Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

@MTMommma congrats to your D! I’m kicking myself now for take ASU off the list. We did a drive by a year ago when we went to Sedona for Spring break and really liked the area…however I was led to believe that it was a non-audition program (I couldn’t find any audition info on the website) and that if you were going anywhere in Arizona, AU was the much better choice academically and program-wise. Our list was massive so that one came off early on (as did AU). My D is not getting any large academic scholarships…it would have been great to know that ASU gave talent money. I’m happy she has some good options but in the beginning she really wanted the big school with big football and she didn’t get into any of those schools except for Alabama which is non-audition. And then there’s Minnesota where she’s on the waitlist. USC is a pipe dream so not counting on that one! She also didn’t end up finishing her applications to Michigan or Elon and I’m mad at myself for letting her make that choice…I get she was overwhelmed at the time…Michigan’s supplement was so annoying! And Elon…also big mistake letting her preconceived notions based on a few kids she knows who go there influence her decision to not apply after passing the pre-screen. (It’s too Vineyard Vines for me!) It also had to do with timing as well as they don’t go to Unifieds but if she had shown real interest we could’ve made it work. Ugh I’m just venting now! 23 schools and it really wasn’t enough!

I just realized I’m on the MT board so maybe what I said about ASU holds true for straight acting ^^^

No from Northwestern. And then there were 6…

Still a newbie to MT. How does a kid on the west coast get involved in a “summer intensive” program. I see some folks talk about them from past experience. Is it worth it and where are some of these programs? Thanks.

@bdedad definitely don’t give up. We were told they get released on Fridays and that all yes, no and WL will come out that way. Heard it takes a few weeks. My son had a friend find out last week and he heard yesterday. I’m sure they have many more to go.

Very frustrated around here. No mail, email, phone calls, yesses, no’s, waitlists. Just nothing! Oh, except admissions emails asking for deposits and offers for Viagra!

@aquarose26 - lots of eastern schools have summer programs (CCM, Michigan,CMU, NYU, Ithaca, Northwestern, Syracuse, Boston, all come to mind, and there are others) idk about west coast schools. They vary in length, intensity, competitivenes and cost. There are also programs like TPAP and Artsbridge that are not associated with one particular school. As for how to get involved- you apply. Some are a straightforward application, other require submitting a video, getting transcripts and recommendations etc.

Are you looking for this year or next? I think many of the deadlines for this year’s programs have past.

@aquarose26 there are so many summer intensives out there - most associated with MT programs at major universities. You can look up the college MT webpage and then click on a link (sometimes it says “Programs” or “Youth Programs” or “Summer Programs”). They are expensive and just because your child does one at a specific university there is no guarantee that they will be accepted to the MT program down the road. With that said sometimes it helps if your child blows them away and what it does do is give your child the chance to work with really high caliber people, improve their skills, build a supportive peer group (my D. has incredible friendships that have seen her through this whole process since we live in a rural area and she is not surrounded by anyone else doing this crazy thing!) and also get a sense of who else is out there and their level of talent. These are all really good things.
By the way there are lots of other programs out there that not affiliated with major MT universities. If you google MT summer programs I am sure they will come up. In our case my daughter worked with a broadway couple at the Musical Theater Lab in Martha’s Vineyard (I highly highly recommend this program and you can read my post about it on another board) and also after junior year attended NYU Steinhardt’s MT Summer program. You can message me if you are interested in either - but I am sure you can find many great programs in California.

My D received an e-mail from Syracuse yesterday! Wonderful.

My daughter (Asian Indian) with ACT: 35 (M:36; S:36; E:35:R:34; Writing:32); unweighted GPA: 3.98/4.00 (weighted: 4.60); 11 AP Classes including high end courses even in her Senior year Multi Variable calculus (only 1 B+ in all her life from Grade 6 onwards). AP Scholar with Distinction; All 5’ & 4’s in the AP Exams so far she has taken; NHS Executive board; Lot of volunteer hours; Indian classical dancer with graduation scheduled in July; Indian Classical music singer; various accolades was DENIED by Northwestern yesterday for the class of 2021. She is in the top 1% of 720+ graduating seniors in one of very good and known schools in the Chicago suburbs. My heart broke when I saw the denial from Northwestern. She was refused interview for their HPME program which I knew it’s lot tougher to get interview being an Indian origin. That was not upsetting but to get denied for regular admission with the above record is mind boggling and something wrong with the decision process. I am sure quite a few people in my daughter’s position.

@WGSK88 I’m sorry that is tough. FYI this is a Musical Theater forum so although NU is a non-audition program I’m sure it’s a different admit than someone looking for a STEM major, etc. Anyone on here who was accepted has declared Theater as their major.

My D also got the Northwestern “no” @MomofMTBoy. Next!

@marg928 - sorry didn’t realize that I tried to delete the post it’s not letting me!

@WGSK88 it’s very annoying you can’t delete posts on CC! You have 15 minutes to edit so if you catch a mistake in that amount of time you can just erase it and put “deleted” there…that’s the only option.

I, too, feel absolutely beaten up by this whole process. Seriously, if we could figure out how to apply this process to our penitentiary system maybe there would be less repeat offenders(I’m joking…sort of). Please forgive me in advance if I step on some toes, but the very fact that I am now posting is evidence of how completely done I am with this whole process. First of all, there are some incredibly supportive people on here and I am thankful for the encouragement along the way. Reality is, the “nos” have pilled up and we are at the end of the road. My kid isn’t any less talented and hard working, but somehow just not the right “fit” for any of the programs that were carefully considered to be the right “fit”. So we will wait for these last few to come in, they will be rejections of course because somehow in this very diverse world we live in only a few seem to be the right “fit” for all the programs.

@bluestickynote Carnegie Mellon told me by the end of the month everyone should hear

@aquarose26 If you are in CA, there is a CA state summer intensive for theatre. I don’t remember the name of it. Anyone else? Or search for it. It is considerable cheaper than the college programs already listed.

@aquarose26 @bwaygirl1 It’s called CSSSA - California State Summer School for the Arts. But the deadline has already passed. UCLA has a program called “Acting and Performance Summer Institute” and they still accepting applications.

More rejections and more heartbreak. My kiddo is really down and I don’t know what to say to her anymore to cheer her up. Anyone on this forum apply to UC Irvine? She has great academic stats and I was so hopeful that at least that would come through for her. It would be a good safety. However her portal is unchanged and from previous years that usually means a waitlist or rejection. So sorry for venting and so happy for all of you who are hearing good news and hoping some light will come our way as well!!!

@beachymom your S and my S sound very similar!! He’s done way better than we had hoped given the dancing thing
