Class of 2025 National Merit Discussion

Is the college on page 3 or 4 of this leaflet?

Yes, it is. Does that mean we go ahead and add the college in the NMSC portal?

I think I’m confused about the language about not receiving two NM scholarships, but another thread indicates that adding college in the portal doesn’t preclude consideration for a NMS or corporate-sponsored awards.

Are you talking about adding a college as a first choice college? If so, that isn’t a commitment and doesn’t stop you from being considered for the NMSC $2500 or a corporate scholarship.

Do you or your spouse work for any of the companies in the leaflet? Is your student 100% committed to that college?

The $4K from the university is better than a $2500 scholarship from NMSC. Unless there is a possibility that a corporate entity might give you more than $4K, I would probably list the college now.

Thanks, this makes sense. Very helpful.

So C25 made finalist, but none of the 3 possibles remaining on the list offer national merit scholarships. Therefore, we’re currently trying to figure out if there’s any benefit to changing the first-choice college (which, at present, is a college that took themselves off the list with their comparatively tiny merit aid offer, and their national merit add-on wouldn’t fix that).

My S2025, 4th child and third NMF was notified in his portal. He will be attending UA (Bama) most likely CE/MBA on the 5 year plan like his sister. And done!

My daughter is a NMF; the college she committed to as a Freshman in the fall gives a small NMF scholarship; and I work for a company who gives the NMF children of employees a larger scholarship than what the college gives.

You mentioned “Unless there is a possibility that a corporate entity might give you more than $4K, I would probably list the college now.” Does this mean my daughter should NOT list her college in the NM portal?

I think you meant to reply to @lkg4answers, so tagging them here so they see your response.

For most (but not all) colleges, students don’t need to declare first choice until May. Check the deadline for the college your daughter committed to.

NMSC and corporate scholarships are usually awarded sometime in March. Unless the college requires students to declare them as first choice earlier, I think I would wait it out and see if the corporate scholarship might come through.

Help. Still waiting to find out if my daughter is a finalist as our school is notoriously slow in communicating and we have not received any mail from National Merit this week or last month.

I read above where we can check her National merit portal. We looked at the one where her application was submitted but do not see any decision information. Is that the correct portal? Where should we see the decision. Does another portal exists?

Appreciate any guidance or help that can be provided.

The same website, where your child uploaded the finalist application. They now have a secondary verification via email. Once you log in, the finalist letter is at the bottom as a PDF.
My S25 also hasn’t received anything yet from his school/principal: a.k.a the certificate or recognition. They did something after the semifinalist announcements.

Curious. How important is it to update universities of Finalist status at this point? Could it make difference in merit offers coming out in mid-March (e.g. State Schools, like South Carolina Honors college) or difference in acceptance to highly selectives (privates like Vandy or Wash U)? I feel like such a large percentage of semifinalists make finalist, so not sure how significant the update would be for more money or acceptance offers?

Thanks but still not seeing the pdf. Am I missing something. Will add screen shot in a min

It seems about right; here’s my S25:

Was this submitted after the deadline?

Thanks for Sharing.

I do not believe we missed the date. What was the due date?
