@LyleWagoneer I agree.
It does seem quiet. Not much to do now except wait for Feb 8th.
Does seem like there are fewer “chance mes” so far this year. But some of the threads really took off in the final week as curiosity/anxiety started to crank. Also, UF doesn’t publicize the specific date in February. I talked to a parent of an applicant last night who didn’t realize that decision day was next Friday.
Any new Noles here? Probably not the best thread to ask that question, but curious regardless. I kind of regret not applying to FSU. I have so much pent-up anxiety and anticipation I wish I’d applied to help relieve some of that before UF. I’m extremely nervous. Good luck to you all
@agustinaotero my son was accepted to FSU today and hoping for good news from UF next week. Im sure there are many students here - particularly in state - who applied to both
Coming from an OOS student, how do in-state people think compare FSU and UF … I applied to UF and am nervous for next week, but I am the only student I know from my high school that did so I don’t get to hear much about it.
@RightyRiper - UF is considered the best public university in Florida. At least, most people would think so. Having said that, my son is a current FSU student and he loves it there. He chose not to go to UF for a variety of reasons and it has worked out well for him. My daughter, on the other hand, applied to UF but not FSU. Overall, FSU is rising in national rankings but UF is still the top ranked public university in Florida.
i’m applying from OOS (CA), is it much more difficult for OOS applicants to get into UF? i know it’s a state school but just wondering how it works. if anyone has any info please share :). i’m not expecting to get in at all as i just got deferred from umiami.
@RightyRiper UF is #35 Nationally, FSU #70 but beyond that UF is #8 Nationally in public universities only behind in order: UCLA, Berkeley, Virginia, Michigan, UCSB, UNC and UC Irvine and rising each year in both. The Benacquisto scholarship which is now available to all NMF OOS as well as in state will continue to draw in some of the top academic kids in the nation.
@sagh527 OOS acceptance rates at UF is about the same as in-state rates.
We have a lot of UF and FSU alumni in the state, so we argue about this all of the time. ![]()
My daughter applied to UF only, while her best friend (who’s starting medical school in the fall) applied only to FSU as freshmen.
In general, most in-state residents think highly of both universities.
UF admissions is more competitive (and more holistic), so that influences most folks thoughts when comparing UF to FSU.
@sagh527 The overall OOS rate last year was very similar to the instate rate – within a few percentage points – according to the UF admissions annual report. The big difference is the yield. Much fewer OOS kids accept admissions compared to instate. The states with the most accepted students are NY, NJ and GA. I’m sure its a complex calculation based on population and proximity.
Last year, 461 kids applied from California. 178 (38%) were accepted which is the same as the instate rate. Only 31 enrolled, though. So the yield from CA was 17% vs. about 60% for instate.
I hear it all the time from people outside Florida that UF doesn’t take OOS kids. It’s not true.
California is an excellent example, though. It has half the top 10 public universities in the country. Why send your kid 3,000 miles away and pay OOS tuition when you have so many great options within a few hundred miles.
Good luck and let us know what happens.
@Gator88NE @GatorDad305 thank you guys so much for your help! UF is a reach for me but hoping for the best!
Accepted to FSU. Decisions came out yesterday. I applied for summer at both FSU and UF. I hoped that would improve my chances. I have family who have gone to both Universities. My dad at UF. Very nervous about getting into UF. I was also accepted at USF, FAU, UCF and University of S. Carolina. Deferred at UM and Rejected at UNC. Good luck to everyone!
Everyone’s opinion on acceptance chances are welcome.
Instate female (my daughter)
Unweighted GPA 3.96
Weighted GPA 4.57
SAT 1380
12 AP classes
Co-captain varsity cheer plus decent leadership positions and 200+ volunteer hours.
@fox13weather she has a good chance! I’d guess about 75%. How do you feel about her essay?
@fox13weather Is the 4.57 her UF recalculated GPA? If yes, she has an excellent chance. If not, she still has a very good chance. The rigor is impressive. One can never be sure given UF’s holistic admissions. Essay, leadership, ECs all come into play. Let us know what happens next week.
Yes. 4.57 is her recalculated UF GPA
@GatorDad305 From what I’ve read and have heard from other folks I think (just my opinion) the OOS yield is lower for some of the reason my son ultimately didn’t end up at the University. For OOS families like my own, OOS merit/scholarships were critical in the evaluation process for schools. The popularity of UF provides them with more than enough applicants that they, like some other popular Universities, only give a small number of scholarships to the very top performers. OOS tuition plus travel expenses become cost prohibitive, or students end up with significant debt.
I also understand that their school is so overcrowded that students are forced to take classes online (which will eventually be the norm everywhere in this age of technology) but I’ve heard that along with the requirement to attend a summer session is also a deterrent. My son ultimately chose to go to a school where he’d come out with minimal debt, however, I have a rising Junior in HS who is all about UF.
I wish everyone the best of luck. This is an incredibly exciting time. Enjoy the ride!
