Class of 2024 undergrad/Class of 2022 grad: The Tours, the Auditions, the Journey

Goodluck @raincat, can’t wait to hear!

@BenniesMom1 Also: Did you hear the news about Temple winning the Jack Rudin Jazz championship at the Lincoln Center? Also, one of its orchestras just got nominated for a grammy . . . . .

Here’s the YouTube video of the Jack Rudin Jazz competition. Temple is around 58 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6XXAeOZL-s.

Wonderful! They sound so good. Eastman had a great night, as well, but Temple won the big prize! Maybe we’ll all meet there one year! https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Jazz-At-Lincoln-Center-Announces-Inaugural-Jack-Rudin-Jazz-Championship-Top-Placing-Band-Programs-20200120

Aarrrggg, just found out S deferred to RD @ Frost.

Temple rocks!!!

Yup !! My kid texted me this video as well about the Grammy nomination with a note… “Temple is looking better and better Momma” ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLh6yRCKUhY Boyer College of Music and Dance Receives Grammy Nominations . The kid is all over that 'Jazz and Classical" music coming together. He said he might even watch the Grammy’s on Sunday… LOL. He doesn’t watch TV so this is big.

It sure is !! Now if they’ll just show me the money, we’ll be in business, but I hear they’re stingy to out of staters ? We shall see.

D made it to Maryland for audition #2 which is tomorrow afternoon. No weather issues on the way out, but the forecast for Chicago is 2-6" snow starting tonight! Safe travels to all.

@MusicMomSC sorry to hear this. Onward and upward! It may well work out. Meanwhile, who else is on the list?

Temple is looking better and better to me, too! My son didn’t apply to Temple because we just didn’t know Temple. I see names of his jazz friends in the ensemble that won 1st place. Looking at the results (1st place to 3rd place), there is a strong evidence…especially undergrad, they don’t need to study jazz in NYC.

@JeJeJe temple has a buzz for sure! How is he liking his current school?

One thing to keep in mind is relative class size. And not to diss Temple at all, it’s an amazing place! I happen to love their sound a lot. But all other things being equal, a school with 500 jazzers can field a stronger ensemble than a school with 100 jazzers. That’s why smaller schools tend to focus on studio work.

@MusicMomSC I thought his audition at Frost was in February? Is this an academic deferral? How could they defer before audition?

@songbirdmama my son applied EA, auditioned in Dec @ Frost, deferred to RD. RD for Univ Miami audition in Feb. Academically, he is in the 75th percentile. So I’m guessing he didn’t knock their socks off and probably need to wait until after all the auditions…

@akapiratequeen thanks, he’s got several acceptances already and still waiting on prescreen results from CMU (reach!). Frost is one of his top choices and one of the most expensive!

@musicmomsc So he has to re-audition? I am confused! Clearly I’m not even in the 50% percentile on this one!! Ha ha.

akapiratequeen——- We heard almost nothing from our son during 1st semester but he came home for winter break and he said that he loves his “small” school! He is well connected with faculty and friends and has paid gigs with local musicians often. (It is the good part of “small pond”.) He is at the right place to grow!

@musicmomsc So he has to re-audition?

Dont think he has to re-audition. I would imagine they will compare him against the remaining auditions. BUT it’s a great question I can ask and maybe get some more info!

Aaargh indeed @musicmomsc. Sorry. Super frustrating.

Thanks for the links. I’m sure all the bands were amazing.

Does Temple (or, say, Michigan State or Indiana U) really have 500 jazz students? I thought more like 100??

Congrats to those who survived another round of auditions today and good luck to all those up tomorrow!

@Jazzydrums This isn’t exact, maybe others can fill in! But per Wikipedia, UNT has 750 jazz students, IU around 500, Eastman 150 (but there are only 500 undergrads total). Didn’t see a number for Boyer, but with 40,000 students at Temple I’m assuming a bigger program…

@akapiratequeen Thanks for checking! After spending like 20 minutes poking around, I’m seeing totally different numbers (Boyer, Mich U, IU, Eastman MSM all around 100; UNT 250ish; IU 90ish (says there are 750 total undergraduate music majors. Is that not correct?). Seems like “size of program” ought to be a pretty easy data point. Why is such information so difficult to access??? So strange and annoying . . . . . .

UNT has about 230 students majoring in jazz studies (from their institutional research page). The number participating in the jazz program is certainly higher, but I don’t think that 750 number is accurate. There’s another approx. 1000 performance majors of all types and instruments, and close to 400 music Ed. I didn’t add up the other majors in the CoM. There could be some overlap too. My son is listed as a double major in performance and music Ed at the moment.
Those numbers include grad students. In jazz, it’s about 180 undergrad and 50 grad.
