Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

@Trish0118 and @fancytheatrekid - I am sooo happy to hear this great news. Congratulations!!

@Oaktree99 and @MusTheaFam Same for my D at BOCO and have same questions.

We gave up the spot at BoCo last year on May.1 and finally released her other schools when she got into Michigan. Hate to say this but you could be waiting another month. There is big movement right after May.1 when kids have to finally commit and make a decision. Of course if you switch schools for a spot that opens up - you lose your deposit. (oh! the fun just keeps happening…). The only school that sent us the financial aid package in advance was CMU - all other programs to my knowledge require you to have your spot. I do not believe need for financial aid is a factor in the MT world - it’s the audition. Best of luck everyone! Hang in there!!

We are done awaiting decisions with the BoCo’s decline. Not a surprise for S, now he’s energized to make a decision. Congrats to everyone with a clear path and good vibes to all those who have challenges still.
S is waitlisted for his heart’s choice, possible that we may be a late commitment as well.

@NewEngMTMom - I am sorry about the results. If you call the school (or maybe it’s on the website), you can ask if they are “need blind” or “need aware.” Need blind means that they don’t consider need in making the academic/talent decision. Need aware essentially means that they stop selecting need-candidates when their aid money runs out. It makes the process more competitive for those students. Need aware can also be a real dilemma for someone who doesn’t qualify for much aid because they will find the admissions process harder for not much upside. I wouldn’t assume a school is need-blind because to do that requires a large endowment.

So sorry @NewEngMTMom I am crossing fingers for LIU. I have heard they are getting more popular and noticed too! I wish my son applied there! BAL!!!

@NewEngMTMom I’m so sorry about everything, but a little story from my personal journey. I was a 20 year old Freshman and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I had the opposite experience: I began as a theatre major in a well known conservatory. After two years I realized that theatre was absolutely NOT what I wanted to do but discovered during that time that my love of theatre and writing would be a great combination for a career in journalism/broadcasting. I enrolled at age 20 at a four-year institution as a freshman in Journalism. Many of my arts credits transferred so I was able to graduate in three years. It was absolutely fine being older; no one noticed or cared and I found many other friends who were in the same situation. I believe everything happens for a reason. Hang in there.

It’s a no for us from BOCO also… just relieved to finally have all of our cards on the table. It’s decision time!

A “no” from BoCo and a lack of response from Millikin, so we’ve officially moved into the decision phase…and I’m sooooo relieved and grateful for that! And more importantly, my D is happy and getting excited to visit/re-visit her options Lol. Whew…

@NewEngMTMom I believe that Missouri State has a transfer option that still allows you to graduate in 3 years? Crossing everything that LIU works out for your girl!

@NewEngMTMom my daughter’s friend is going to LIU in the fall and she will be a 22 year old freshman. Have you called LIU? When did your daughter audition?

@NewEngMTMom I’m so sorry I know Belmont in TN Is still accepting video submissions because we planned on doing that.
I think this process is so crazy - so easy for a talented kid to get no offers …we got NO from MSM and BOCO last night …
have you thought about the gap ‘growth’ year? I know it can seem scary …my D was going to do it and she would have been 20 as a freshman. she really wanted this and I’ve heard of so many succcess stories on here and other places about it.
@XMRadio72 lol we ARE a cautionary tale for sure. This process is really hard and I wish there were more spots for these kids to pursue what they love. If she wanted to go to med school I don’t think it would have been this difficult !!! I remember the tour guide at a top school saying it was harder getting into their MT program then Harvard. We all on here know it!!
I wanted to thank everyone for the support on here. It’s been a rough journey and either way I needed a place to share and vent with others who understood. I’m wishing the best for all of you who are still waiting - i know how it feels. I’ll still be reading these posts but I just wanted to say not to give up on your journeys. Best to all.

@NewEngMTMom I am so sorry. I truly hope that things will turn around soon!

@NewEngMTMom , I am hoping for that yes from LIU!

It was a no for my S for BoCo as well.

He still hasn’t heard from Western Michigan or UW Stevens Point. At this point, I would assume it’s a no - but wouldn’t they email or send something before Sunday?

Been quietly lurking here as I am so shy about posting, but I’ve been wanting to pay it forward since I found this forum so helpful last year! So I’ll chime in now with some information regarding Hartt vs. Ball. This is in response to the question asked by @Luvmykids08, but might be helpful for others as well. My D is a Freshman MT at Hartt, and when decision time came around last year, Ball and Hartt were her favorites among her acceptances (she had 4 acceptances and 2 WLs that did not move). She debated long and hard between Ball and Hartt because after visiting them she had fallen in love with both! She expected that after visiting each school, sitting in on classes, interacting with students and teachers, and seeing a show at each it would be very clear to her which of the two was “the one”, but both programs were really amazing, with caring faculty, a close-knit MT class, great classes, great talent, and a beautiful campus. She really just wanted to attend both!

Several things ended up swaying her decision towards Hartt. First of all, I created blinded curriculum charts, where she could not identify which school was which, and it turned out that the Hartt curriculum was closer to her “ideal” curriculum (if I remember correctly, being a conservatory it had a bit more acting, a bit more music/voice classes, and less gen eds). Second, she looked at performance opportunities outside of school and whereas Muncie (the town where Ball is located) has one community theater where students can be cast, Hartford (where Hartt is located) has three regional theatres where students are often cast and can earn EMC points. In addition, the senior MT students at Hartt audition for and are cast in new works at Goodspeed, which is an incredible opportunity. Third, she looked at the showcase opportunities. Ball has showcases in NYC, Chicago and LA but they are by audition and not all students are cast, whereas at Hartt all MT students participate in their showcase, which is held in NYC. I realize showcases are not the “end all be all” but this was an important consideration for my D. Lastly, she wanted to be close to NYC, and Hartt is about 2.5 hours by train or bus from NYC. Students travel from Hartt to NYC to see shows or to audition for summer stock and even to audition for Broadway productions. Last year a freshman boy auditioned for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”, was cast, and has just made his Broadway debut! What an amazing opportunity for him! If he returns to school next year he will join my D’s class and continue as a sophomore.

Ultimately, you can’t go wrong with either program – both Ball and Hartt are equally strong and have top notch training. My D LOVES Hartt and is super happy there, but I believe she would have thrived at either school. Good luck to all in making your decisions, and to those still waiting for good news I’m crossing my fingers and sending virtual hugs.

I don’t know where my other comment went. Thank you for this great info, @DefyingGravity2 !

@XMRadio72 Yes, we ARE a cautionary tale. What heartache! I wish I had known about all this earlier. I didn’t find College Confidential until after all the applications went out and pre-screens were passed or failed. Please use our stories and hopefully they will help someone else. Still waiting to get off Wagner waitlist and hoping to hear from Hartt, but not very hopeful because others have gotten their decisions over the phone and we can’t seen to get our decision over the phone. But I know how lucky we are to have gotten into one program and we’re very grateful. Thank you everyone for supporting us and giving us useful information. It is definitely not enough to be a wonderful singer and good dancer. I don’t know what it is that separated people who got into lots of schools and people who didn’t. Hopefully college will teach my daughter to pick better material? Audition better? Get coaches? Look different? Who knows? But we are very relieved- thanks to everybody.

A somewhat surprising YES for my D for BoCo MT (she submitted a video audition only) and now we have another visit to plan…

Congrats @MTdaughter99!!

@NewEngMTMom the 20-year-old/older freshman thing is more common than most people realize at many programs. Actually, I think the additional maturity separates them from the crowd and makes them more interesting for auditions - not just for getting into programs but once they are actually on campus as well. My heart goes out to your family right now, but I’m looking forward to following your story and celebrating the successes that will eventually come.
