Invited to apply to LSA honors, via email … is that a routine email for all accepted?
Unless this year is different, yes it is.
If accepted into LSA Honors and Ross, they take away your honors, right? I remember reading this on the umich website but can’t find it again.
I was about to ask the same thing. I got it too.
D20 got the honors invite too.
I am seeing a lot of interest in honors, so I made a thread with some clarifying points. Feel free to discuss more on that and ask questions there.
What’s the x?
Before decisions were officially released, someone found a backdoor link into the admissions checklist. Some students had a line for “Final HS Transcript” with an X indicating it has not yet been received. Some didn’t have that line at all. Theory was that if you had the X Final HS Transcript line, you were accepted (they’d only request final hs transcript if you were accepted); if not, you were deferred or denied. Turned out to be true.
I have a question about “Fall Grades”. My DS is deferred, his portal reads
“Your high school counselor should submit any new Fall-term grades that are available on your behalf through the Common Application/Coalition Application”
DS high school gives quarterly grades and a midyear grade which is the average of the first 2 quarters. His HS counselor submitted first quarter grades back in November. Second quarter/midyear grades will be available late Jan/early Feb. They will most likely be slightly lower than his first marking period grades. My question is does he need to submit his midyear grades or will his first marking period grades suffice? Would prefer he not contact his AO with this question in case it looks a bit fishy.
For reference, his check list is as shown below (sorry couldn’t figure out how to paste the screen shot) Everything has a green check mark except for “Application” which has a square.

I think they’re going to want mid term grades since they aren’t due until 2/1. Will include finals etc and the full semester…students that have senioritis likely blew off finals, so they would want to see that…at least my counselor told me that on Monday, as I asked her to send my mid year. I would guess they just want to ensure first semester grades are similar to prior year track record and that they are challenging, likely will be expecting AP Calc, AP Stats, AP History etc. no idea though.
Bottom line though my counselor said they’ll want mid year full semester grades. No idea, if i was that smart i wouldnt have been deferred lol.
My counselor said that all the calls she gets from schools (including U of M) is for full first semester grades. She noted that the schools also want to know how prospective students performed on final exams in 12th grade given the propensity for students to develop senioritis which is totally understandable. In fact i asked her to send my first quarter grades in nov and she said “no if they want them they’ll call or email you or me and will want the first full semester”.
Don’t be surprised when they want mid term grades. It’s common. They don’t want part of a semester but full grades for that testing period. Also don’t be surprised when they ask for grades and then like your accepted the next day.
Some of this has to be computerized and obviously some not.
Also they do care about rigor in 12th grade classes and achieving excellence in it. They expect that instead of senioritis, that your actually preparing yourself for college now. Pro Hint: nice thing to say on the 250 word essay in a one liner.
Yes they are expecting you to take more challenging classes in senior year and if you didn’t before take AP class’s or add to what you previously did. AP Stats though is considered one of the easier APs and would substitute that with something else.
They have never provided the breakout. Ross is known to continually review apps in waves, with acceptances in the earlier waves and then as they adjust the mix of the start class, acceptances and rejections come out. At the end they maintain a waitlist.
There is no correlation between your acceptance date to the University and Ross. I remember seeing a post couple of years back about them taking a few kids off the waitlist who decided to enroll in LSA. This happened 2 weeks before classes started.
Ross decisions dont come out till Feb week 1. BTW… there are several cases of deferred applicants getting into the home college in Feb and then get into Ross in the March wave.
Not to beat a dead horse, Ross is very unpredictable - and applicants know how to start building a profile early on in HS.
Good Luck! Ross is wonderful but please weigh the pros and cons of an undergrad business degree vs. a core quant degree and then an MBA. A lot of top programs are de-emphasizing a BBA. Michigan has great options from IE (top 3), informatics, CS, econ, engineering etc etc etc.
@sushiritto
Stats for my son…if you are still tallying
ACCEPTED EA - KINS
30 ACT
3.8 UW/ 4.3 W
OOS
Had the X
Dd is so excited to be admitted!
Accepted - Engineering
1470 SAT (790 math/680 reading)
97 gpa (I guess 4.0?) unweighted
OOS
No idea about the X
Can you apply to ross if you have already been admitted EA to LSA?
also is ross really cutthroat? is it worth it?
Has anyone gotten an email after they submitted their LOCI ?
Ross is no more cutthroat than any other premier ranked progam. There is good group of genuine bright kids and some posers…
Its a great program if a BBA is your calling.
You had to specify in you app to be considered for Ross and send a portfolio. If you applied EA, the door is probably closed as a direct admit. If you are appluing RD, you still have a few days.
If you got accepetd as EA and join the university, you can apply as a cross campus transfer. It is not easy. Need good grades, great essay, new ECs in the first year and it is as competitive. I believe you can find stats on the ross website. They take 125 rising sophomores.
