Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

My S also has an agent and I guess would be considered a ‘professional’ kid. We chose to leave his agent off his college resume because we didn’t think it was relevant plus he won’t be staying with the agent once in college but we did leave his professional credits on as it is a huge part of his past. I would hope having those credits don’t hurt his chances of getting into schools and I often wondered if it would be a negative. He’s applying because he WANTS to learn more skills and definitely doesn’t feel prepared to go into the ‘adult’ auditioning world just yet as it’s much different than that of kids. I can’t speak for all ‘professional’ kids but I assume if they are applying and auditioning to colleges, they have the mind set that they aren’t polished and are just trying to build on their training like everyone else. Some schools asked S about his experiences (more about did you work with so and so) and some didn’t bring it up at all. As much as it’s a part of his past, I’m wondering if the few minutes ‘in the room’ might have been better spent taking to him about his future and himself rather than who he worked with when he was 10. But it is what it is!

My daughter got that from one school. “You’ve already done this professionally, why do you want to go to school for it?” She had just read something about a 90-year-old cello player who still practiced every day. When asked why, he said, “I think I’m still getting better.” She told that story. I was so proud of her awesome answer.

@CTDramaMom - sounds like your D followed the same advice given to my son - BE YOURSELF! I’m so glad that she found her college fit and thrived there.
@PaMTmom - I wouldn’t sweat it at all. The arts, and the path(s) to success, are not 1 size fits all. Embracing your individuality - experiences, personality, training, and inherent gifts - are key. My S embraced his (after some soul searching), and the schools that have found him to be of interest are likely the ones that enjoy a “newbie” challenge. Ha!

@CTDramaMom a lot of schools are mentioned on this forum (maybe many are excepting) but I am really glad that it worked out for her. As stated before, many others wonder why their kid is there when they seem to be working. I wonder since applications have increased everywhere, they are looking more at experience and if you are already working, they may assume the student would miss class. I don’t know everything on this subject (obviously) just going by what I heard personally .Thanks for sharing

@owensfolks sorry to hear. :frowning: They’ll always have advanced weather.

@actingdreams, my daughter’s view, and what she expressed in her interviews, was that working as a child actor is very different from working as an adult actor. She knew that she had a lot of growth to do, and wanted a place where she could experiment and mature before entering into an audition pool with actors more trained than she was. And she doesn’t audition while in school, except for summer productions, and even then not when she’s missing classes. She’s in school to learn and grow, and feels that there will be plenty of time for auditioning later.

My daughter’s portal for Montclair says Fall 2018/Undergraduate/Musical Theatre/Freshman?? BUT she has not received an email or snail mail confirming or denying anything. When she emailed to ask about her status, they just asked her for her mailing address and told her that all decisions had not been made yet. She auditioned at NY Unifieds. So confusing…

I used to be a working singer/actress and my daughter now is auditioning for BFA MT. I remember being so annoyed by the college kids who would will come in at 5 a.m. and line up for auditions.(Nothing against your D-just brought back memories) Because we were working jobs so we couldn’t get up at 4:30 in the morning to sign up for auditions. We thought if it weren’t for them, the lineups would start later. Funny, that it’s still happening 25 years later. Maybe not so funny. I thought things were better now and that people could sign up online for auditions…:frowning:

Same!

I’m not at all suggesting it guarantees work - my comment was in reference to waiting for hours in lines - and what I have heard from program directors during my D’s audition. Nor do I know that I’m correct - just sharing the comments I heard over and over in parent meetings from MT directors that having an agent (or whatever) can help actors make audition appointments, which can allow them to do other work to support themselves.

Sunday Jan28

So sorry…

I have heard from some friends around the country: Rider is starting to send out notifications, as is NC School of the Arts and University of the Arts.

@K&Tmom hope the portal change is an excellent sign. Like giving your D a sneakpeak of a letter /email coming soon. @fancytheatrekid you will be very valuable to your D as she progresses. There is nothing like experience. I hate the 5 am line waits but hoping each kid gets an agent and doesn’t need to do so much of the earlybird lineups

@K&Tmom Go to the portal, click “Apply online and view application,” then scroll down to the bottom and click “Decision letter”

Has anyone heard from January or February Elon BFA Acting auditions? I feel like Fred said we’d know around this time. Each day that passes just makes me more nervous!

My D got her rejection from Otterbein yesterday via email after being told she was “under consideration” after New York Unifieds. Wishing better luck to others waiting to hear from Otterbein. The nos are hard to hear and are making her nervous but she has one acceptance and is still waiting to hear from some of her top choices.

@dramamama2022 Yeah. That one stung here, too. Hard to push anything out of your mind that you feel connected to.

My portal still says no audition received from NYC unifieds for Montclair. Sounds promising for you though…!!

@anotherBwaymom - You had asked about Coastal notifications- I helped out at the last audition weekend and Monica said they would be making their decisions in the next 2 weeks, by the end of February. They sometimes call, but frequently just email for acceptances. Hope this helps!
