Class of 2024 undergrad/Class of 2022 grad: The Tours, the Auditions, the Journey

@musicfamily - Have a great time at Loyola! It is one of my daughter’s faves, as well. But since we spent some time there earlier this year, she just did the video audition. I hope your daughter knocks it out of the park!

@Racingfan53 Was that an admit I saw on the 2020 prescreens thread? Congratulations! What a relief to have one under your belt already!

@raincat and @musicfamily – sending strong positive vibes your way for tomorrow! Nerves are normal…deep breaths, heads high, big smiles…and they’re OFF!

Yes, @akapiratequeen , I saw @Racingfan53 's acceptance too!!! Congratulations @Racingfan53 to have that already so early on! That must feel really good.

Good luck to everyone who’s auditioning this weekend.

@Racingfan53 congrats on the acceptance!

We are here in Miami. It was a long drive. It’s been a long week. D had a cold but somehow managed to kick it. She is good to go.

Best of luck to everyone auditioning here and at other schools this weekend!

Best of luck to everyone who is auditioning this weekend, and congratulations are in order @Racingfan53 . It must be a relief.

My son submitted most of his applications on Thanksgiving day. He still has 3 more to apply. Now we are waiting for the prescreen results. :scream: I find myself biting my nails while he seems very calm.

@Racingfan53 WOW congratulations on the acceptance. Nice to have one so early.

Thanks all for the congratulations  It is really nice to have an acceptance at this point. I’m sending good thoughts to you and all your talented kids!

Thanks for all the positive vibes. Today went really well. She attended three classes and enjoyed them and the professors. She said the students had been told they were having visitors today and they greeted her by name when she walked in. Very cool. Now to nail that audition tomorrow!

@musicfamily that sounds like such a great experience! Good luck to your daughter at the audition!

@raincat hoping all goes well with your son’s audition!

@musicfamily best wishes to your daughter too! What a great day she today had already–I’m sure the positive experience will carry over and serve her well tomorrow!

So I saw multiple posters had auditions scheduled for 12/7. How did they go? Sending positive vibes to all!

@akapiratequeen, S had a very interesting experience at Berklee yesterday. Have no idea what the outcome will be but he came out smiling and said it was fun. Played his prepared piece then the piano Prof got on the adjacent Steinway (!) and asked him to call a tune and they played together, with S comping for the Prof where appropriate and then taking a solo when given the signal.

I know from reading past Journeys posts that many times positive feedback during auditions means a non-acceptance so that’s worrisome but it’s always better to come out feeling positive right?

S liked all the Berklee facilities except the cafeteria. It seemed to both of us that it was a small space for such a large student body but not a reason to not go there lol.

I’m glad we decided to do the audition live in Boston rather than locally, which was what he originally chose to do. I’m from the east coast, went to grad school in Boston but he had never been, it was good to have him see the city. It lightly snowed which was fun. So all in all a very nice trip.

We are in Miami now to visit Frost. Never got a chance to get out here before, he will meet a Prof and get a tour tomorrow. It feels weird doing a visit after applying and before any decision on the prescreen but here we are anyway! It’s right under the wire as classes have ended (so sadly no sitting in on a class) and they go into finals in a few days.

That sounds great, @raincat! I wouldn’t assume that a fun/positive response is a no — it’s more that the faculty may not have the power to admit people even if they like them, I think.

S did the five-week at Berklee and said the cafeteria was big enough and the food is actually pretty good! A lot of kids move/eat off campus so it’s not serving the whole student body. My S found tons of good food in the area; he still talks about the ramen. The dorms were really nice overall, it’s a great facility I think.

At any rate, a great start to the audition season. Looking forward to your thoughts on Frost.

@akapiratequeen, thanks for the insight on the cafeteria and food. I figured that many of the students eat off campus. Also it’s cool that they turn the cafeteria into a performance space in the evening. Also I forgot to mention that while we were waiting for our kids to audition, an amazingly talented ensemble performed for us, that was a nice touch. And as others have mentioned, the whole process was run efficiently which was another plus on a stressful day.

I hope your son is enjoying his first semester at Eastman. Are they winding down already?

@raincat yes, he’s having his first finals week and will be home next weekend! Seemed like forever but it actually went so quickly!

D’s Miami audition went well this weekend! Loved the school, and of course the weather was gorgeous. (Although as a Florida native myself, I know there is a big difference between temperate December in Miami and sweltering August or May… so we’ll try to keep that in mind when we’re shivering at some more northern audition locations this winter!)

Sounds like Miami’s EA decisions will be out in mid-January, possibly with financial info included, or at the latest the money part will be sent out by early March.

I didn’t have my password for this site on my phone, so I couldn’t login to communicate with other parents who were there, which was a bummer, because it would have been nice to put faces with screen names! Next time I will be more prepared. Now… just waiting to see where those locations will be!

Question for the group: We shared an Uber to the airport with one young man who’d flown out from California alone to go to his UMiami audition. He arrived the night before the audition and stayed overnight in a dorm with a friend who attends UM, but otherwise, he was by himself. I know there were a couple of families last year whose kids traveled to auditions alone, and I’m so intrigued by this. Anyone here contemplating sending your kid to auditions on their own? (I think it must be really kid-dependent and location-dependent – and my feeling is my D still needs a parent along with her, so I don’t think it’s something that would work for us. If it were my younger child, he’d be ready today – but he’s a different kid). However, I’m just wondering how many folks are considering it for their kids’ auditions!

S performed as part of NY’s all-state jazz vocal ensemble on Saturday. Eastman isn’t an option for him because no Jazz Vocal major there but what a beautiful theatre that is!

So far for music programs, he’s auditioned for Berklee and waiting on replies to prescreens and video auditions elsewhere. One more music program app to get out and a bunch of acting program auditions scheduled for NYC in January. It’s nice that there’s effectively a break in the action here because wow it’s been a lot.

So D’s audition at Frost was on Saturday. She felt that it went well. It was a long and intense day. We arrived on campus at 8am and she wasn’t finished until 6. But the weather was beautiful and we were very impressed with Frost.

We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott right in Coral Gables and had an incredible Cuban meal at Havana Harry’s the first night. The second night we ate at Shorty’s in Kendall (near Dadeland). Shorty’s is a bbq place and is arguably the best bbq place in The state of FL. It opened in 1951 and my family has been eating there ever since (my Mom grew up In Miami.).

We drove back yesterday. D slept the entire way home. She woke up to go to a lesson after we got home and then slept for the rest of the afternoon.

@khill87 I would not have a problem with D going to an audition on her own and staying with a friend but she would rather have me around. She is fine traveling without me but there is a certain amount of anxiety associated with these auditions and I think she is just more comfortable. Also, she doesn’t really want to have to “people” before an audition.

I think it’s just the individual preference of the student and parent.

Loyola audition went well. Daughter is happy with how she played, and that’s really all you can ask for. She said the sight reading excerpt was easy, but she’s always been good at that. They had a session for parents while we were waiting and gave info about the school and how they help the students prepare for life after college beginning their first year. They don’t have to wait until senior year to figure out what they’re going to do, which is great. They also had a Q&A for parents to ask any questions they had. It was very informative and put a lot of parents at ease. Now we wait for the decision, which we’re supposed to have before Christmas.
