Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

Daughter accepted to NYU (and, to the surprise of no one, not a dime of aid but she’d decided she didn’t want to be there before they sent the acceptance, yet the confidence boost was great); waitlisted at Miami/Frost (which was so hard for her because of their effusive feedback coupled with a 4.1 wGPA and 33 ACT); she’s accepting Loyola New Orleans with a really generous merit and talent package (confirmed when I called to negotiate for more that it was collectively the highest total award available).

I have only posted once before but I’m an avid lurker and I’m so grateful for the insights, feedback and wisdom offered here. Congratulations to everyone’s kiddos and families, and so many thanks for sharing in your collective journeys. Your shared experiences and advice have helped me stay sane enough to help our girl make the best right decision for right now. May all of our artists find the right places to grow and shine!

This is from Julliard website:

Audition Results
You will receive notification of your admission status (admit, waitlist, or deny) through your application status page no later than April 1. Should you be admitted and enroll, your final official transcripts, indicating your graduation date, must be received by July 1.

Daughter already knew, but waiting for merit.

Has anyone applied for UBC? Does anyone know when their admissions decisions come out? I wasn’t able to find any information on their website

These Peabody financial results are a bit troubling. Does anyone have recent experiences with the school in terms of its music programs? Including the academic side of the program and whether undergraduate voice students have many performance opportunities?

I don’t know about voice, but for instrumental at Peabody, I know a student who basically waited until the last day to commit to a school and played two schools’ offers against each other. By the end of April, Peabody went from costing a lot to costing almost nothing. The same thing happened at the other school. In the end, the student chose the other school anyhow. I think as students decline admissions offers that may have some money attached, if you wait, then you might get some of that money depending on how much they want you to attend. Peabody isn’t known for high merit aid as far as I’ve heard, but it may pay to try and wait it out until the end.

@operalovermom D24 and friends have had a more positive merit experience - they do very strongly say to contact them if any concerns. I guess these things are always dependent on studio spots in any year , etc etc

Has anyone heard from UMiami Frost for graduate admissions yet?

Has anyone heard anything from CCM on merit? We’ve heard on academic scholarships but nothing on merit. It’s so affordable to begin with so less critical, but still curious.

We have not received anything in writing but the professor called yesterday and left a voicemail saying that an offer is coming. Was hoping to have it today to see the full picture but looking unlikely.

Nothing yet. We are visiting CCM on Monday for a sample lesson, and if no offer comes by then, we will ask the professor.

Nope, still waiting on Juilliard…

Email from CCM professor to studio applicants that CCM scholarships are going out next week. Was double confirmed by a friend who was at MT admitted students weekend, who said scholarships are coming next week!

Hi, all! After a rough week (personally for our family), I think we’ve narrowed down our decision between two schools: UMich SMTD and IU Jacobs. We’ve had excellent offers with merit and scholarship money from these schools and both schools offer wonderful opportunities, so D24 can’t lose! Money is important, but we are also looking at the big picture: culture, fit, ensemble potential, studio vibe…all of it! Fortunately, we actually have a little time now to consider this. I can’t wait to see the next chapter of our stories! So thankful for this thread to turn to during this whirlwind season.

Sorry to hear about your rough week. I saw your daughter’s offers on the acceptances thread. Nice! Congratulations! If you have any questions about Jacobs feel free to message me. I have had 2 kids attend there–voice and jazz guitar–and it’s looking like my youngest will be there in the fall for voice. I also managed the Jacobs Parents Facebook group for a couple of years. I don’t claim to know everything but am happy to help if I can! Wishing her all the best in her decision!

My son (undergrad music ed piano/perc) is also seriously considering Jacobs vs. Eastman vs. Bienen. I would love to know what made all of your kids choose Jacobs! Thanks so much!

Jacobs top two for our son too!
Any info would be great!
Especially curious about things to do, where students hang out, will a car be necessary eventually (since the downtown is smaller) etc.
We visited, and the campus is beautiful! Just want to make sure the surrounding area offers enough variety over 4 years.
Thanks!!!

I remember how painful it was for my son to decide: he applied to four schools and had great offers from all of them, he agonized over the decision and made long pro/con lists. Narrowed it down to two in the end and the final category on the pro/con list was “What I want” and he went with his gut. Turned out to be an awesome decision. If it “feels right” there’s nothing wrong with using that as a criteria! Good luck. They’re both awesome schools.

Big factor–hard to say no to the opportunity to study at one of the best music schools in the world at instate tuition cost! But also, almost all of my husband’s family attended IU, and they all had fantastic experiences there and are super hardcore alumni. Many of them currently live in Bloomington. Bloomington is a very vibrant town–beautiful, walkable, diverse due to the campus, lots of great restaurants, great proximity to several wonderful state parks, and within a few hours drive of several major cities–Indianapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Louisville. It is also within an hour of the Indianapolis International Airport.

My oldest had several other options, but the Jacobs BSOF degree (Bachelors of Science with an Outside Field) checked her boxes and allowed her to get basically a double major with Voice and History in 4 years. At her other options that was going to take 5 years at higher tuition. That outside field has been a blessing. Working in a museum on campus helped pay for her VP Masters (which she also completed at Jacobs) and that experience gave her skills which have gotten her flexible administrative assistant jobs that pay the rent while she auditions for singing gigs now. My son put all his eggs in the Jacobs basket and thankfully was accepted. He however did not make it through his degree–Covid shutdown, health issues got the best of him. They both also connected with studio profs in their departments before making their final decisions–sample lessons sealed the deal.

They both also liked that the music school feels like a conservatory in its intensity and in its configuration–all the music buildings are close together in one corner of campus with dorm options right there–but it is on a Big 10 campus with All. The. Things–sports, all kinds of people, student organizations, vast academic offerings, etc. That last point is probably the biggest draw for my youngest who is considering it for next year.

Of course I can’t speak to your son’s other options since I don’t know a lot about them and every kid has different needs, but that is a breakdown of my kids’ experiences with Jacobs.
