My d is a freshman at Rider. I can’t sent private messages for some reason. Maybe you can try sending me a message with questions.@MTmomSF
It’s funny - all 3 of my D’s BFA acceptances came from the same day at unifieds. Guess she was in the zone that day
@maisyk you can’t private message until you have 15 posts
Any waitlist action by anyone?
@muttsandMT adding a few thoughts to @MomofMTBoy’s excellent post.
- Does sleeping with a humidifier help your D or make her worse? It can go either way for those with asthma, but many of my patients who have some kind of airway reactivity find it incredibly helpful to always, always sleep with a humidifier, regardless of season.
- A humidifier is a necessity when you travel!! I recommend taking a full-sized one, b/c the travel ones aren’t always enough for a spacious hotel room.
- I echo @MomofMTBoy’s advice to see an ENT who understands singers now and begin to make a plan. It’s by far better to see a laryngologist than a general ENT. If you PM me and tell me where you’re located I can give you some laryngologists in your area - DEFINITELY worth driving a distance to see a specialist and establish that relationship rather than see a less-expert general ENT (who are great for many things but not used to dealing with the nuances of performers’ voices).
- If you haven’t already, it sounds like it may be worth it to get a CT scan of your D"s sinuses and see a sinus expert. It will be tough for her to do as well as she can in school and her career if her sinuses get her down every year. I am NOT a sinus expert - I’m a medical voice therapist - but I have worked with both students and patients who couldn’t really do well consistently until their sinus issues were addressed.
- Encourage your daughter to start thinking of her body like an athlete’s body NOW and gauge nutrition, hydration, and sleep accordingly. She may already do this. but the more she starts defining the limits of her fatigue and what helps her perform optimally, the more her immune system will love her!
Also, you have my favorite screen name ever. :o3
@MTmomSF - any questions about Molloy/CAP21, ask away!
My kids’ acceptances and rejections came from everywhere. On campus, NY Unifieds, Chicago Unifieds. There are some schools that “voice” a clear desire to have kids audition on campus (eg, Michigan). Maybe it makes a difference at those schools. Hard to say.
We have friends who have gotten in Michigan from Chicago Unifieds. No school would go to the time and expense of going to Unifieds if they weren’t truly interested in seeing the kids who are auditioning there. what would be the purpose of being there if they weren’t truly hoping to find students for their program?
^^^agreed. We know kids who have gotten in from Unifieds as well. I wonder, though, if there is even a slight advantage to auditioning on campus for some schools. I don’t know the answer - and suspect some kids will get in no matter where they audition - but also suspect if there are two candidates equivalent in every way, it could tip the balance.
I honestly think it depends on the kid. We had no idea going in if on campus or Unifieds would be better. I was terrified that she would get sick for Chicago Unifieds, but luckily she didnt. For my daughter, all of her acceptances except one came from Unifieds. She found the on campus auditions exhausting. By the time she got to audition, she felt drained. At Unifieds, she got into her groove and had a place to retreat and rest when she needed to She really thrived in that environment. The only exception was her on campus audition at Wright State. That one was two days and she was rested and did well.
I’m not sure if your responses about which is the best, Unifieds vs. on campus, re: chances of admission is in reply to my previous post. Let me clarify. I don’t know whether a student has a better chance of admission if they audition on campus, I doubt it. The schools have always said that it makes no difference to them, and I have no reason to doubt that. My feeling that on-campus is ideal is for the benefit of getting to know the school. Having a tour, sitting in on a class or two, meeting staff and faculty, seeing dorms, talking with current students, seeing facilities and possibly a show, eating a meal in a dining hall. Getting more time with the school reps on campus will be of benefit for most kids.
At the time of most auditions, you will likely find campuses easier to visit and to see everything you’d like to see, rather than waiting until April to visit schools which have made an offer to the student when you might have far less time, depending on the number.
A combination of Unifieds and on campus might work for many families, depending where you live and how easy travel is to campuses close to you. There isn’t one plan that will work for every family! Choose what works best for yours and what you can afford.
Not all on campus auditions have you sit in on classes. My daughter did four on campus, one regional, and about a gazillion (lol) at unifieds. All of her on campus auditions were on Saturdays, and not one of them had classes involved, or any more time with staff other than definitely having a dance call, which some of the unified auditions didn’t have. Her acceptances were all over the place - one on campus school (plus a WL from a campus), the regional, five from unifieds. Some big programs, some small. At unifieds she had some great experiences and a few not great ones, one that was especially a nightmare. I think there’s no way to really determine… it’s a crap shoot. Much like this whole process. Whatever fits your child is what you do. We chose Chicago bc there was no way we wanted to be stressed and squeeze things into two days, and a room at PH bc it was really easy to escape to the room, go make more tea, etc. Different things work for different people. Whatever you all chose, here’s hoping you were happy with results and can finally make decisions and move forward!
Just wondering if any movement is happening off of waitlists yet. Every one of my D’s friends that was accepted to Pace is declining after getting offers from other schools. So, maybe there will be some movement there. Anyone here that was accepted from Syracuse? Going or not going?
Two anecdotes about auditioning on campus vs. Unifieds:
- We went to a Performing Arts Day event at Montclair last fall where they said of course they accept kids from both, but they felt auditioning on campus showed extra commitment and interest in the school.
- With that thought in mind, we scheduled most of D's auditions on campus (most of her schools were in driving distance so it wasn't a hardship). HOWEVER, in early January, her acting teacher at her PA high school told the students "If you're auditioning for Rutgers, make sure to do it in NYC, because the heads of the theater department will be there." We had already scheduled an on-campus audition, and who knows if it made a difference.
But it just goes to show that it’s impossible to second-guess which is preferable.
My D had stated at the beginning that she didn’t want to do Unifieds. She wanted each audition to have its own day, and to focus on that specific audition and school that day. Also, she didn’t think she could keep up the emotion and intensity of her monologues if she had to do them multiple times in the same day. So for her, on campus auditions were preferable. She only did 2 auditions in NYC for far-away schools (CMU and UNCSA).
But others like the energy of Unifieds and the convenience of auditioning for many schools in one place, and doing walk-ins.
So there’s no right or wrong, just personal preference.
Rider University Accepted Student Day visit on Friday! It was amazing!!! We have a Private Message chat group that we started if anyone else wants to join it! Message me and I will try to add you to the group.
Was there also on Friday. Really impressed. Not sure how to message you?
@rgypsy you can’t message until you have 15 posts.
@cluelessandtired That is probably true for some schools, especially if you choose a Saturday audition date but those things I listed are certainly possible at many schools. Even schools that don’t formally organize sitting in on classes, like Tisch, with a little work, they can still be done. I’m surprised that you didn’t get more time with staff and faculty than you did at Unifieds. I suppose that depends on the schools where your D auditioned. That wouldn’t be the case at many schools with which I’m familiar.
Sorry, double post.
@alwaysamom I just remembered she did five on campus (you can tell that last one made a major impact, lol…) Three of them were very big name schools. They just don’t include sitting in as part of the audition process. In the end, a couple of them were at unifieds and I wish we had saved the money on the trips, but can’t cry over spilled milk. What’s a visa bill at this point, right?
