Class of 2024 - deferrals or denials for EA applicants?

Son was just accepted to CEHD! His second choice, but he’s happy! Now have to make some final decisions.

Got deferred today for Computer Science at the College of Liberal Arts. Stats are 3.3 and 25 ACT with good EC’s and a good essay. Very frustrating, I know several friends who got admitted with lower scores than I have. Do you guys know when they usually get back to you? Do they really only let you know at the end of March?

I can’t believe it took this long just to defer me as well
Same Major/College
3.4/3.9 GPA
1340 SAT/29 ACT
OOS (Illinois)
2 Varsity Sports, 2 Part Time Jobs, started an official AP Study Group, NHS, 100+ hours of volunteering throughout high school
I’m not about to wait 2 more months just to be waitlisted or denied. UMN is essentially out for me.

@wadewoodson and @Yearofthegeno7 My son was also deferred from CLA, uw GPA of 3.86 (with 7 AP courses) and ACT of 30, along with dual enrollment at a local university. Great ECs, 100+ hours volunteering, employed, strong essay and LOR, etc. I am completely at a loss. There does not seem to be consistency with the acceptances/deferrals. My kid must just fall into a box that’s already been checked for them.

@drjdillon Congratulations! I’m happy to hear you finally received a decision and that it was a good one!

I was just deferred from CSOM. Applied on November 11th through Golden Gopher app with a 33 ACT and 3.96W/3.883UW GPA. Lots of ECs (my most impressive being DECA, for which I was Director of Recruitment junior year and am currently President, and have competed at state and nationals), FBLA, NHS, NBHS, volunteer at nonprofit cafe for 4 years, two different jobs, academic peer tutor, and high school and club volleyball. 4 AP classes (AP Lang, AP Econ, AP Psych, APUSH), and a few dual enrollment courses. I changed my major right after I applied after mistakenly choosing the wrong one, so not sure if that has anything to do with it. Didn’t send letters of rec but wrote both essays. Really surprised by the deferral.

S was deferred CSE (BS Chemistry). 1510 SAT (790 M / 720 R). GPA 3.5 UW, 4.6 W. AP classes: Calc AB (5), Chem (4), Bio (4), Physics 1 (4), Human Geo (5), Lang (3), taking AP Stats now. Two varsity sports, plus a few other clubs, jobs, volunteer, etc.

My son applied RD January 1st and received an acceptance via Application Trackerl on January 13th to CSE. His stats are 4.3 weighted gpa/3.93 unweighted and scored in the 99th percentile on SAT. He also received the AP Scholar Award and has played basketball since freshman year. He received a letter stating that FA offer would come mid-February as well as a hard copy of acceptance letter.

@kyannwy Where are you from? This is another deferral that doesn’t make any sense!

I am very confused about their admission timeline as I applied RD in December and got accepted on Feb 3rd.

I was deferred on Jan. 29th. After entering fall grades my checklist status went back to application complete. This morning when I checked it to the right of application complete it says update available. But when I view update it is still the old deferral letter. Wondering if it means a new update will be loaded soon! Or means nothing at all… Does anyone else deferred see this change too? It was definitely not there before.

@khgh2020 – I think it’s a new update. My S is in the same boat (deferred + added mid year grades) but does not have an “update available” note on his portal. Good luck!

I was deferred in January and I got an email today saying there was an update to my application and I got in

Computer Engineering
OOS
4.01W
1410

I also got in too! Earlier today is showed update available but it took awhile for the new update to show. I wasn’t accepted into my first choice in Carlson but am excited about the acceptance. There is still a chance they will admit me under my first choice but I will be notified by mail (not sure when).

@khgh2020 Congratulations! How long did it take for you to be notified of your acceptance after you updated your midterm grades?

@ie2020 I updated my grades around 1/30, as soon as I go the deferral, and the acceptance was posted on 2/12.

My son received his acceptance on 2/24 after being deferred on 1/13 and updating his grades on 2/4.

Finally! My S received an acceptance (College of Science & Engineering – first and maybe only choice) yesterday after being deferred EA and updating grades around 2/4… This was the first school he applied to on October 17th or thereabouts, and the very last decision.
