Can anyone give me some insight as to the Ball State auditions? Do they stress dance? D is not scheduled to audition until 5 in the afternoon!
D got a rejection to her favorite college and it’s awful. It’s a great school, though probably not considered top tier, but it was such a perfect fit for her style. She doesn’t have a coach, just my inexpert advice, and now I’m rethinking everything with only four auditions to go - none of which she’s really excited about. She is in a safety school, but what to do now.
@MReader hang in there. My daughter was rejected from every school she applied and waitlisted at one. She ended up choosing a safety that she knew very little about. She is currently a junior and having the time of her life. She can’t imagine being anywhere else.
The worst feeling - so sorry @MReader! But four auditions is a lot! Has she visited the schools she still has left? The school D is about to graduate from was in the middle of her list. She wasn’t really excited about it “on paper,” but when we went to her audition, she fell in love with it! And the school that had been at the top of her list fell OFF when we went for her audition - she hated it.
There are also several threads with schools with late auditions if she wants to add more schools.
@MReader I am so sorry. My daughter had a big letdown early in her process and it soured her feelings about several other auditions and schools -whether things went well or not. However, as posted by others elsewhere, things did click into place before auditions were over (thankfully) and she found another program that interested her a lot more than expected.
It is awful to see your child feel so down. Truly. The good news really is that she has other auditions coming up and one or more may end up surprising her in terms of being a good fit. And if not, she may realize her safety or a local school is the right place for her. I know it is her whole world right now. However watching kids with all sorts of results over the past few years and several who changed paths along the way, made me realize they do find their place.
There are also kids who take a gap year and audition again, maybe hire a coach or get outside training. Often these kids have very good results the second time around from what I have seen.
Just know she has options. Good luck and hang in there, Mom.
@MReader That is so tough on you and your D! I am so sorry. Hopefully the next four auditions will be amazing for her and she will find a school she likes even better. We all just want our kids to be happy, very hard to see them disappointed. Good thoughts are headed your way!
Fortunately she likes her safety school, and they accepted her very quickly after her audition, which makes her feels wanted. The down side is that it is a theatre program, not MT, and a large school instead of the smaller programs she’s preferred. And of course, she’s still waiting to hear from other schools and has those other auditions.
It’s just a shock because it’s a school that seemed like a good fit and she felt like they liked her audition. She didn’t have any pretense that she’d get in everywhere, but yeah, we both thought she’d get in there and I’m wondering what didn’t work. Sigh.
Thanks for the comforting and kind words. It helps!
@MReader - I could post the same thing today. D rejected from her favorite school (thanks for the Valentine in her email today, school-who-shall-not-be-named). D shed some tears and is shaking it off. Bracing myself for the inevitable rejections which are a mathematical certainty. We too expect the rejections but kind of felt that this school was the right fit. Unrequited love! On Valentine’s Day no less!!
Sorry @MTMHopeful Same words as above posts for you and all the kids/parents enduring this currently. Wishes all find their “spot.”
I’m sorry @mreader. I’m dreading that. I do think that most of them end up liking their choice in the end. At least I hope so.
I’ll add to that. My S received a rejection today as well…perhaps they are all from the same program. It is so hard to predict how these decisions will turn out, even when our kids feel like they had a great audition. Chin up everyone, brighter days are ahead!
Sorry for your D too, @bfahopeful
@MReader @MTMHopeful @nodaybut2daymom So sorry to hear that
So sorry for all who got those letters today! We all dread those letters! Thoughts, prayers, and good vibes sent out to all!
Thanks @LAM2017 -my D is a first year in a program she loves. Her letdown was well over a year ago. I’m hear to repeat what others have posted- it gets better.
A Valentine’s Day rejection is particularly uncool. Like: “Today’s a day of love… except for you, whom we do not love for our program. Hugs and Kisses!!!”
Very uncool! I agree.
I echo what @bfahopeful said. My D was rejected from her first choice school the day her high school musical opened. She was playing Mary in Mary Poppins. Five hours after she got her letter, she had to be on stage. It was brutal. But now she’s in a BFA program she loves so much that she rejected the idea of reauditioning, which was was initially considering. This is the worst part. You’ll get through it. There’s light at the end of the tunnel, I swear.
@MReader @MTMHopeful @nodaybut2daymom …my D auditioned at LA Unifieds this past weekend and 3 hours after her audition at one of the colleges they sent her an official “thanks but no thanks, you’re no longer being considered for a BFA at our school, but good luck with the rest of the audition season”. That dinged on her phone one hour before her CMU audition. So so poorly timed! She was crushed too.
@missnypizza I really liked Prof. Connell too – ditto to all you mentioned. He is very enthusiastic about his program and it’s clear he cares about the success of his students. You could see that when the student panel was on stage with him. I don’t think all the auditions were done the way my D’s group was. I wonder if there just wasn’t time to have them all do monologues individually and so they used this exercise approach to move things along.
Marymount has quite a lot of liberal arts programs and I like the fact that students are encouraged to do a minor outside of theatre. Many programs don’t allow that.
