Supportive parents are the best!
@CentralOHmomof4 I’m sorry for your D’s back-to-back disappoints. But a BA acting is still a “yes”.
My D has been doing musical theatre since she was 5 years old and nearly always got the female leads. After all these auditions and hearing other’s singing in warm ups and through audition doors – it’s put her talents in perspective. She a very good singer, but an even better actor.
Thankfully we had an audition coach who recognized this and encouraged her to apply to both Acting and MT tracks. So don’t view that BA Acting redirect as a failure – it’s still a path to performance. And as I told my D - her voice may not be as developed as some others yet so just keep working on it and audition for as much MT as you can. There’s a place for everyone in theater!
Could not agree more @alwaysamom. It’s GREAT!
Any word from Shenandoah for anyone? I read that some letters had gone out but we haven’t heard anything yet. The waiting is agonizing and it won’t end for another month!
@Aiming4Success My son received his Temple MT about 2 weeks ago from NY unifieds. A friend of his just got a yes on Thursday ( assume they are staggering their notifications. Best of luck!!
Is anyone still waiting for Ball State? Is that good or bad?
@Aiming4Success We are waiting too. When did your S/D audition? My D was a walk in at Chicago and applied that night.
Montclair audition at L.A. Unified was GREAT! Representatives were helpful and full of useful information. Don’t know anything about the dance sheets though. Dance call was fast paced and no tap shoes were required. (No dance floor) My D loved everything about it. We had doubts about Montclair at first but then they mentioned the in state tuition. The application for audition was a bit much I thought, no one else asked for a head shot ahead of time. I talked to the financial aid office and they informed me that financial aid notices would be going out March 1.
Hey guys I’m a little late for the Montclair convo and I responded over in the Acting section

but I would urge you all not to judge a program by your audition experience, and if you get in (in addition to being VERY lucky) you should definitely check it out further and spend more time there meeting faculty and students and going to classes, etc. Also I don’t know anything about the check boxes at the dance call but I WILL tell you that Montclair tries very hard to have a diverse group of all different types - short, tall, fat, thin, different ethnicities and different “looks.” There are some very tiny girls and some very heavy ones. Not all who are accepted are dancers. They make an effort to balance the number of males and females and not to have too many of one “type.” It’s a great program and I understand how while you are going through the audition process you are stressed out and may yearn for a warm and fuzzy audition experience, not feeling it is not a measure of how good the program is or how nurturing the faculty are once you are there. Just FYI.
@CentralOHmomof4 Same thing happened to me today for LIU :\ I get it’s still an acceptance to the program, but I wish they wouldn’t get your hopes up with emails like that, or at least if they did they would say they’re considering you for a different program…
@daughtersdreams a year ago I didn’t understand why my D didn’t want to apply to any MT programs, only acting. She is a great dancer and she has a beautiful voice…but I get it now after hearing those same voices you’re talking about! She’s just not a belter and I think she made the right decision to go straight acting.
@Calliene Hi! I’m the one who posted the “audition experience” from my daughters recent audition at Montclair on the “Audition Experience” thread. My intent was just to share a step by step report of “what happens at the audition” at this school. I didn’t mean to cause anyone to doubt the level of interest and care that the faculty have for their students. Each school has their own style of doing auditions (and even that varies from date to date). For my daughter, it’s helpful to know ahead of time what a particular schools “approach” is. So I shared it for the benefit of others.
I’m confident that all the auditors at Montclair give fair and equal consideration to each applicant.
Hopefully everyone read the part about how wonderful, helpful and happy the current students were that day. To me that shows that they have a tremendous connection with their professors. In fact, one girl shared her story of how last spring, Clay coached her through auditions for summer equity work and then helped her choose the best contract from those she was offered.
My D’s take on it is that Montclair was very much like a NYC professional audition and students need to be OK with that type of audition room experience if they intend to go into this business.
She loves everything about the program & campus and is really hoping that Montclair will be her “home” next year for either Acting or MT.
@daughtersdreams and the dorms are the best I’ve seen anywhere!
@marg928 True - at least the dorm we saw. The double room was quite large (of course they showed up the newest dorm!). But my D was excited that two other dorms have cafeterias connected to them so you can go straight to breakfast in your PJs! At least I know she’s got her priorities straight! LOL!
Has anyone heard from Montclair? D auditioned in Chicago and we haven’t heard anything. It has been radio silence at our house for about a week! I guess things will start happening soon!
@CentralOHmomof4 and @lalalovesmusic3 - By what method did you hear? Email or postal mail?
@LAM2017 My S heard from Montclair via email last week and he auditioned January 28. I’d say you are still in the running
@sabersunshine my D texted me the news so not sure - I can tell you it was not a letter so it must have been online or email.
Honestly I sorta wish that ALL notifications of decisions came snail mail. It would take a lot
of the load off of constantly checking your email / portals on your phone. It’s like the kids can’t get away from it. At least they’d have to wait till they got home from school to see the mail. And you can’t control the mail to the degree of “oh we’re sending out emails on such and such date at 4 pm!” lol I mean you wouldn’t have that crazy specific info so yes you’d be stalking the mail but at least you’re not having that constant all day checking
@Wickersham2365 I auditioned during NY unifieds
