Class of 2024 Early Action Thread

does anyone think tomorrow is a possibility?

@wyntersauce You should have a good chance, but since UMich cares so much about yield they may reject for being too good! However, don’t take anyone’s advice to seriously on here because we aren’t the ones deciding

@2022soon I think you are correct. They just made it super easy to withdraw applications!

How hard is it to get in EA OOS?

To my knowledge there is not a required timeline to withdraw your other applications if you are accepted ED elsewhere. Last year, my son was accepted ED elsewhere and did withdraw his Michigan application the next day (Friday 12/15, I think), knowing UofM decisions were coming out the following week. He did not want to get in and have his friends that had Michigan as their first choice not get in, especially since they were competing from the same school. His advisor said it was definitely appreciated but not required. I believe she said that generally they want all other applications withdrawn within two weeks, and that most kids do not withdraw because they want to see if they got in, which is unfortunate.

@ling2020 I think most EA OOS get deferred…unless their application is very compelling. However, I have heard that many of the early deferrals turn to acceptances. I think it is pretty easy to get in if you are in-state. On a previous post on this thread someone said that his/her mom is friends with an admissions officer and she said that they deferred a lot of kids. According to the UMich website, they claim to say that they read all applications, some even multiple times, but you have to take what they say with a grain of salt.

I have a friend who graduated last year from the best all-girls private school in the state of Wisconsin and she had a 35 ACT, 3.97 UW, really good EC’s, applied early, and was straight-up rejected. I don’t know the whole story, but I think that this is strong evidence of their ā€˜yield-protect’ techniques in order to fight for their U.S. News ranking, which is the website MANY students, including myself, use to choose colleges to apply to. Because many of the students applying to UMich also apply to ivy’s and other elite institutions, Michigan will in some cases reject them if they perceive they are the safety. I guess we will not know for sure until they release the decisions, as for me…I’m betting on tomorrow.

College counselors are all over their students who get in their ED schools to w/d their apps at other schools. My sons school (private) they said that they also sent word out to the schools and my daughters school (public) said they do for the most competitive schools. They want their students to have the best shot and it is sad that another student would hold out and potentially take away a spot for another student. But I am sure it happens.

@jrowe20 Yes! Our school is very specific that after an ED acceptance if the aid works all apps are to be immediately removed. My kid has reminded his friends admitted this week, ha!
Whoever asked about the admissions map. I must have found it on their page. I will look up your state if you let me know which one!

@cadavisj10 Thanks for the response. I’m OOS from VA with relatively hight stats (1540, 790 Math 2, 750 French, 4.0 GPA, National Merit Semi-Finalist, full IB Diploma Candidate, etc.) and (hopefully) made it really clear in my app UMich is my no. 1 choice. We’ll see on Wednesday, though. :frowning:

My school hasn’t sent a lot of kids there…so I’m pretty pessimistic. Also, does showing demonstrated interest help? I visited the campus, sign up for all the information sessions, have communicated with my intended major’s department head, etc.

@FoxRulz I wonder if the notification from the schools in considered official and thus those students don’t ever get a decision from UofM? It would make sense if it worked that way, but I am not sure it does. I just know of several friends who’s kids have waited a week or two to withdraw so they could find out whether or not their kids got in to other schools. Definitely in everyones best interest to withdraw immediately. I think the other consideration is that you would not want to withdraw anything if you are waiting for financial aid info from ED school, which often comes a week or two later. I just would be surprised if the counselor could officially withdraw an application.

I’m on a Facebook page with UMich parents. One of the parents mentioned that she had dinner with someone who works in Admissions. She showed her an email saying EA decisions will be released on Thursday.

@ling2020 Awesome! I think if you show that you are explicitly interested, and that UMich is your number 1, they will most likely consider your application to be more genuine. Because it is your first choice, especially if you said you would attend if admitted, I think they would be more likely to admit you. I sent my admissions rep from Wisconsin an email giving a more holistic view of me, the reasons why I did the activities I participated in, and a sexual assault/harassment education program for 12 graders that I am working on with my principal. I told her verbatim, ā€œIf the admissions committee chooses to accept my application, I would confidently join the class of 2024ā€. I also think that campus/admissions visits are helpful and important because they show the university that you are serious, which can be a double-edged sword, especially for students that may not have the economic means to get to the university.

If you get deferred/waitlisted I think it would be best to send them (or rather any school you applied and got deferred or waitlisted at) an email that gives an update about your fall semester, senior year accomplishments/updated activities.

Wednesday or Thursday can someone please make it clear what we should expect.

I’m also OOS VA applicant with a 4.5w 3.89 uw
34 act
And made it clear I would want to go there with a really strong why Michigan essay
I have lots of ECs but nothing groundbreaking (standards honors societies, sports, Awards, clubs, and volunteering)
Whole family goes there and I’m really nervous
I applied to LSA

@ttd11244 I am really hoping for tomorrow, but realistically, I think it will be on Thursday, especially because of @myname99 's post recently.

Michigan experts…
Does anyone know if Michigan is needs blind?
In state? Out of state? International?
Anyone have specific info on each category?

@2022soon https://finaid.umich.edu/how-aid-is-awarded/

As far as ED and withdrawing… Lots of people do withdraw and why you will all wait till Thursday for your announcement. This way Michigan won’t have to deal with the parents of deferred applicants.

Getting deferred is a thing at Michigan. Many get accepted after that.

Many RD applicants with acceptances elsewhere do wait till they see their financial aid awards /merit from their RD school. If they can’t afford their RD school and get accepted into Michigan(or any other affordable school.)and can afford it then they can release their RD decision. Hope that makes sense to you all.

Just remember… It’s Not about you. Michigan is building a class. Don’t take it personally.

People accepted will get emails and a paper acceptance.

Good Luck!!! ???.

Oops edit my own post ^^^^^ change RD to ED… It will make more sense now ??.

GLUCK everybody

@myname99 Just checked out the Michigan parents Facebook group and the lady who claimed she went to dinner w an admissions counselor had the last name Block. This leads me to conclude it’s the same crazy Mrs. Block that repeatedly said that claim on this forum. #trustnobody.
