OCU - accepted with merit and academic award
Webster - accepted with academic award, no merit for incoming freshmen
Missouri State - letter stated “you are a finalist, let you know soon”
Texas Tech - accepted, waiting on merit award if any, academic award
Sam Houston - wait listed, academic award
CAP21/Molloy - audition in Manhattan last Saturday, doesn’t look like Molloy offers academic awards
Questions: Does CAP21/Molloy offer merit/talent scholarships? Has anyone heard about Missouri State selection status?
We are so close to making the call for OCU, but not sure how much longer to wait.
@earnold great acceptances!! Our Malloy cap/21 offer included some academic $ - but that program is very different. Kids live on long Island and commute in to the city for BFA classes. I am not judging but make sure you know it is a bit different. That was not appealing to my D. OCU is a big admit!!
@CATenorMom Applied academically in September, followed closely by the Requested materials to hope for the audition. Accepted academically in October. Did Chicago Unifieds.
@earnold Congratulations!! Sounds like lots of great options for y’all! We are still waiting to hear from Texas Tech. When did you get your acceptance and how was it sent?
@MomofMTBoy - my son is a high school junior and we will be in the thick of it next year. All of you have inspired me with your tireless championing of your talented kiddos! I’m gathering my tenacity now as we come closer to the beginning the process. Did most of you begin submitting apps right when they opened in August? I’m thinking that is likely our plan. And I know that I read somewhere about writing essays over the summer - at the risk of being ignorant, were these done on general topics or do the colleges assign a list of topics before apps are open? Sending EACH one of you strength and patience as you navigate the heartaches, successes and redirections!
@beachymom the Common App prompts are available now so he can definitely get that essay done early but not every school is on the common app. And even for the schools that are, sometimes they want an additional personal statement and all of them will require a supplement for the theater dept with its own essays and/or personal statements. Seriously my D was writing and writing for weeks on end. Many schools also have a prescreen so he will need to video his monologues. I was on that Common App in August but really didn’t get that many of them in super early. As long as you’re done by November you’re fine. I think the latest one we did was UNCSA which she got in on the deadline, I think Dec 6th.
@beachymom - I think the sooner you can submit applications the better. One thing to cross off a long list of things you will need to do. Once you submit them, keep a record of any login information they provide you. Often they will give you some sort of login access to their particular system which may be where they update your admission status months down the road. So make sure to write down all of your logins and passwords for each application so you can refer back to them in the spring when you want to check those statuses!
Regarding essays, our D worked with her college planner on some general essays the summer before her senior year. These were questions that, from his experience, tend to be found on applications year after year. Once the actual applications and essay questions for her year came out, she was able to take these initial essays she had worked on with her advisor and tailor them to answer many, but not all, of the questions on her actual applications. It did help give her an initial start on the essays to have something she had written she felt good about and felt she could adapt for a lot of situations. But you will still need to read each essay question required and make sure whatever essay you submit answers this year’s questions.
@beachymom I hired a college counselor for the common app process. She started meeting with my daughter January of junior year to make sure she understood the process, walked her through EC’s, helped her research colleges, made sure she knew how to write a college resume etc etc…she had her own strategy, I gave her a deadline of all schools common app completed by mid Oct, and then as those got submitted, my D would follow up at home on her own, submitting artistically to each school as that opened up, by school. Hope that makes sense? Not all schools open up at the same time for applying. But, she did start writing essays in June. That’s a good thing to start early.
@beachymom The common app topics will help with a general guide for an essay topic. My D used that essay as a basis for other topics that came up. We started applications immediately in August/September as soon as they were available so that she could book audition dates asap. Thanks for the good wishes. Good luck to you. This is not a process for the weak at heart – students and parents included.
@beachymom I agree with marg928. Essay and prescreens were done over the summer. The minute applications opened up, she applied. She was able to get her prescreens reviewed quickly and scheduled 5 auditions in the fall and was lucky enough to get her process over by December when she received an offer she couldn’t refuse. If she wouldn’t have passed the prescreens, she would have had lots of time to tweak her strategy. My advice would be to schedule the auditions for your “top” schools early - which flies against logic. You’d think you want to wait and practice…meanwhile, they are seeing and offering spots to kids who may be your “type” and you risk cold/flu season as well as bad weather. My daughter has committed to the school where she had her first audition. I’d also recommend starting a spreadsheet to keep track. I bought a huge hanging file folder tub that sat on our kitchen floor to keep track of everything. When our oldest went through the college application process for academically selective schools, I thought it was insane. Looking back, it was nothing compared to applying for a BFA in MT. But, without that experience and knowledge, our family wouldn’t have been anywhere ready for this journey
@beachymom I wish my son had started the video submission process in the summer, since I was able to help him with the Common App process. Of course, academic acceptance is important, but when it comes to the Fine Arts, the performance aspect is much more important to getting “in” for auditions. Getting past the prescreens, I think, is tougher than academic acceptance, if your kid’s grades and SATs are decent.
D just received a no from Elon. This one smarts-we were both hoping for a lucky St. Patrick’s Day. She is a finalist for their Honors Fellows; so it may be an option if she doesn’t go the BFA MT route. @FourFoxes I SO hate it that our D’s aren’t gonna be together-but I’m so excited for your lovely and talented gal!!!
@beachymom I echo what everyone is saying here. The only thing I think we may have done differently is do a few auditions before Christmas. It would have been nice to get the rejections earlier and then perhaps had time to add some schools on the tail end as backups. My D had all her applications in by Sept 15th - she was also only applying to 7 colleges for MT and we were doing on campus auditions for all of them. By getting her apps in early, we had the ability to choose what dates we wanted to audition and were able to clump together her auditions - 2 per weekend in New England, 2 per weekend in OH, etc. It is a crazy, stressful time but being organized early on in the game makes it a bit less stressful on everyone!
@owensfolks I’m so sorry. It makes me sad the whole lot of them can’t be together for 4 years. All such great and talented kids. Our fingers are crossed so tightly for each one of them that they find their new home soon. What a wonderful experience they had together - and they were truly bonded by the experience. They will all stay in touch and, I KNOW, they will be on stages together again. #AdvancedWeatherForever.
BUT, CONGRATULATIONS on the Finals for the Honors Fellows! That’s amazing! Maybe her path will take her there anyway! BEST WISHES TO HER!!!
For those that are looking for more options, UArts still has one more audition date on April 8th (app due two weeks prior). Their Fall '17 musical will be Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’.
