I went overseas for a few weeks and came back to so much activity! CONGRATS to all who have made the decision. And GOOD LUCK to those still making the decision.
May can bring on some feelings of “buyer’s remorse” for you and/or your kid. Did you really make the right decision? Did you really get the best deal? The “woulda, coulda, shoulda” thoughts can pop up. This is normal…and usually temporary. June turns to all the fun “lasts” and prep for the big move (sometimes only a few short months away).
I’m very exciting for you all. My D did a show a week ago and one of the other vocalists involved she had met her Freshman year in her studio (well over a decade ago). She was 3 years older than my D but stayed on in the studio for grad school. My D always greatly admired her. They now perform together on and off professionally. While a BM can have as many ups and downs as this audition process (just maybe not as intense…more slow and dragged out to add some flavor to your life!), it’s all good in the end.
Yes, it was an option. UBC came in with full tuition for first year, and partial + potential additional music scholarships for following years. He’s accepted! ;). He really loved the env, and the studio teacher has been so welcoming and exciting.
SO now that the year is coming to an end and our kids are saying goodbye to their HS teachers, anyone have thoughts on a good gift for the primary instrument teacher? S24 has been with her for 6 years (and my S21 studied for her for two years but dropped out senior year). She is professor, conductor and private teacher in addition to teaching my S at a precollege program.
My kid gave all his teachers/conductors who offered recommendations an insulated mug from his chosen university. Private teacher always got gift card(s).
Still agonizing over the decision. Unfortunately UM SMTD and Jacobs are still coming in at over $33,000/year and we just can not make that work. Thankfully Boston University (great offer) and University of Georgia (can make it work) are still in the running but need to decide! CMU appeal is not back but he is thinking that is not where he wants to be. We have a couple schools he was admitted to that we have also removed as contenders but this is so hard!
Hi all! Just a cross-post from our Acceptances thread:
As decision dates approach, if you are willing to share your decision I can condense our list and complete the story. I realize people are still working with financials and aren’t ready to commit, so just a reminder for when you do!
Hi, never heard of Longy, do you mind sharing where it is located? A little early to be looking at Master’s programs for our son, but one thing we’ve learned from this journey is that early is usually better than late.
Longy is located in Cambridge, MA — right near Harvard Square. It’s a very small school (275 students) and was acquired by Bard College maybe 8 years ago? It’s all grad students and primarily MM. But they have a small cohort of in-person music education students. It is a VERY hands-on program and designed for career changers or recent grads who did not major in music education (my kid was a music BA, but others are performance, comp, minor in music, etc.). I have heard great things from people who teach in the Boston area and have worked with Longy music ed students.
Longy used to have an UG vocal program. My DD considered it because they offered an UG+G degree in 5 years. I guess they are now purely a graduate school?
My son finally made his decision. He walks in the door after his final HS concert and states he is going to the University of Delaware. I think my wife and I were more excited than him. I asked him if he was less stressed now, he comment was not yet.
My daughter got off the waitlist for Univ of Miami Frost yesterday via a call from the school. Such a weird process. I think she will probably stick with McGill but we are curious what they will offer!
The process is partially dictated by all the students accepted who waited until May 1 to decline admission to all the alternative schools, freeing up spaces in various programs (and scholarship and grant money). There should be an extra spot at Jacobs and Eastman since yesterday, for example.
Thank you, that explains why it didn’t come up in our various lists but might have a place now that he’ll be keeping his eyes opened for graduate school programs over the next 3 or 4 years. We probably walked right by it on our walking tours of Harvard and every Boston area college we could find, ironically.
It’s not necessarily a one to one correlation between someone declining and someone coming off the wait list. Studios accept more than they can handle to factor in yield, so if many others have committed, there may be no waitlist movement.
