is there a thread for music school acceptances for this year like there was one last year?
My son’s flight back to his school after spring break has just been cancelled this morning. He wasn’t going back to school anyway due to campus closure. But I waited long enough to see if “United cancels his flight” instead of we initiate a cancellation. We got full refund, not full credit for future flight.
I wonder how hard and unsure especially for music schools which usually have lots of international applicants / students. They may expect a big decline on international enrollments due to travel restrictions / visa issues. Is it better for domestic students this particular time? It has been a very challenging year for international music students just to arrange to fly into US for live auditions.
Even in US, many high school students / families are changing their idea from going to school / university very far away from home to school / university closer to home. I totally understand it is really challenging to deal unexpected moving. Very disturbing in middle of academic year.
In the mean time, many college students seem doing a petition for a tuition discount in this semester. Especially performing arts and visual arts, they are missing a lot of in-person instructions in this semester. Very sad.
Not sure if this is what you’re looking for or you’re looking for the one which just lists the schools and the date their decisions come out? That’s someone around here too but I don’t frequent that one so don’t have the link handy. You can search if that’s what you’re asking about.
With New York’s shelter in place order about to take effect, our son, who lives on his own, decided to move back in with us for a while. All his March gigs have been cancelled along with most of his April gigs (and the rest will likely cancel at some point). Facing the prospect of being alone for several weeks, at least, he opted for having the company of his parents. We feel for him, but are delighted to have him home. And music in the house! He’s on the piano practicing now. Not jazz, but Bach, his first love. I actually teared up a little.
I hope all of you and yours are safe and healthy in these trying times. And that you are able to enjoy your time with family. Appreciate your kids while you still have them at home! Also hope the wonderful admissions results keep rolling in and you can look ahead to a more normal future.
@jazzpianodad, glad your son is safe at home with you.
My jazz piano kid, at home waiting for decisions, is right this moment helping his little sister learn a piece from a Ghibli movie. Makes me happy.
I think all our music kids will find their way and continue making music and creating during these unprecedented, upside-down times.
So, no Frost news today I guess. ?
Thanks @raincat. Their love of and passion for the music really is inspiring. So great that your son is into music from Ghibli movies. Mine is too. One of his earliest jazz compositions, and still one of my favorites, was inspired by the music from Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky.
Best of luck on the rest of your son’s admissions decisions. I see from the acceptances thread that he’s already in at Berklee, which is obviously a great school!
sadly no…
I checked out the U Miami thread here in CC and found this:
“We just called and spoke with someone from Frost. They are working remotely and the decisions probably won’t be posted until the end of the month”.
Ugh hope this is wrong…
Oh no! I’m so sorry that this is impacting admission decisions, @raincat and everyone else waiting on Frost. I hope it gets sorted out quickly.
Thanks for sharing. So frustrating but understandable.
Based on past years’ notification patterns, many, including myself thought that Northwestern would release on the 20th. Instead notification will be on the 24th as announced on Instagram.
Son is also still waiting on Temple. I’ve read other students, non music, get accepted after only one week since application submission. (They have rolling admissions). It’s been three weeks since he submitted his video audition. So I have to wonder how much admissions is impacted by recent events.
I’m new this forum and I’m sorry that I didn’t find this earlier. My D wants to major in music and us parents can’t pick a C note from a D#. She has been looking for jazz and contemporary programs (vocal) and there seem to be only a few schools that have this option available for undergraduate study.
She just got accepted into the School of Jazz & Contemporary Music at the New School with a 24K total scholarship (6K/year) but it still seems terribly pricey. I know very little about this school except for what I found on Google. Some old thread from 2011 on this forum didn’t sound too positive about the facilities at this school. Can someone here which more recent experience at this school comment about this program?
She initially received rejections from UNT, Frost School & USC Thornton so really needed some hope and I’m glad the New School came through. Her top choice though is Berklee. She went to the summer program their last year and loved it. She auditioned for Berklee a few weeks ago and is dying to hear from them. She’s also applied to Humber (Toronto) & Leeds (UK) and waiting to hear from them too.
Thank you for all your help.
@SpartanDrew has a daughter at New School with lots of positive things to say!
Anyone else on pins and needles waiting for Oberlin? The rest of the decisions have come out of the blue. This is the first time we actually have a decision hour that we’re waiting on…
@SpartanDrew, anything you can elaborate on your daughter’s experience at the school and your insights about them would be much appreciated (by me).
Hello @bunty2772 Feel free to PM me with questions. My daughter is a vocalist and loves the program. It’s very different from the others you’d mentioned however. She also spent 2 summers at Berklee but HATED the program. Was not a fit for her at all which was surprising to me. She went from thinking it would be her top choice school to not even applying there despite being one of the very few offered scholarship during the big blowout concert night. But I know so many kids who absolutely love it so there is a fit for everyone. Happy to help in any way.
FYI we got our daughter home on a flight last night thank goodness. She was maybe one of 20 passengers on a huge plane out of LGA at 4:45 on a Friday afternoon. Crazy times…
and @raincat I’m bummed out that my Frost prediction streak has come to an end. BOOO lol. I bet Monday is the day. I’ve looked for this year’s U Miami thread and can’t find it. Wondering if anyone is seeing the dreaded green circle…LOL
Thanks much @SpartanDrew . I’ll DM you with my questions. And I’m so glad that she is back home safe.
@SpartanDrew It looks like I need 15 posts here before I can send DM’s to anyone. I obviously don’t want to spam these forums just to DM you. Would you be ok if we exchanged messages on my thread here that I started yesterday on this same topic so I don’t pollute this thread? Thanks again.
