What @theaterwork posted is only true at SOME colleges…more so at public universities like her D attends. At many colleges, admissions decisions don’t even come out until around April 1. Housing is assigned for freshmen over the summer. This was true for both my kids (Brown and NYU) and at many other colleges. So, as with many situations, the answer to this depends on where you are enrolling.
My daughter’s freshman year, assignments didn’t come out until July, but they were assigned in order of when people requested housing so overall the BFAs had the worst rooms because most of them didn’t submit deposits until May 1 and it wasn’t a state school. It is what it is.
Yes i was referring to this @GSOMTMom exactly. Guess I didn’t explain it properly. My d was assigned housing in the order in which it was applied for. And paid deposit for etc.
& so we signed up April 8 or whenever and to this day my daughter’s housing assignment for next year ( she’s living on campus as a soph as it’s required) is based on her ORIGINAL housing application date. So when she went online to choose a dorm for this fall, she was in the second wave of kids to choose. It all went by the date.
But yes hers is a state university. Best to just ask the schools in play to find out how your college assigns etc.
Housing does depend on the school - even some of the state schools have special housing for Performing arts students so it shouldn’t be a problem. I would ask the school how it works.
@“yaycollege!” Waitlist for D. She has eliminated all but one acceptance and one waitlist. I hope we know soon! Even if she gets called from the waitlist, she may not choose it, but it would be nice to have all the info and then make a final decision.
For what it’s worth my daughter goes to a private college and last year we put her housing deposit down and chose a dorm (and her room mate) as soon as it opened which was in Feb. (even though she hadn’t fully decided on that college). The housing deposit was refundable though so that was in our favor. Another friend of hers didn’t decide until May 1st and did get the same housing as my daughter but didn’t have a choice on room mates.
@yaycollege! My D has accepted at Hofstra for their theatre program but is staying on the WL at Emerson until they release everyone since that is her preferred choice. The hard part of that is that they said they won’t start releasing their WL until June, with a drop dead date of 7/15.Fortunately they told us at Hofstra that we can appeal in writing to get our deposit refunded and that they(admissions) didn’t know of anyone who has gotten refused.
My D will also be a May 1 girl. I am so exhausted from this whole process. Exhausted in every form of the word. My D has several academic acceptances, two artistic acceptances and two WL. It has been so draining for her that she is not leaning towards her two artist acceptances. She’s really thinking about a program that is not focused only on acting/mt but a combination of acting with a strong emphasis on production. She’s become intrigued with many aspects of the art this year such as dramaturgy, writing, and directing. I’m happy to see her start to get excited about these things after disappointments of the last few months. We’re going to visit the school next week. I’m hoping we’ll get clear definite decision while there. She has a solid second to fall back on. That one would not be an artistic focus at first but I think after some time of rest she would audition for the BFA program. She is so talented. I hate that the last few months have broken her. May 1 is in less than two weeks. Graduation is in a month. All of this will be behind us and a new chapter will begin. Regardless of where she goes to college or what she chooses to study I hope she looks back on this experience and is proud she had the courage to try. The big local summer musical auditions are in May. She has a good shot at a big part since she’s done two shows with the director, who has asked her to audition. I’m hoping and praying for a good outcome. She needs to feel the happiness that the stage brings again.
@chickadeeMES - I hear you re being broken by this process. This business has a way of breaking even the best of them - the highs are high and the lows are low. It’s life on a roller coaster!
@chickadeeMES - I empathize so strongly with you! Two weeks ago my D got very lucky with a single artistic acceptance to one of her top schools but before that point we were both SO low. Actually even now, after her “dreams came true”, we’re both exhausted. It feels like PTSD. I have had people say cheerily “well, it she can’t hack the audition process, maybe she isn’t cut out for the profession” to which my only reply is unprintable. My D is 17 years old. She’s not part of a theater family nor does she have a school that has prepared her for performing arts - that’s what she is heading towards not where she’s coming from. She and I did the PA applications on our own with some valuable but sparing last-minute help from online coaches. She did the PA applications plus 6 academic applications. She absorbed rejection after rejection and yes - we were “prepared” and no - there’s no way to be truly “prepared”. It was dreadful and I want to send you fellow-feeling and tell you that before D got her one “yes” I was telling her honestly - no matter where you go, you will find a path to where you want to be. My D is strong and talented and good - I knew she would get past this. I hope so much you know that as well for your D and you can tell her from me - it’s not just her. There is some severe randomness in this process. We always tell our kids that success comes from ability, hard work and good luck. Sometimes you don’t get the good luck and you need to keep on and find the next time when you will. Hugs to your D.
@fancytheatrekid Wagner does not assign housing for freshmen until the summer. Kids start pairing up now - usually connecting via an accepted students FB page and then final confirmation with roommate and floor assignments come out in the summer. My D has already been assigned housing for Soph year - they do that much earlier for upperclassmen. All freshmen at Wagner are housed in Harborview.
@CaMom13 you are so right. The last thing either of you needs right now is more self-doubt. Show me an artist who doesn’t second-guess everything they do! Artists are thoughtful, sensitive people and all you can do is build, build, build their confidence and hopefully become more resistant to external feedback and more reliant on internal self-worth as they grow. This process sucks, and she should be so, incredibly, inarguably, proud to have gotten through this hurdle. Recently I was talking with my (freshman MT) D, about a couple of students who were leaving her program – one for money, one to go in a new direction. And we realized that every year is a hurdle of its own nature, and to be able to get through the audition process, or the gap year process, or the dropping out of school process, or the sticking with school process, every year is something new to overcome. And any of them that are still in it, still able to create art, and share their gifts with the world after all this struggle, should be applauded. And hugged.
