Ya, that line wouldn’t work on my kid. I think in one class, math, a 45% was a B+. ?
Get ready folks!

Does anyone have any idea if UMich is known for yield protection? Or if I’m just seriously not going to get in?

@sushiritto… They all want in and don’t realize what they are in for… Lol… ?.
@benandjerrys101. They have in the past. People that for accepted and deferred don’t look that dissimilar. Hang in there. This is only the first part of this game. Write the LOCI letter that they are asking for. Many, many kids get in, in the upcoming waves.
@alihahkfo. No. Some said they already sent one in. Take a day or so and relax. You want to write something meaningful. You don’t want it to sound rushed. They understand everyone wants in. Don’t just rehash your essay. They have that already.
@iEngineerThings. Because they just can’t possibly take everyone in this first round. Don’t second guess yourself. Follow the letter and send what they ask. Nothing more. If there’s a link for your grades have your school send those. Many kids won’t accept for various reasons. There are still plenty of spots available.
Does this mean that it is better to be deferred? Because if Michigan is practicing yield protection, then does that mean they value deferred applicants over those who have been accepted?
@larscars. Not following your logic. But it would go :accepted >deferred >wait listed >rejected.
If you send in your Loci form and any other information they are asking for then they know you want to continue. Many at this stage will drop out or not accept for various reasons. Keep plugging along and see where it takes you.
Is amazing they deferring students most colleges would love to have.
Because of finals I wasn’t going to check until the weekends (because I was worried I would be bummed out by any EA decisions) and I got my email at 5:26 the day it came out. Today, I got the email congratulating me for being in the class of 2024 for film and television! I still haven’t checked my official applicant portal to check if it was film production, but I’m pretty happy and confident! Did anyone else get in for EA film production?
For those wondering, I won’t post my stats but it is above normal for my major, I am a minority (in terms of race), am confident in my essays and recs, and I did the summer screen writing program two years ago (I was one of the only juniors that year and was accepted into the summer program even though my application was incomplete due to my rec not turning it in that summer. I had Mark Even Shwarts as my teacher for two weeks and highly recommend it if you have kids interested in film!)
I don’t know about any scholarships or honors yet, but I will look at my portal this weekend!
Congrats to anyone else (LMU 2024, WOO) and I wish you luck for all the defers! Even if this wasn’t the school to accept you, I hope everyone keeps their hope and stride this season!
@thitt87 agree re ED2, going to do WashU now, Michigan playing games…
@Knowsstuff What I mean is that it seems like they defer high-achieving students that they believe could get into more prestigious schools/are using UMich as a backup. Then if they see that the applicants are actually interested, then that’s when they get accepted, which supports the fact that most deferred students do indeed get accepted. Therefore, wouldn’t it be more of an honor to be deferred because they feel like you are more high-achieving and likely to get into higher standard schools than the rest?

CHANCE ME. Want Michigan bad, do I have a good shot? What can I do to get in?
@larscars. Lots of deferred end up getting in but not most. I got home late from work and I am looking at the accepted. There are many very high GPA /stat students getting accepted. Actually seems higher then last year just by perusing but those numbers will be out soon enough.
But of course all schools know when students go to the next phase that they have interest in the school. Many will just drop out at this point. Many accepted will end up elsewhere due to financial or “Fit” reasons.
Every year students find out that Michigan really isn’t a back up. Many will get accepted to the Ivys and rejected by Michigan. But many will also be rejected by the Ivys and accepted to Michigan.
Daughter accepted!??

Congrats to everyone who was accepted. Wishing the best of luck to those deferred.
Was anyone else flat rejected from Michigan? I applied to engineering and I am in-state with a 1530 SAT, 3.93 GPA UW (my school doesn’t weight them), 800 on Math II and Biology E, 770 on Spanish, 12 APs total (6 this year). I don’t think my essays were garbage, I had pretty decent ec’s, and I checked over my commonapp to make sure everything was in order. I’m just really surprised that they rejected me when almost everyone else receives a deferral. Is it a good idea to contact them and ask them why?
My son has very similar stats except we are out of state. He was accepted in Engineering.
@dogsgaloree - The comprehensive studies program allows you to get special attention in advising, tutoring, and class selection. You will be able to select discussion groups that typically don’t fill-up and have smaller class sizes. It also allows you to come to campus next summer and attend the summer bridge program before other students arrive.
CSP is offered to students who come from less competitive high schools where students may not be as prepared for the rigor at UMich as students from competitive high schools. It is great because when choosing your classes, you can choose regular sections or CSP sections. One or two students from my daughter’s school get in every year and they’ve had great experiences!
My daughter was deferred.

Awesome leader. Captain of multiple sports teams and drum major.
Has taken 5 APs, taking 5 this year as well. Highest AP scores were 3.
6th out of 300 in class
LoR were excellent.
Not sure how good the why Michigan prompt was, but it was her work, her words.
This years grades are good, so that will help.
Not surprised. UM is crazy tough and her test scores were light from what I have seen. I think she will send in the LOCI. She decided on UM late in the process, so she has not visited. We are in Delaware, so maybe we swing by in the next month or so and see if she would like it, if she were fortunate to get in.
Congratulations to all that were accepted. Be proud. Hearing some of the reports of pure joy made me smile!
Those that were deferred, recall it does not define you. Where you go to school is important. IMO, what is more important is what you put into it, regardless of institution attended.
There are rejections in EA, but I don’t remember seeing any here in CC today. And that’s mainly due to high stat small sampling here.
I’d call and ask if there’s a re-review or protest provision available. Maybe your application was incomplete?
