@hokie95 Yes, thanks for mentioning that, as we have to add that. 2K over 4 years is a nice bonus.
Well, after talking with my son this weekend, he’s about ready to pull the trigger on WVU for engineering. Does anyone have any insight on dormitory options? I see some cost differences between some of the options, but we didn’t visit any dorms during our campus visit so I’m flying a bit blind.
Soooo many videos on YouTube which take you “inside” the dorms . When we toured, we went into the Quads - group of dorms starting mostly with the letter B, if I remember correctly . Those were newer traditional style dorms ( as opposed to suites) and if I know myself, were probably cheaper . Very nice though and my son’s pick if he ends up there . If he’s pulling the trigger on a decision, I recommend he joins the students class of 2024. Gleaning lots of info from there .
Congrats on being done ! Soooo jealous of you being close to a decision . We’re no where near one in our camp  . Going to a WVU this weekend for an audition to see if the kid can get a music talent award . The 16k offered isn’t quite enough . Seeing what music dept offers before appealing .
Thanks, I’ll check that out. My son is looking for Chemical Engineering, so we had fewer options starting out than you would have for Music. WVU was much more accommodating on merit aid, and that made the decision a bit easier. Very glad this long deliberation is over! Are you OOS? Is the music talent award for band, or for a music major? My son plans to be in the marching band for fun.
My out of state son was accepted in October and will be studying Biology. Visited campus last August. Merit Aid pkg is appealing-(approx. 14K + additional local scholarships)
2.9 UWGPA
3.5 WGPA
1260 SAT
Also accepted to Penn State Main campus, Eberly College of Science. Only 6K offered in aid. Tuition approx 48K for out of state. No visit yet and doubt we are taking one.
Let’s Go WVU! Haha…Easy decision from a financial stand point. Both are great schools but close to 170K for Penn State over 4 years vs 100K for WVU.
Have already put deposit down on for housing ( he’s going to be staying at the downtown campus close to his classes) . We are excited for him!
@JPE Award for music major . OOS Marching Band SHOULD be fun . My kid will be in it as well .
Welcome @MDTerp90 . Never visited Penn State either. Was not feelin’ it .
Nice, we’ll see you in Morgantown.
@MDTerp90 We’re in state, and PSU still made no financial sense. Didn’t even apply.
I think my boy will be stayiing in Braxton, on Evansdale.
@JPE hey there - I’m the mother of a current freshman at WVU. We also are from PA, where not a single public university made much sense at all. Sigh.
She’s not engineering, but I can offer a few tips.
First, I’m sure there is, or will be, a parents of 2024 Facebook page created - join it! So much great info will be shared there.
Second: your kid (all y’all’s kids, really) must must must MUST go on the Adventure WVU summer thing. Don’t doubt me, just make your kid go, even if they loathe people, the outdoors, all social things. The uni subsidizes it; it’s only $95, added to your bill, trust me on this, DO IT. If there’s one geared toward your kid’s major, do THAT one.
Third: Strongly recommend the LLC dorms. My kid made great friends at Adventure WVU (major-specific trip) and they all met up again in the LLC dorm. This made the college transition SO much easier.
Fourth: my kid’s roomie is in marching band. Expect them to have to be there one/two weeks before the rest of the students show up. It’s a great band and the pre-season practice is pretty intense.
Lemme know if I can help with other stuff.
Let’s Go!
@Gatormama thanks for the info. There’s no convincing my kid to go on Adventure WVU - he really DOES detest the outdoors and nothing I can say will make him change that view. He got bitten once, had to go to ER and that’s scarred him for life, I guess. I think it WILL be a great transition to college but he feels that the week before with Marching Band will be enough. I wish they had an Adventure WVU where they aren’t camping. That would be sooooo much better for kids who don’t like the outdoors
I believe there are several that are based in cabins with day activities - not treks for days through the wilderness. My kid was in a cabin
Will have to take another look-see. But I know my kid. He’ll say… "BUT I have to walk THROUGH the wilderness with a flashlight to get to the bathrooms like on my Sophomore Biology trip " ?
Wow, thank you so much for the tip. My son is an Eagle Scout, so I am sure he will be all in for an outdoor adventure. I’ll look it up. I’ll also take you up on your facebook tip - never even thought of that, so thanks!
He just committed this past week, and chose the dorm with the LLC for engineering. I don’t think the exact room was available but I believe he’s on the same floor. We’re going to miss Decide Days, but are looking forward to orientation in June.
We’re really excited about this next chapter with WVU.
@Gatormama Talked to my son and he’s definitely doing the adventure camp.
@BenniesMom1 What does your son play? We will be auditioning May 2 for marching band and will certainly be at band camp. Regarding the adventure camp, if your son had a bad experience camping before, it may make all the more sense to send him to give him a positive outdoor experience. To learn to love the outdoors is certainly educational and will pay huge dividends at such an early age. As a boy scout parent, I can’t tell you how many awesome moments I’ve experienced, seeing kids who thought they hated the outdoors change their mind after getting some experience.
I also would again suggest trying really hard to send him on the Adventure WVU thing. There are service-based weeks, where you’re doing not much, if any, heavy duty wilderness stuff; more oriented to community activities. The thing is to get to know fellow students, so you’re not feeling so lost and alone the first few weeks. You never know if you’ll meet a lifelong friend.
