Yes! My daughter was at Marymount yesterday and told me the same thing! It was definitely different - from the monologues to the fact that everyone auditioned in front of their group. With that said we know of people who love the program and others who have come out of it and done really well in the business -
So at marymount manhattan auditions the auditors never even have you perform your monologues individually? That whole process sounds interesting!
Also, I am auditioning for MMC at a regional audition next weekend, and I was wondering if there’s anyone else who has auditioned regionally who can speak about that process for BA theatre/musical theatre? The one thing that I’m worried about is the songs…
I’ve heard that we should prepare one song but they might ask for two… The song that I have prepared is very legit and head- voicey because that’s mostly where my voice lives, and I don’t know what I should do if they ask for a belt song… I don’t belt but I have a few songs that are lower are more mix-y… If they ask for a belt piece should I try with a chest voice-y song that isn’t belty, or just straight up say I can’t belt and only sing the one song? Any insight would be appreciated!
@singoutlouise I didn’t mean to imply anything negative about the program – or even the audition. Just that the monologue audition portion left my D feeling confused. I’m sure they do what they do for a reason.
She would love to be accepted Marymount.
My D was in MT audition group 1. Which group was your D in?
@daughtersdreams I’m not sure what group my D was in…it was in the afternoon. I agree with you! Definitely different from all her other auditions. In retrospect, she said maybe they ran it that way to make it feel like an actual class where you would perform for each other. I’m not sure! She was telling me about it at lunch and actually mentioned that someone auditioned in a very similar way to what @jessieburnett was asking about. The person really only had a legit song. They asked her to sing another in contemporary belting style. I would just be prepared for everything. The advice we received (and have had to use in lots of auditions) is to have lots of different songs and styles in your book and have multiple additional monologues. They mostly want to see how you can think on your feet and how you can take direction. So being flexible and ready is always good! Best of luck on your audition.
@jessieburnett may daughter did the LA regional Marymount audition and was accepted into the BA theatre, MT minor program. She had a very high legit Gershwin song and an upbeat contemporary song that she mixed (she doesn’t do much belting). The accompanist was telling the kids that mixing is the way to have a healthy voice for your whole career. So don’t think that you have to belt. They said that acting the song will tell them all they need to know about your acting.
I posted a part 2 to the “you don’t need a BFA” story that I posted here a few days ago. I put it in the Drama forum though. I do think that having a BFA in MT is essential but for acting for film/TV I’m really beginning to wonder…If you’d like to read it here’s the link:

Is anyone going to Wright State on Friday?
@momtojoss - Several of us have current MT students there. Let us know if you have questions! And according to my D, it’s going to be a large group this weekend.
Just wanted to let you know that when my D auditioned for MMC in 2010 in San Francisco they ran the auditions exactly like what was described above. She was accepted to MMC for the BA Theatre/Musical Theatre minor and ended up going there.
Just looked at my calendar and was amazed to see D has just three auditions left! I feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I simply can’t believe that in a few short weeks it’s going to all be over but the waiting. My D is an old pro at auditioning at this point- what a difference a few months makes! Excited to finish and more excited to see where everyone ends up.
@momtojoss My D is doing the Master Class/Audition at Wright State this weekend. I was told there are 110 students auditioning!
Same - 2 more weekends, 3 more auditions. After reading the boards I feel a bit behind the game! My D is only applying to 7 MT programs. She was very adamant about only applying to schools she really wanted to go to - which obviously puts some pressure on her, especially knowing the “odds” game. She already got rejected by Rider, so that leaves only 6! There are a lot of good, local programs around us, but her theory is “go big or go to plan B” - meaning there were only 7 programs she was interested in! Whatever the future holds, I know she will land right where she belongs. Break legs to all auditioning the next few weeks…parents, we are almost done
@momtojoss, @mardeen, yes, my D is also doing the Master Class/Audition at WSU. 110? That’s a lot - even at 10-12 kids/hour on Saturday!
I’m so happy. My last audition is Indiana this weekend and then I’m DONE (except for my Minnesota/Guthrie acting callback in march). I’m so ready to just know at this point. The waiting is KILLING ME
@KarenK99 when we were @ Wright State the kids were put in order by how far away they were traveling to get home, so the farther away you are the more at the beginning of auditions you’ll be. At least if they do it the same way. My daughter’s group actually did their dance call first.
@mardeen,@KarenK99 I knew there was over 100. Do you happen to know what time check in is? And according to the paper I got the dance audition is on Friday?
BAL to all auditioning at WSU this weekend. Past attendees have often said it was one of their more “fun” audition experiences (my S included). Hope that holds true for all of you.
For anyone looking to check out a student-run performance while they’re at WSU, see related post on the WSU school thread (in the school list at the top of the MT forum page).
I don’t see anything specifically about check-in - the Friday master class starts at 10. And yes, the dance audition is the 1:30 - 3:00 pm class on Friday.
I’ll post here instead of replying in private to the person who PM’d me - I thought you meant Saturday! On Friday, you drop your kids at the Creative Arts Center. You will not need a parking pass prior to dropping them off - my D said parents don’t go in. You will need one if you’re going to park anywhere on campus on Friday, but on the weekends you do not need a pass. And yes, they try to schedule by how far away you are in case you have a flight or a long drive.
If anyone has WSU-specific questions, you can post on the WSU school thread & those of us with students there will help you out!
@daughtersdreams Hello…my D auditioned for MMC on campus over Unified weekend in NYC…very unusual audition but at the same time, it felt more like a workshop so my D felt less nervous and more focused. It was nice for them to get a tour with students. I really liked Prof. Connell. He seemed really down to earth and honest. I was impressed with his lecture on understanding the importance of letter degrees (BA vs. BFA). My daughter really liked it there. Just would have to be prepared for a unique college experience…not a traditional campus type.
