Quick question about appealing merit scholarships. When you send the email, do you actually attach the letter from the other school that offered better merit aid, or is it sufficient to name the school and cite the amount? Thank you!

For sure attach a pdf of each of the other offers.

Thank you!

We have a decision! :tada: S has chosen to attend Cleveland Institute of Music for composition! After LOTS of deliberation, discussions with current students and parents of current students (because there has been some real drama there of late), and a successful financial aid appeal, he is headed to his top school. SO happy the process is over, though it felt really surreal for him and for us when he checked the I ACCEPT box.

This forum and all of you have been invaluable to me and our family during this process!!!

Congratulations! We are thinking it will be the last day before we decide! This waiting is awful. Still waiting on some appeals and I was told by a few schools we likely won’t know until next week…I am hoping we have all of the updates. Must be amazing to be able to move on to the next

We are right there with you! Agonizing between Jacobs, UMich, and Bienen (music ed/instrumental). All have different pros and cons. :frowning: Worried about the gen ed requirements plus required marching band at Jacobs for my ADHD son who was hoping not to take another math class for the rest of his life. Big sigh.

I’m not sure about music ed major math requirements, but I’m familiar with music performance majors at Jacobs, and this class fulfills their math requirement. A section of it relates to mathematics used in music. Most find it to be a much easier pill to swallow than finite or calc:). My oldest actually really loved the class. My youngest, who is going this next year, has it on her radar! THE MATHEMATICS OF DECISION AND BEAUTY at IU Bloomington: Courses

Don’t worry… there will be more stuff to agonize over once you’ve committed and moved on, lol. Seriously though, hang in there! You’re almost to the end!

D is still very torn on our end, and what a roller coaster. She loved her Eastman visit and the teacher, but was worried suddenly about the confined nature of the school in downtown Rochester even though that never bothered her before. She liked Oberlin overall and the college setting, but the small town vibe didn’t quite appeal. She was given a large music scholarship at Emory, so we checked that out and all of a sudden she wanted a normal college experience. I think the stress of choosing and such different options is getting to her! I have no idea how all this will turn out!

My son is struggling as well. He has been accepted at great schools and all have professors he likes and believes will be a good fit for him. There is only one school at this point we feel financially will work for us but appeals are still out and we were told we may not know full financials until next week. He also hates that he will have to essentially tell professors he made another choice after starting a bit of a relationship. He knows they are used to this but he is dreading telling them. It is going to come down to the wire for us as well due to the financial delays

Our son was really nervous about writing the instructors with whom he had cultivated a relationship to notify them about going elsewhere as well. They were all incredibly kind and generous about it, wishing him well for the future and hoping to cross paths again.

My son went into his search thinking he wanted more of a conservatory experience and the further we got into visits and auditions, the further he swung the other way. He LOVES his ā€œnormal college experienceā€ (as you put it!). GL…it’s not an easy decision!

It was such a teacher carousal this year though - I think all the teachers she wanted and contacted with 1 exception are leaving to go to other schools. McGill has multiple good violin teachers - hoping for the best!

We have had difficulty with teacher preferences, too, with their having full studios (grad students who suddenly wanted to stay and extra year!). So, now we’re struggling with not having an identified teacher at our potential schools. :frowning:

I’ve been quietly following along… my son (viola) was late to the game in deciding to pursue music, and wants to do a dual degree w/ science or something. No conservatories, but accepted to University of British Columbia School of Music, Baylor, waitlisted at UNT and haven’t heard yet. Still waiting for a few things, but thinking it will be UBC. He also applied computer science to many other schools, and got a full tuition scholarship to Cal Poly which he could add a music major (BA) but UBC will give him a BM degree… Down to the wire!!

Wow, getting into Cal Poly has been tough for a lot of applicants this year!

Has he considered attending Cal Poly and continuing lessons and extracurricular performance, with music electives or minor? That path can work for some and can lead to grad work in music, or a tech. career with music ā€œon the side.ā€
