Media and Comm Studies Major, Minor in Journalism and Political Science
GPA - 3.98 weighted
SAT Score NEW - 1320

ECs- I am editor-in-chief of my newspaper, have been in the program all four years and editor for 3. I’ve restarted our literary magazine, and I founded a journalism honours society at our school. I’m VP of our Science National Honours Society. I’ve travelled a lot, and I’ve interned at the Nat’l Aquarium for two yrs. I had excellent recommendations.

Advice? Do what feels right. Visit every college in your junior yr if you can. If you can’t, take virtual tours. Get excited! You only get to do this once (or twice, for grad school). REACH OUT TO PEOPLE! Reach out to people in charge of your major, and go to every event you can. Good luck:)

Other- Made the mistake of talking too technically in the fields of engineering and bioinformatics on my common app essay. Pretty sure the humanities-grad admission officers at the liberal arts colleges didn’t appreciate it much or couldn’t understand it.

Extracurriculars: Intern top tech company, Published papers in peer-reviewed journal, created award winning startup, founded an NGO, sponsored by government to give speeches, created device that was showcased at E3, found something that led to cure of a specific cancer, collaborated with CERN for particle physics, built satellites and drones in my free time, lots of other stuff.

Advice: If you want to go to a school, just apply to it. Who knows maybe you’ll get in. Plus, if your GPA was shit like mine, try doing stuff outside of school to make up for it.
