Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

@LAM2017 I hear good things about Hofstra in general. My good friend’s son is a Junior there I believe majoring in TV Production…(or something like that) He was originally thinking of pursuing acting but changed his mind. He is extremely happy there. The only thing is that the surrounding area is not good…but that’s the case with a lot of universities.

The other thing we’ve learned in this process is that my daughter may not want to go so far away from home as she originally thought! We still have an audition at Western Carolina in a couple of weeks, and are “theoretically” supposed to audition at Montclair in April, although I’m not sure that’s going to happen. University of the Arts is also still out there with an audition date of April 8, I think. Sigh…

Hang in there, @Monkeiiboy ! :(|)

@LBSMOM Your posts resonate with me because we seem like we’ve had the same approach and many of the same schools. My D also applied to just nine schools with some BA theatre programs. She also got an artistic pass from Rider that kind of surprised us, and I think we’re waiting on many of the same schools - Wagner, American, JMU, and BW (though I’m not counting on that) - and rethinking the whole thing. Like your D, mine is accepted into two schools that she could attend and may like very much. Both are regional BA programs in theatre that do musicals. But she hasn’t received a MT acceptance yet, and it’s so hard to wait!

This is completely nerve-racking! I’m at the point that when someone posts “portals have been updated!!”. I race online only to remember that D didn’t even apply to that school. Last night D and I went over some highs and lows of the audition season. Rejections can be painfully random. We are trying to stay positive and it’s not always easy. At this point we have five more possible rejections (acceptances), some more likely than others. For those still waiting for the first yes, know that it is coming! For some @bisouu explained, it just might not be in the form you expected. Also keep in mind that in past years kids have gotten fabulous acceptances right up til the end and a college career is what the student makes of it. The hard work is done and I hope all the kids look back at this with a sense of accomplishment for all their hard work.

Ok, so I’m a stalker on these boards. My 3 Ds were heavily involved in MT as long as I can remember and most of their friends from our area are now in MT BFA programs (Penn State, Mich, Ithaca, BW, CCM, BoCo, etc). Every year I watch in March all of you wonderful parents and students go through this waiting game, ups, downs, etc. and I sometimes get knots in MY stomach for you. But I always have this sense it will work out. (Of course, if it were me in the situation, I would be FREAKING OUT. So much easier to watch from afar).

So here’s a different kind of story to show there are many paths… my girls did not audition for any BFA programs. Rather, 2 are juniors in trad’l academic majors at USC. They both, however, have been heavily involved in the theatre program at USC through the School of Dramatic Arts. They have been cast in many USC musicals starting their freshman year even though they are not even theatre majors, and one isn’t even going to finish the minor. They each have taken many classes in SDA though. This past fall, they were cast as the leads in a USC musical. They got noticed; they were signed by an agent. Idk, maybe that happens all the time to these kids. I honestly don’t know how often that happens, but it has opened up some new doors for my nerdy, but completely in love with MT, girls. A lot of their SDA professors have been encouraging them to give this profession a go.

My girls will finish their degrees and then both are taking gap years to give auditioning a try in LA and NYC (one will also be applying to med school while trying to audition so not sure how that will work out). Do they have the training they will need to compete since they were not BAs or BFAs? I have no idea. But I do know that while this door is open, they are going to give it a go. Did I ever think they would take a gap year after graduating, absolutely not. There are so many paths for our kids to pursue. There is not one answer for all.

I hope maybe my story gives you some peace to know there are many ways to go about this journey. Forgive me for “stalking,” but I love hearing your stories and am rooting for you all!!

I was where you all are! 6 years ago, my D applied to 14 MT programs. Big fish in a big pond, lol, coached by MTCA and Broadway friends of mine. In final pool for several great programs…14 rejections. It ripped my heart out. She kept going. Picked an academic acceptance and reauditioned the next year and got into 2 of the 6. She has now graduated, but booked acting work every summer, and right out of school as well. So even iif the unthinkable happens, it is not the end. They can make their way if they have the drive and the heart, and a ton of pure luck! Stay strong, this is just an unpleasant blip on their journey!!

@mtmom2014 I Love Love Love your story!! Thank you for sharing. This journey is certainly humbling for our kids – and for us.

Your daughter’s experience confirms what I’ve always believed: A positive attitude, determination and hard-work will take you wherever you want to go regardless of what college you attend or the letters on your degree.

Does anyone have information or insight into LIU-Posts dance training for Musical theatre students? We are wondering how advanced dancers fair in the program. Unfortunately, we are not able to do a campus visit.

Has anyone heard anything from Utah? I did a walk-in at NY unifieds and my application, transcript, everything was sent and done two weeks later. Still nothing…

@mtmom2014 and @3tallblonds Thank you both for your posts. They were very reassuring during this awful time of uncertainty. My D still waiting on the “one” yes. Started with 14 schools, down to 5. (we have one safety secured) But not sure what to do if there is no MT yes. Maybe a gap year? Keep praying I guess. >:D< and keep waiting… :-w

Hi @Macsdreams I can’t post a link here, but there is a youtube video interview of a couple of dance majors at LIU… The name of the video is Dance Mentors at LIU Post. When my daughter auditioned on campus for MT we also met some dance majors. There was no dance call for the MT program so we asked specifically about dance training. The students all loved the program and felt it was rigorous and thorough.

No mail.

A school like Drew, non audition but the deadline to apply has passed (feb 15) Are those hard and fast deadlines or would it be possible to get into a BA program in April?

Hey, everyone, this is my first time posting in this thread, but I have been avidly reading since the fall. I was recently accepted into CCM for Stage Management (super pumped!!!), and I just got my log in for my financial aid status page only to find them listed no aid packages what so ever. Does anyone know if CCM scholarships or other UC scholarships are still available. I vaguely remember them saying that info about scholarships would be sent out later?? Does anyone know anything about it??

@owensfolks Our fingers are tightly crossed up here in PA for your daughter. Best wishes!!!

@KaMaMom thank you so much for the information…

@JerseyParents You can still apply to Drew. They will consider your application if there is space available, which honestly I can’t imagine them not having room. We got amazing financial aid as well. Allowed her to come out of college debt free. Tuition was less than our in state school tuition.

I want to encourage all us pins-and-needles folks to go and look at a blog post on Chelsea Calder’s blog - she teaches voice in NY, is an MTCA coach, and a UMich graduate. The blog post is titled, “Stop Looking Sideways, or How I Embraced My Own Path.” Pretty apropos for us all!

Thank you KarenK99 for posting URL on Chelsea Calder’s blog. What a great read!
