Class of 2027 National Merit Discussion

I thought that I would create a discussion thread for the Class of 2027. Although NMFs will not be named for over a year, I wanted to start a thread since the first few rounds of PSAT scores have been released!

Compass Prep predicts lower quaifying scores for the Class of 2027. This is not surprising after the record highs in some states for the Class of 2026.

The article is up, but I cannot share a link.

Thanks for sharing - it was pretty easy to find with a quick search. I hope their predictions hold true! My S27’s score would just equal this year’s semifinalist cutoff, but this prediction would put him one over their projected cut off.

We are in the same boat. We’ve been researching schools offering scholarships to NMSF.

Thanks for getting this group started. I’ve just begun researching options for S27 who scored a 225/1490 in WA state and is looking for aerospace & mechanical engineering programs. This was never on our radar so there’s a lot to take in as we try to understand the options. Thanks also for sharing the Compass Prep info about cutoffs.

Are PSAT scores already released to colleges, or in some way public, in the junior year? I ask because S27 just received an email from a college referencing his score and inviting him to review their National Merit Program, even though we’re months out from NMF’s official announcement.

D27 has already started looking at schools for NM. Selection index was 227 so safe in this assumption.

She wants to go to med school so the plan is to get undergrad with zero debt. We’re in TX so started by visiting Texas Tech and UTD. (Doesn’t like weather in Houston area or anything about TAMU)

She much prefers the Tech campus aesthetic and vibe of the campus even though it’s obvious UTD is also a good school.

S23 received Brown Scholarship at TAMU and is studying aerospace there. He’s super happy with the program and connections.

We heard great things about the TAMU aerospace and NM programs - I’m so glad to hear your S23 is experiencing the same. Wish they had a bigger OOS population, but I’m hoping we can visit once they publish their NM fall visit day.

If your child has strong campus leadership qualities/record they will be a good candidate for the Brown award which makes it nearly a full ride. One of the cool opportunities my son got was a chance to go to Italy for 3 weeks prior to freshman year with members of the incoming cohort and faculty mentors. There was a cost but it was subsidized by the university. He made forever friends on this trip.

If your son is named D*****, pretty sure we had lunch with him today at Brown Scholars Day - great guy, lots of useful advice to DS.

Art released his updated predictions for 2027 cutoffs.

Hoping he’s right!! :crossed_fingers:
