Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

D has her final audition at Wagner yesterday. LOVED the experience. So glad that for us all the traveling is finished. Now the waiting begins!

I totally relate @mom4bwayboy! We are moving and I can’t believe how many costumes and props we have! I can’t get rid of anything, it’s all so unique and they really end up using stuff again! No regrets! We have had such good (sometimes stressful) times with our kids!

@mom4bwayboy not to mention the numerous trips to purchase stage makeup for our S. Very funny to ponder at the checkout the appropriate shade of eyeliner for your S :))

@brightstaral Can you share your thoughts on Montevallo? D was just offered a place there with good money.

Dance mom here who never gets rid of anything! At one point all three of my girls were competing and for a few years I had 25 costumes in a single season! They cost thousands so I can’t just give them to Goodwill like many of my friends do…I’ll save them for my grandchildren I guess! I just have to figure out a better way to store them…right now there is storage bin on top of storage bin.

My had been receiving “we really liked you” emails from LIU for a couple of weeks, and got the redirect to BA acting yesterday. She’s super bummed. This is on the heels of her UofA rejection - she received it on Friday but I hid the envelope from her until we came back from an audition on Saturday. Now we wait… It’s all out of her hands now…

@marg928, I finally did give away all of our dance costumes. We gave them to little girls and used them for Halloween costumes, etc. It was hard to just give them away after all the money we spent on them. But my Mom had saved all of mine and they looked awful after so many years so it really wasn’t worth it.

@LBSMOM We were at Wagner yesterday too - in the morning - and my D also loved their auditions! I certainly can’t predict the result, but regardless it was one of the best experiences of this whole audition circuit. She liked how they had a group and cycled through the vocal, acting, and dance sessions and performed in front of each other. And OMG all those theatre students turning out to help or just cheer the high schoolers on - they were so friendly and enthusiastic!

@artskids - I had no idea what kind of stage makeup to purchase for a 15-y-o male ballet dancer. Male teacher said “MAC”. I scheduled a consulting appointment at our mall store. Then bought more makeup and application implements than I have spent on makeup in my entire life. At least he now knows what foundation best matches his skin tone. . .

@marg98 - some time ago, I came across an e-bay type site that specializes in reselling dance costumes. Just a thought. I sold a few of ours at a kids’ resale shop for halloween costumes. Pennies on the dollar, but figured it was better than pulling out moth-eaten costumes for my grandkids (whom at this point look like will never come into existence).

IDK if this is an acting rather than MT thing, but my D always needs stuff for scene study etc - and I have ended up sending a multitude of costumes to her at school for in class pieces (not only do I have her stuff, but I have costumed for other places as well, and have access to a full warehouse of goods.) In fact - her group wanted to knock a guest artist’s socks off, so I sent 5 people a full Shakespearean wardrobe for a presentation they had

@MReader YES! Agreed! She loved auditioning with a large group - she loved how everyone was very supportive. She loved the campus when we visited back in the fall, the audition process sealed the deal. Now we wait! There were a few auditions that she really enjoyed, and then others that just fell flat - meaning no feed back, very little interaction or direction. Its tough when the kids work so hard, it would be nice if some of the auditioning colleges made the kids feel a little bit more welcomed into the audition room! I know I am very HAPPY the process is over. However, I enjoyed every minute I got to spend with D traveling hours and hours in the car and hanging out together. D never got rattled, never felt overwhelmed and feels like she came as prepared to the process as she could be. She has no control over any of the outcomes and feels she will end up where she is suppose to! On another note, we caught 2 shows in the city over the weekend - if anyone has the chance, run, don’t walk to get tickets to Dear Evan Hansen. It is an emotional roller coaster from the beginning song to the final song. If Ben Platt doesn’t win a Tony for his performance I will be shocked!!

@toowonderful - same here. Recently had to send up two “pirate” shirts for Shakespeare class; multiple light sabers for a video project; spongy “safer swords” for some kind of combat scene; top hat, brooch and “homecoming king” sash for a student-run production (along with the convertible queen size futon bed/sofa - very utilitarian. Last year, it was the hall tree from our entry way and “highball” glasses).

Those of you with basements full of costume parts and props - don’t despair. You are not crazy hoarders. It will become useful again - maybe. Though, owning an off-site warehouse would make DH much happier.

A kid (I call him a kid, he’s in his mid-twenties) from our hometown is one of the producers of Dear Evan Hanson. He won a Tony for Gentleman’s Guide a few years ago when he was like 21. He splits his time between NYC and our town, where he co-owns a restaurant down the street from my house and is renovating an adorable old shoreline theater. He’s a product of our high school’s musical department and always is there to give back to the program. I think Evan Hanson and Great Comet are going to be the two top contenders this year at the Tony’s. Comet is as unique as Hamilton in its own way, and Josh Groban is the real deal. We all know the guy has the voice of an angel, but damn, he can act, too.

@mom4bwayboy - the warehouse storage isn’t mine, 3 theater organizations use it - I just keep stuff there  But my “best” stuff tends to stay at my house, so there are PLENTY of bins and rolling racks in my basement

@CTDramaMom my D saw both of those shows in Jan and she can’t stop talking about them. She cried through Evan Hanson and said when Lucas Steele hit that high note (a C sharp, I believe) in Comet, the whole theatre erupted! I hope I get a chance to see both of those shows. And, IMO, some of the biggest success stories are the people like the man from your hometown. They give back to their hometowns and high schools, are genuinely enthusiastic about performing and live theatre, they inspire kids to follow their dreams and they keep the arts alive! I hope he wins another Tony!!

I think that Come From Away is going to give them some very strong competition.

I agree with @toowonderful. Don’t get rid of those costumes yet! Your s or d may/will likely need them at some point over their four years in college.

I agree about the kind & enthusiastic current Wagner students! So very engaging and as we walked around the campus students approached us & asked us if we had any questions, could they help us find anything etc…

Does anyone know when Temple will send admissions decisions for MT?

If you need a place to donate old costumes, instruments or any other arts related items, check out heARTS, Inc. It is a nonprofit that provides arts supplies and opportunities to kids who lack access otherwise. www.hearts4arts.org It is a 501C3 so you can get a tax write off. They sometimes can help you donate in your local community or they sometimes send items as far away as Africa - wherever there is a need.

My kids have definitely gotten milage out of them for Halloween, school Variety shows, etc. My D made an awesome Catwoman costume a few years ago out of an old tap costume. For the most part they are pretty skimpy though…especially my older D’s solo costumes LOL. And now that my youngest is 13 the majority are too small for any of them. @mom4bwayboy I have often thought about selling on Ebay or there’s even a website for Pageant girls to buy used gowns and costumes for their talent portion of the competition…I just haven’t gotten around to doing it. Maybe some day before all the elastic is ruined!
