Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

New to this group and first post. Wondering if anyone has any info on LIPA? Not finding too much and our child was just accepted. Relating to all the posts here—first viable offer after so many auditions, applications, travel, stress. rejection, or half-acceptance (into school but waiting on program), etc etc—you all know the drill. Thank you so much.

What is LIPA?

Liverpool Institute Performing Arts. It’s a new-ish program, I believe, founded with money from Sir Paul McCartney?

I don’t know anything very useful about it, just that there’s a Beatle involved.

Double header of bad news this week…D just got her “BA Theater” email from Ball State…this is a big disappointment- no BFA MT admittance. She got an early academic in and a big academic scholarship. Oh boy…we still have 7 colleges to hear back but this one hurt…should she put this in her back pocket since the email says she may be able to audition again for MT as a member of the department if she comes in as BA Theatre Studies major?

@missnypizza a BA in theater from Ball State is a great redirect congratulations.

@Ducky312 Thanks! I know it’s an option but tell that to my D…not a happy camper 8-|

@missnypizza We received that very same email! Not sure she’ll be super disappointed in it as we’ve heard some tough things about the program, especially toward girls.

@KPike320 I’m curious as to your comment above, regarding hearing tough things about Ball. Good or bad? Please clarify.

For instance, this year CMU will audition 3,000 for 12 MT spots and 12 Acting. That’s .008 percent acceptance. 8 percent is looking really good.

I was going to say CMU was the true lotto school… those numbers are insane! Sorry to hear about BSU – I can tell you my D was waitlisted for their BFA and ultimately chose another school but when we visited we met several theatre BA majors that had been accepted into the BFA program in later years; the only problem being she may have to stay an extra year. The Ball state money was so attractive, I know how that hurts, but consider it a back up? Not a bad admit at all! We also met several theater majors who performed in the productions…last year we saw Hairspray, and the Tracey was a Theatre major transfer!

@missnypizza @KPike320 I have a D who is a sophomore MTO at Ball State and I have never heard of anything negative about toughness on girls. To the contrary, my D loves the supportive and caring nature of the program. Every November they have auditions for the MTO program for current students and I have heard of several instances of kids who have moved into the program that way. In fact, this last fall they did a production of Parade and the male lead was originally not even a part of the theatre and dance dept. He was encouraged to reapply and was accepted. He was amazing in his part! I’m happy to answer any questions anyone has about BSU…just message me!

Regarding CMU, 24/3000 is 0.8% not 0.008%. They probably accept slightly more than that to yield 24 so the acceptance rate is probably on the order of 1.0% – still crazy low, but not 0.008%, LOL.

@MTRaleighmom I’m sure it’s a fantastic experience for many! :slight_smile:

Well all I have to say to that CMU statistic info is the same I have said since day one…A) if they indeed are auditioning 3000 kids that’s nuts & B) I think they need to prescreen …
I don’t care how nurturing the audition is… lol
I think there is something not quite right about that whole thing for some reason …imho
carry on …

Lol. I kind of agree with with @theaterwork. Same goes for juilliard and the thousands they audition.

@theaterwork I can’t see how they physically can audition 3000 kids. My D auditioned in NY and there were two sessions but hers wasn’t incredibly crowded. Maybe 40 kids tops for BFA Acting. They only had one NY date as well for that program. I think they had two NY dates for MT…still it doesn’t seem to add up.

Wow, since D didn’t pursue CMU or Juliard, I didn’t realize they weren’t prescreen schools. Wow. I remarked this season that I thought it would behoove Wright State and Belmont to move to prescreens next year!

Well I know it’s a crazy number and I’m sure they are nice people but I just don’t like that if you are in THAT much demand that they aren’t prescreening people. I mean you know darn well there are a slew of kids who are just auditioning there for the sake of doing it and I get that, but CMU knows darn well there are a lot of kids that aren’t anywhere near their standards showing up. It just bugs me…but I know everyone’s not being forced to audition and it’s your choice to do it …
I feel like they need to control it more. Like Michigan .

Ok, couple of questions cause I’m still very new to this (someone ask me how to build a house and I’ll have all the answers, this theatre thing is frightning)

What is BW and CMU (in my world CMU stands for concrete masonry unit  )

My D auditioned at L.A. Unifieds 2/10-2/12. I’m guessing it may be too soon to be getting a letter from them just yet. She attends a public high school where the theatre program doesn’t do a whole lot of musicals. Her resume is thin on performances because they let all the kids have a chance at lead roles. I see so many of you on here that attend performing arts schools and have extensive experience in plays. However, she has won several talent competitions. I’m wondering how important and full resume is?
