I completely feel your pain and sympathize with everything you are saying. My D passed 12 of 13 prescreens including all the big ones and so our list of 22 schools seemed more than enough to ensure acceptances to programs that she felt were right for her. So far only one acceptance at a non-prescreen school (that she doesn’t love) and one waitlist at a school she does love but its for the Acting program not MT. I feel fortunate for the one sure thing we have but my daughter is so down she cried for 45 minutes last night asking questions like “What did I do wrong?” My voice must not be good enough right?" Its hardbreaking and so hard for my H and I to deal with. I feel like everything I say is wrong and not helpful. The only thing that gives her a glimmer of hope is that I have reminded her that there is no one path to a goal. If you keep the goal in sight you can get there no matter what.
We have one more audition on March 23rd and 5 more schools (one she only applied to academically but turns out they do have an MT major) to hear from so I’m trying to keep the faith that something will work out for her.
Spring Break for seniors is suppose to be the time of their life but I fear that ours might not be anything more than a pity party. I’m sending you big hugs and warm thoughts for only good things from here on out.
@dramamama2022 FYI - From my understanding, on average, CMU has two main stage shows ( one musical and one drama), students can audition for both but only perform in one per year. This usually happens junior or senior year.
@JayCee17 I’m so sorry that it’s been such a rough journey. If it helps to know, my daughter took an Acting acceptance at the school she loved instead of MT and she’s very happy. Going in she had thought of herself as a singer more than actor, but is looking at her choice as a chance to increase her acting skill set. And now in college she’s still taking a dance class and is in the chorus and can take voice lessons. She had started her school wondering about trying to move to MT, but it turns out that she likes the Acting track better. So don’t despair on that one.
As for her voice not being good, that is clearly not the case if she passed so many prescreens. Maybe she didn’t fit what they needed. Maybe she doesn’t present as well in audition. Maybe the material didn’t work. Honestly, maybe it’s just bad luck. You can be unhappy, but don’t let her define her worth by this crazy process. And hugs to you both.
We are getting slammed by another winter storm and there will be no mail delivery my daughter is beside herself. I have told her that PP, Roosevelt and Muhlenberg (the ones she she waiting for) will all email. Can anyone confirm this so that I can show her I have some idea of what I am talking about?
I am by no means an expert on CMU- my son however has a friend who is a senior MT. He told us last year during auditions that you cannot audition for main stage until Jr year- as a junior you can only get ensemble. Senior year you can have a lead.
Not sure about their crossover. At Pace last year though I did ask this exact question and they said there is no crossover.
My son is a freshman MT currently at Syracuse and their entire dept has crossover so MT can audition for straight plays and acting for MT shows. Freshman year though is nonperformance.
@emdcollege all of the last 3 colleges D is waiting to hear from are east coast, so we have the opposite problem–several of their websites say that administrative offices will be closed today, so I am assuming that some emails might be delayed as well.
@emdcollege PP and Roosevelt notify by email and later a letter. Muhlenberg was only by letter last year. I hope that helps! Thinking of you as you wait
For what it is worth, it is true that you can not audition for, or be cast in, a main stage show at CMU until junior year, Also, CMU has quite a bit of crossover between MT and Acting. I believe MTs take the same classes as acting majors, at least for a while.
OMG my heart stopped because we got an email from PP admissions just now…it started with "We are delighted to hear of your interest in PP Conservatory Programs…onlt to be an invite to see the school that i think I received 3 times already ----PP WHY ARE YOU TORTURING ME!!!
On Muhlenberg, we received an email last week saying that decisions would be posted in the applicant status portal “later this month” and to please check that everything was submitted. I’m pretty sure decisions were out around the 15th last year, but their website has a vague end of March statement.
This process is making me NUTS- now I’m freaking because we didn’t get one from PACE–like does it MEAN something!!! Maybe they’re testing emails to see if they get any bounce backs before they drop the news. I need a drink.
Please don’t worry about Pace @Trish0118! My Pace email was about an accepted students reception in my area. NOTE: this really doesn’t apply to my D bc she’s still waiting for an artistic acceptance.
