Class of 2024 National Merit Discussion

My son received the certificate from his school a few days after the portal indicated he was a finalist. He receive a paper copy of the letter a few days after that.

I can help with all this. Yes if they are admitted to UF and select UF as their 1st choice by the deadline.

And yes, if your student does not get the $2500 from NMC, then UF will automatically give them $500 which qualifies them as scholars.

I’m trying to understand something that I feel is probably simple, but my head cold is blocking all comprehension! In reading the guide it seems to indicate that college-sponsored scholarships will only be offered if no other NMSC scholarship has been awarded. So is it possible that a student could miss out on, for example, a $2,000 per year (total value $8,000) college-sponsored NM scholarship, because they received the $2,500 NMSC scholarship? Trying to wrap my head around this. The timing is such that college scholarships are decided long after the NMSC scholarships are given, right? Someone explain this to me like I’m a kindergartener, please! Daughter is undecided but wondering if it would be wise to put down one of her top choices as 1st choice before tomorrow, then change later. NM materials seem to indicate that changing up to May 1 is fine, but after May 1 any college offers are final and can’t be changed. Thanks!

I’m not sure that I understand all of your questions, but I’ll give it a try.

There are two types of scholarships.

One is often large (ex. full-ride or half tuition). Those larger scholarships are awarded based on how the university defines it. For example, Tulsa awards their large scholarship to Semi-Finalists. USC awards their half-tuition scholarship to Finalists.

The second scholarship is what turns a Finalist into a Scholar. At many schools, it stacks on top of the larger scholarship described above. Those smaller “college sponsored NM Scholars scholarships” are usually under $1K/yr.

Both the NMSC $2500 scholarship and corporate NM scholarships will turn a finalist into a scholar. If a student is already a scholar because they were awarded either the NMSC or a corporate scholarship, they will not be eligible for a college sponsored NM Scholars scholarship.

Our school holds on to the certificates until spring and presents them at senior awards night.

Do we know when the $2500 scholarship from NMSC will be announced? That would be the first group of the NMS.

The $2500 National Merit Scholarships are communicated on March 21.

Congrats. Is one of the parents an employee of the corporation?

Just curious what are the criteria to receive a corporate scholarship.

On 3/21, will students portals be updated with scholarship letters? Or will only the school be notified. And will all the National Merit scholarship notifications be uploaded, or do they come in waves? Thanks

Yes, the scholarship my son was awarded is linked to parental employment. I don’t think this is true for all corporate scholarships, but I think it is for many of them.

And did your son receive an email to check his natioanl merit portal?

Thank you!

No, still no email–the link is just sitting in his portal.

Thanks for clarifying.

It seems like the vast majority are tied to parental employment, or location in proximity to the company. Looking forward to next week to see if daughter gets one of the non-corporate $2500 scholarships. Mom and Dad don’t work for big businesses.
