I have heard that from a few people, @toowonderful . Perhaps a parent of one of this year’s applicants can tell us what happened this year? It’s possible I’m mistaken and I’d be happy to be mistaken about applicants not being able to specify a preferred studio. I think it’s an important piece of the puzzle of Tisch apps, that students do that research.
@alwaysamom they must be able to request a studio because when decisions came out people were posting they got into NYU MT…and isn’t there only one studio that is MT. So those kids must have put down they would only accept MT.
@bisouu you can audition only for MT and ask that you not be considered for Acting, so in that case you will know you are MT if you get accepted. But you can’t request a specific studio for Acting (you may express a preference in the interview but there is no guarantee you will get that studio if accepted). You can also audition for MT and ask that you be considered for Acting if you don’t get into the MT studio.
@jbtcat isn’t that what I said LOL you request the MT studio when you audition so if you can do that you must be able to request other studios as well. I guess I didn’t say it the right way.
LOL @bisouu sorry I’m getting cross-eyed! I just meant that you can request an acting studio but that doesn’t mean you will get the one you request (but if you only requested MT, you will know once you get accepted to NYU that you got the MT studio since there is only one).
It is now exactly as @jbtcat describes. My daughter has some strong feelings and preferences and I wish they would have allowed discussion of choice at her interview. She did not want to overstep and thought that she wasn’t supposed to show a preference but still had a good conversation with her auditor. She did not want MT but relates to several of the different studio philosophies. I guess this is a leap of faith situation. She did a summer at Adler and liked it but is drawn to others. I guess through their time they get wonderful opportunities to explore. Two years is a long time though for a young artist/student to find themselves stuck in a philosophy that goes against their particular grain
or simply not a great fit. I hear mostly great and fantastic experiences and inspired and happy students. Tricky though…
@laylamom that was one big reason my daughter didn’t apply to NYU. She did not want to be stuck somewhere for two years and be unhappy.
Above is not a complaint. My daughter is very excited about Tisch. This week it’s the frontrunner and we eagerly await her assignment.
Still waiting on Texas Tech. Anyone else? At this point it seems like a no, but surprised they wouldn’t notify the students.
@laylamom and @bissou I agree that it sounds scary but I think I said it before that my D thought she was going to hate her studio placement when she heard what it was and then she ended up loving it so much that she stayed for a third year. She only knew one person her year who was unhappy with her studio placement and she was allowed to switch after her first year. I also wonder how do kids know they will like any particular type of training when they apply to any BFA programs (they might think they will like a particular style of training, but do they really know that)? And if you go to a school without the studio system, you get whatever training that school offers for all 4 years, and then what do you do if you hate it? I guess I’m just saying that they are all taking a risk when they enter these programs that they will end up liking and learning from the program.
@savedrama4momma someone may have oopsed. Either someone with a similar name, or it wasn’t a rejection but a waitlist or the acceptance was an oops. If she is interested in the school, call and get it straightened out. Did you get a financial aid package from them? It very well may be confusion between two students. It isn’t unusual for a school to have someone else with the same name and in some cases several. They keep them straight by using ID numbers.
Thanks @GloriaVaughn i think we figured it out!!! I found info in her portal. Looks like yes, she was accepted academically AND offered merit $… but the congrats letter is to a BA in theater. (Not BFA MT). I found the degree specifics on her portal. My D is not considering that one- it’s not the degree fit for her. That email threw us for a loop though!!! LOL
@jbtcat it’s only a little scary but much more exciting. I love Tisch and we want to know! I liked the metaphor someone here used (was it you or toowonderful) of the hat in Harry Potter.
that being said it could be daunting and I get that.
We have so much to learn about it! I wasn’t at all sure she’d get in so now I can see all the opportunities and its safe to get excited.
@jbtcat: Good point. With other schools, you’ve only got 1 choice for 4 years.
@laylamom: Congratulations! But I don’t think a Slytherin could (easily) become a Gryffindor.
@savedrama4momma I know a BA Theater major that will graduate this year and they already booked a year long contract. Just something to consider.
@Ducky312 hmm… good to know. We are really struggling with making the best choice. Do you know if your friend was able to take voice/ dance? Also- we are out of state and i figured out that even with the merit $ Temple would be our most expensive option so that honestly is a huge factor. The debt my D is about to take on has been the worst part about this… (but I know that’s part of college, not just the arts). Anyone else having trouble with even having the time to figure this out? Between tech week rehearsals, then the show, prom, school concerts, oh my gosh… she’s never home in April!
@bisouu To add to what @jbtcat said, the kids who audition for MT/the New Studio have different audition requirements than those who are auditioning for an acting studio. So, no, you’re not requesting MT, you are auditioning for MT and would not be placed in another studio, unless you said that that would be fine. That isn’t the case for those auditioning for the acting studios. So, if your D wanted to do MT, she wouldn’t have been ‘stuck’ in another studio unless she okayed it. So that isn’t a reason for anyone to not audition at Tisch.
@laylamom Thank you for sharing your D’s interview experience this year and the fact that they are not asking for a studio preference.
@hmichmom Yes, we are still waiting to hear something from Tech. My daughter knows a young man who did receive an acceptance email about two weeks ago, but he’s the only one we have heard of. This is the only school we have heard nothing from.
@kmmt22 the one school my daughter got into was from a walk in audition at unifieds in NYC. Everything about the school seems like a perfect fit for her, but it wasn’t even on our list to begin with. She was able to go to unifieds by taking a train and crashing with a friend at a nearby college. While I would have absolutely loved to take her to every school on her list, that was absolutely financially impossible for us. I’m afraid I can’t agree about unifieds.
@hmichmom D has a classmate who was admitted to Tech and another who is still waiting. I don’t think they are done yet.
