Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

@jbtcat and @cluelessandtired (and anyone else!) Thank you for the info on negotiating scholarships. Here’s the deal, I would use information from 4 schools… 2 private schools and 2 state schools (both out of state for us) The two privates have much higher pricetag, but gave a lot of scholarship money. State school number 1 has moderate pricetage for Out of State and gave a small scholarship. State school number 2 has a dramatically lower fixed price as part of the Midwest exchange. It is $10,000 less than where we are at with State school number 1 (which is where D wants to commit) The two private schools are basically the same price as SS#1 when the scholarships are applied. So State School number #2 with this overall lower fixed price is my bargaining chip I guess. How do I know if these two state schools would view eachother as equal in reputation and competitiveness? I read a few articles yesterday about how to write such a letter. Did you include things like why you wanted that particular school and program and why your S or D would be an asset to their program? I’m going to draft something today. I figure it’s worth a try. Do you think I should even include the private school info because really financially they are the same as SS#2, but they are some of the bigger name and reputation programs… Thank you!

@onewaytobroadway just to clarify – are you looking for the additional money from SS#1? With regard to what we wrote in our letter (and then later told them on the phone), we did tell them that their school was my D’s #1 choice and what she loved about their program. We did not really go into why she would be an asset to their program, but I don’t think it would hurt to include that.

@jbtcat yes. That’s correct looking to bridge the 10K gap between SS #1 and SS #2.

Okay, so then I would only use SS#2’s offer. It might be more difficult since #2 has a lower base price to begin with but it can’t hurt to try! Good luck!

I have a student currently in her 2nd year at Tisch (Adler) who has just completed the audition process for transfer/absorption into the advanced training program at other studios…thought I’d share her experience for anyone who is wondering - be aware that there is no guarantee of transferring to another studio after 2 years - but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing (unless your student is placed in a studio they really don’t feel is right for them). Not all of the studios have transfer tracks (Adler doesn’t), and this year NSB took only 6 of the 50 students who auditioned to transfer, and ETW also took a very limited number & said they had a record number of students auditioning for their transfer track. My D auditioned for both and neither she or any of her friends were selected to transfer. She will be in Adler for her 3rd year, and although she’s disappointed b/c she really wanted to explore other studios, she has been told by everyone she knows in 3rd/4th year that the 3rd year (in Adler at least) is when it all really starts to come together (mainly b/c performance opportunities are more frequent) & is looking forward to that. Also note that students can take classes in other studios as electives to see what they are like, so it’s not like they are truly stuck with just one studio or another - D took a class in Stonestreet this semester and loved it (she didn’t audition for transfer track this year b/c she still wants to focus on stage acting, but thinks she will prior to her senior year). She has taken voice lessons most semesters as well (2 w/Steinhardt instructors & 1 w/Tisch), and has learned a lot. Good luck to everyone awaiting news of placement & in making this decision!

ETW and NSB are highly sought transfer track studios, from my observation. My D transferred into ETW mid way through junior year. It was only after she was a student at NYU that she observed what she thought were great skills coming from the ETW students. I think a lot of students don’t know much about this studio until after they get to Tisch and then many seem to want it for transfer track. In terms of NSB, I can see that the available slots for MT are going to be limited for juniors unless many NSB kids were to transfer out of that studio, creating more spots.

@soozievt - exactly. And from what I understand, NSB students very rarely leave NSB so that has a big impact. I expect she will audition for ETW again for next Spring.

also - to clarify my post in case it was confusing - Adler does not accept transfers after the first 2 years; so you can transfer out but you cannot transfer in. Hope that helps…

So, if D was admitted academically to other great MT schools and received lots of aid, it wouldn’t be acceptable to negotiate with a school that she was accepted to artistically if D didn’t get into the MT program of the others. correct?

Just saw this article - and thought I pertains to multi studio discussion

Hello!
Please may I request that someone with NYU knowledge and CC knowledge please set up an NYU Studio thread? Post the link here a few times? This is an important but lengthy discussion that would be well served on its own board. You might even get More qualified people to advise you because when they search for NYU studio placement, that’s where they will land.

@FourStars did you see this thread that @123Mimi set up http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/theater-drama-majors/2073060-nyu-tisch-studio-placement-discussion-and-results.html#latest? It looks like it is what you are suggesting.

LOL, ask and you shall find a thread for it!! This group has it covered, for sure!

@EastchesterMom lol it certainly seems that way!

I noticed that someone set up a thread to discuss NYU studio placements! They noticed that the NYU questions took over discussions boards after placements came out LAST Year at this time! Check it out!

  • sorry someone already posted this!

Thanks everyone who chimed in with their unified vs. on-campus audition experiences. We did fit 3 scheduled auditions in while we were in Chicago! We also visited the bean, saw an amazing Second City show, and ate amazing pizza.

In my original post, I said I would recommend on-campus IF you have the time and resources. Time and resources are key here!! But some people have resources. Some may only have one audition. Some may not want their kids to have free reign of 45 schools across America. lol. For those people…we loved the on-campus auditions!

@fancytheatrekid -That would be like comparing apples and oranges- I don’t believe it would make the same impact necessarily that you might hope for.

@artskids All of my d’s rejections came from all over as well. Mostly from on-campus auditions. Only one regional audition (down the block from NY Unifieds) and none at unifieds. No acceptances to speak of, and one waitlist from a video submission. My d insisted on going to a couple on campus (of course, the ones that involved the most travel), only to get a big fat no (and a lot of money and aggravation related to weather and travel). #imnotbitter

Just want to say I know people who got more aid last year from several schools after saying that they may have to choose another due to cost. I don’t know if it makes a difference but they were both boys… We asked 2 schools about artistic scholarships. The cheaper school gave us a little more and the more expensive school basically said they have plenty of kids that will pay so don’t hold your breath! Haha! Good thing she actually preferred the first one!

@mtdreams - that is basically what I was told (although the college hasn’t given us their final answer yet)… “You’re in a competitive department - and if you don’t take this, someone else will!l” In other words- we want rich people. This is how the rich get richer and the poor stay poor! I have said this for years in regards to education!

The rich won’t be getting richer pursuing a career in theatre!
