Class of 2028 admissions

We went to the Admitted Students Day on Feb 10th and liked USF a lot. We were told that freshman housing after early March cannot be guaranteed and quite likely, people applying for housing after this may be put on standby. Getting a housing spot in early March will involve paying the $200 enrollment fee and the $50 housing application fee. We are still waiting to hear back from other colleges. Anyone else in the same predicament?

Yes, same predicament here. However, I thought you only had to pay the $50 deposit and then the $35 for the orientation to be part of the room selection process. And that housing contract could be canceled if decide to non-enroll or there is no assignment.

The $35 Orientation fee can only be paid once the $200 enrollment deposit is paid. The lady in Housing we spoke to did say that due to the delay in FAFSA this year, there could be students/families that decide to not enroll for freshman housing in early March till the financial aid package is finalized.

As a side note, as an OOS family we are partial to Florida publics - S23 goes to FSU and is loving it. The OOS tuition for Florida publics is almost the same as our in-state Rutgers and is great value for money. Many of our in-state friends are simply shocked when we tell them this.

We are going to admitted students day in March (23rd).
S24 wants to go study abroad probably in Italy for the fall semester. So, we are working on that. It requires visa and housing, etc.
He plans to start at USF in Spring '25.
He wants to see if he has an outside chance at UF. That result comes in few weeks.

S23 at FSU is in the First year Study Abroad program at Valencia for Fall & Spring and then will be at Florence for the Summer. Study Abroad is a really good experience and I am sure your son will enjoy it. Good luck to him for UF! Our tour guide at USF last weekend is a Business major and said she chose USF over UF. I really believe we will see much more interest in USF now. They have been the fastest rising university in USNWR rankings over the past 10 years and their admittance to the American Association of Universities last year is also testament to this. Go Bulls!

Thanks for sharing @nj04. Is study abroad in first year good? I feel academically better to do it in 1st year. Our friends with kids in college say it may impact his forming friendships at USF.
We want him to choose USF as it will be cost effective for us and he can use some of the savings for Law school later.

My son applied on Dec 19. We have not heard back from USF
Anyone from that time period got a decision yet?

Someone had mentioned that they got acceptance for early December application recently. So, you may receive in a few weeks most likely.

I heard that you can take courses in any of the campuses. I’m not sure if there is some minimum requirement that you need to take in your assigned campus.

FSU has been running the first year Study Abroad program (called FYA) at their own centers for over 25 years now. They emphasized that first year is the best time to go - you can complete many of the required gen eds in a much smaller classroom setting. As you get into later years after you enter your major, finding the right semester-long Study Abroad program with the required major-related courses becomes much more difficult. The FYA program was one of the top reasons S23 chose FSU. In your case, it looks like the Study Abroad program is with a partner university and may not have many participating USF students, unlike FSU. That may be a consideration then as your son would arrive in campus a semester later. Having said that, IMO, the pros of the semester-long Study Abroad program (huge personal growth, ability to travel in Europe, immersion in a different culture, much smaller classes etc.) far outweigh the cons. Your son would still have 3.5 years to make friends at USF and the university is large enough that he can find his set of friends.

I applied in August and have not heard back yet, so I think it really depends.

Did you check with admissions office? It shouldn’t take this long.

Yes 3 times. They said to just keep waiting. But I don’t care to much if it happens or not. Not a top choice for me or anything, especially if I get into FSU tomorrow or UF next week.

If your application is complete and submitted in August, USF sends acceptances by now.
This seems odd.
What is your major intended and are you in-state?

Management major OOS. Last piece of application arrived 9/11.

Either way, they should give you a decision by now for taking the application fee!

We decided to bite the bullet and pay the USF admission fee so that we can secure on-campus housing at USF which is quite limited. Other campus visits for admitted students will only be in mid-March to mid-April and it may too late by then for USF housing. This is in the top 3 for S24 at this point of time and we don’t want to risk losing out on on-campus housing by waiting. We are also waiting to hear back from some places where he got deferred. All in all, we are very thankful for the choices he has.

We’re planning to put in the deposit for USF. It is the preferred match.

That’s great to know. Were you able to achieve closure on the Study Abroad program?
