Class of 2024 undergrad/Class of 2022 grad: The Tours, the Auditions, the Journey

I’m so jealous of those of you who are already hearing back from schools. My daughter got her applications in early, and we’ve been just waiting since then. Only one school has come back so far, and that was just admission to the university - we still need to hear about the pre-screen. Ahhhh! What I really want for this holiday season is to get travel plans squared away!

@runninglate I feel ya! There is so much hurry up and wait about this whole process. First you wait to hear about the prescreens…then you set audition dates…then you wait for admission…and in some cases, then you wait weeks more to hear about scholarship money.

The hardest part is that a lot of the non-music kids do EA or ED and are cheerfully announcing their schools as early as December, while many music kids don’t make final choices until the very end of April. So deep breaths. As many others have said, it’s a marathon not a sprint.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. My S sumitted 3 of his applications yesterday. He will be done with the rest by tomorrow morning. Good luck to everyone.

@Doransa congrats on the submissions and almost being done. S recorded on Mon, merged audio and video on Tues and decided one song wasn’t good enough, and is re-recording that now. So a few steps forward, one step back.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! Wishing you health, happiness and success now and always.

For those who are waiting on either prescreens or EA acceptances, things will start to move next month. I noticed that Berklee (for instance) sent EA offers on 12/18 last year — hoping you all will get them early as well. Please note that Berklee and many others send decisions via the all-important portal — the online account the student opened with each school to submit applications. If your kid is like mine, s/he may not have kept track of all the portal user names and passwords, leading to delay and annoyance down the line. You may want to suggest they put a list together when they have some down time, so that when the email arrives saying, “we’ve got important news! Click here!” They’ll be able to get to the decisions!

D needs to get in the habit of checking her email, first! So many near disasters… Maybe she’s finally learned. ?

@murray93 same here. Just yesterday we were telling him If he can fill out all those forms and submit applications he should be called to audition by default.

So glad to be done! She applied to 11 schools. Not sure how we choose which ones to travel to for live auditions. Now D can focus on her schoolwork for a change. Hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving weekend.

11! Wow! I only saw two on your list! That’s marvelous that she did so many. Some may fall away, and that’s fine, too. Never hurts to throw a wide net.

@akapiratequeen I agree with the wide net approach. It’s really hard to know how she compares to the other kids out there. D plays violin and it’s a super crowded and competitive field. We figured this way she will have more options.

Hi! my D20 has applied as a vocal performance major at Boston University and USC. She applied as a musical theatre major at 4 schools, a theatre major at another 2, plus non-performance majors at 2 schools. So far she has received 1 acceptance for MT, has done one other live audition, passed a MT pre-screen and has a live audition scheduled for January, was passed over for MT from one pre-screen (still being considered for an academic acceptance, though she will pass, based on her current acceptance). Still waiting on vocal performance prescreens.

This amounts to recording 3 monologues, 2 dances, 3 musical theatre songs, and four arias/art songs in three different languages (knowledge of 8 in four languages for auditions). And 16 essays.

Good luck to everyone!

Wow @mindfulmom , that’s alot of work! But at least she will end up with a wide array of choices.

So S received an email from Frost saying Please do not call admissions because the faculty need time to review all prescreens and they don’t anticipate sending audition notices until late Dec or Jan 1! I wonder if this is later than the last few years…it sounds like they are flooded with applications for both EA and Regular. I wish S had had his prescreens ready to apply EA but no use having regrets at this point. It will be a looong Christmas break I fear.

After following the last few years Journey threads I know I’d better practice being patient haha but that’s just not me. S on the other hand seems to be taking it all in stride.

@raincat we got the same email. I thought it was rather abrupt sounding. They put some words in all caps and added exclamation marks too. Geez, I get it, don’t call. Other schools wrote similar emails but a little nicer. I really prefer the friendly approach.

@SweetStrings lol. It was surprising because it seemed they were stressed! We had no intention of calling. Even though S is still waiting for a Canelink account. I hope it goes smoothly though because it’s a top choice!

Tons of work getting all of our musicians to this point. Proud of each of you for the encouragement and support you give them in pursuing their dreams. At times, it seems there is still so much to do, but it will all be over in a few short months.

Headed to New Orleans tonight for daughter’s audition at Loyola. She’ll get to sit in on a couple classes tomorrow and audition on Saturday. Supposed to have a lesson as well. Hoping it goes well, as it is one of her top two choices. Looking forward to the trip and time with my daughter.

Thanks for the kind words! I am excited for you, @musicfamily. In spite of the stress, I loved the “audition trail” and spending time with my son, helping out as momager for just about the last time (!), and being around so many talented youngsters in so many beautiful places. I wish you excitement, joy, and success!

Thank you @akapiratequeen and everyone who has shared their experiences. I have been following this forum for a few years, and it has definitely made this process easier. I think we learn something new with each year’s group. These audition trips are a little extra special for me because she attends our state arts school, so we only see her on the weekends she comes home.

@musicfamily I hope you have a great weekend together and a wonderful audition experience. I’ll look forward to hearing all your details on what happened.

We just arrive in Boston for S audition on Sat. Exciting to be here, I did my grad degree here and I’m glad we have some downtime tomorrow to enjoy the city.

Good luck everyone auditioning this weekend (I know there are some Frost people too in addition to @musicfamily at Loyola. And I too appreciate @akapiratequeen and all those who have so openly and honestly shared their experiences, i we cheering for all your kids way back to @GoForth’s Journey. It’s been so very helpful.

That was supposed to be “I was cheering”. Wish I could edit and/or type slower and proof before posting haha.
