Class of 2023 Decisions

@JamesFL wow he got denied? That is shocking. Sorry to hear that! I am with you. My son works his butt off daily and these kids deserve to get into their home state’s flagship school. We are in Fl too. We are north of you all. I really hope our kids get in. What kind of business competitions did you son do? FBLA stuff? My son is dying to meet other kids as into finance as he is!

He does Business Professionals of America (BPA). They have their state competition next weekend at Disney Springs so he will be gone when he finds out about UF (while we wait anxiously for word). He is also very into stock research. I’m sure if they get in they will know each other.

Oh yes definitely… my son founded an investment club at his school…they’d get along great lol Good luck to him this weekend. My son was supposed to go to Moneyshow in Orlando Fri and decided not to go which is good since we’d be going crazy waiting on him coming home before we could find out too! LOL

OOS students shouldn’t have any more challenges than in-state students (other than cost). Florida students are a very diverse lot,and are not very cliquey when it comes to your state of residence.

@Gator88NE Thank you that is the vibe I kind of felt but I was still curious. I am also applying to UGA where OOS % is similar, but I feel that the students at Georgia are more cliquey.

@RightyRiper my son has applied to both UGA and UF as well because of their outstanding business schools, as he intends to major in Finance. UF has more of a national profile and may have a slightly more diverse student body, but UGA offers the Athens setting, near Atlanta. Each campus levels the playing field for all students with their school spirit and opportunities for involvement. College is about creating a career path and both colleges have a deep and connected Alumni. You really cant go wrong with either.

In State Male

3.9 UW

sagh527…UF will actually tell you what your recalculated GPA if you call and ask them. I did that for my daughter and they told me.

@chgoodie Wish I knew that back in 2014 and 2017…I would have called.

I was able to figure UF’s GPA, when I completed the SAR. Still, it would have been nice to hear a confirmation. :-bd

@RightyRiper I don’t know if Georgia is more cliquey. UF is more diverse, but UGA isn’t the same school it was 30+ years ago.

The best way to avoid the “clique” problem at large state universities, is to get more involved in campus actives. Join and tryout a few student clubs (both schools have Hundreds). Find your tribe. That’s really one of your most important goals in your first year (and why living on campus as a freshman is recommended). It doesn’t have to be a large group of friends as it will grow over time, especially when you’re a junior and start taking the core classes for your major.

Good Luck!

@Gator88NE How did you figure the UF GPA from the SAR? What scale did you give an A, and what scale did you give a B? You dropped electives, I"m assuming?

@TV2000 If you filled out the SSAR, following thier directions, it shouldn’t be that hard. You should have only included academic classes, and you had to identity if the class was standard, honors (pre-aice/pre-IB), AP, DE, IB, AICE, etc.

You also have to include every academic course that you attempted for high school credit while in middle school/junior high school must be listed on the SSAR.

Below is how you should have entered your grades. All of this is fairly easy for in-state students, but it can be a pain for OOS.

An A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0

Then each AP/DE/IB/AICE class is worth an extra 1.0 points, while honor/pre-aice/pre-IB classes are worth an extra 0.5 points. Add up your points and divide by the number of grades.

Pluses and minuses are not used in the admission review process and cannot be entered in the SSAR.

@Gator88NE You state, “You should have only included academic classes.” Is this correct? I thought the instructions specifically states that ALL courses must be entered as it shows in your transcript, and non-academic classes (i.e. Phys Ed) gets categorized as, “All Other Courses.” If you’re correct, then my DS’s Weighted GPA would be much higher since his non-academic “A’s” weighs it down.

@Gator88NE I followed the instructions from the SSAR so I have my total As, Bs, etc. Now I need to know if I count every class (example PE or Other) just as @sawadeeka is asking.

Did everyone get the email from UF a few days ago? I didn’t and really don’t want to wait till late March.

I got the email. I don’t believe that it has any indications of acceptance though.

I think the only thing you don’t count is like band, art classes, non academic electives, and HOPE or and drivers ed if ou took it at school. All humanities, math, science, English, Languages, and Gifted classes, APs, etc count whether they were elective or required. I know in our county honors and AP are counted the same as a 5 so definitely everyone’s will go down a little since we don’t have AP foreign language only honors available. Some kids take a lot of honors and no AP and it will make a big difference for them. Then again, getting rid of the non-weighted HOPE requirement will probably offeset the language. For Year 1 and 2 foreign language we don’t even have an honors available.

UGH made a big difference in my sons – 4.89 to a 4.7 :frowning:

what are the chances of a hispanic male OOS with a 4.03 UF recalculated GPA and a 1410 SAT for the business school?

@sawadeeka Sorry for the confusion, it’s been awhile since I had to help fill out a SSAR. If you had to include all classes, then yes, you would still not count non-academic classes when calculating your GPA, even if it’s listed in the SSAR.
