You can do both at BW but it is difficult (not impossible) for straight actors to be cast in the musicals since the roles generally go to the MT and VP majors.
OCU (Oklahoma City University) has a lot of crossover. MTs must audition for all musicals and operas. And can audition for and are cast in straight shows. Acting majors can audition for and are cast in all types of productions. The BFA in Acting is a great program in addition to the MT program. I would encourage people to look at both majors at OCU. The dance performance major is also a strong major and you can find dancers in many productions also.
@songbird17 – At James Madison there is crossover with MT majors in plays and Theatre majors in musicals. Theatre and Musical Theatre majors can also audition for operas in the School of Music, and Music students for plays and musicals.
There is also crossover a NYU/Tisch.
Ithaca is known for cross-pollination between their MT and Acting programs; you usually can’t tell who’s from which program in their shows unless you check the playbill.
Otterbein has crossover.
At RIder University, the BFA MT majors MUST audition for both plays and musicals! The acting majors CAN audition for musicals, but they are not required.
Wright State has crossover (both ways). My son is an MT, but will be playing Christopher in ‘Curious Incident…’ this coming fall.
Fredonia students (acting and MT) can audition for the mainstage plays and musicals. They can also audition for the dance productions if they want to.
How possible do you think it would be to go back to a school you declined and beg for your spot back?
@collegemom2000 Oh no…what happened? Is D no longer happy with the choice? I wish I had advice for you, but i have no experience in this one. Hoping others can chime in with good thoughts for you…
@collegemom2000 - hoo boy. If the school still has openings, I am sure they’d be happy to open up a spot. If not, I’'d guess you would be out of luck. Hoping for the best!!!
@MThopeful2022 just weighing options right now, thanks!
@collegemom2000 My D works in student recruitment and I asked her what she thought. She said unfortunately they would say no to a plea like that. When the spot is turned down they go to the next person on the list of the same “type”, so they no longer need that “type”. That spot is filled. For her program they would require the person to audition again during the next audition cycle if they were offered a spot, turned it down, and then changed their mind and wanted to attend (they actually have had this happen).
Is anyone still on the waitlist for Syracuse for MT?
@hmichmom - Yes, my D still is! I have been keeping track on my Syracuse Waitlist thread, and no one has gotten off since May. Are you on the waitlist? Or have you recently heard anything?
@collegemom2000 — it will vary from school to school, and it could also vary at a school from year to year (depending on yield. It can never hurt to ask.
@songbird17 At Texas State, Both acting and MT majors must audition for everything and are cross cast (MTs in plays and Acting majors in musicals). It is far more usual though to see MTs cast in plays than acting majors in musicals.
Thanks @artskids !
Thanks for all the good info. on crossover schools! My son will definitely be adding these to his list!
