Class of 28 Undergrad/Class of 26 Grad: a thread to capture the journey of applications, pre screens, tours and auditions

93,000 estimated cost a year I was like yeah no - McGill was always in top 4 - we are good and won’t have to sell kidneys to pay for it :rofl::rofl:

Totally!!!

Anyone else heard from Frost WL? Specifically interested in voice/MADE students but any info helps

I replied to the acceptances thread! Thanks for keeping track for all of us.

I have replied to the acceptance thread as well. Thank you so all for wonderful advice along the way!

Our journey is finally over (as of yesterday evening). It was so difficult with so many great offers; the decision changed about 100 times over the past week! I have messaged @TigerLily52 with the final decision for the other thread. Just a couple of notes that might be helpful to future readers:

  1. We did get off of the Oberlin Conservatory Waitlist on 5/1 (and they gave a full two weeks to consider the offer). Note that on 4/30 we were literally told in writing that the waitlist was officially closed and would not be re-evaluated until late May, with the earliest possible notification date being late May/early June.
  2. We did ask to be re-considered for merit scholarship at UMICH (initial offer was $0). They responded in less than 24 hours with an offer of $12k. So, it never hurts to ask! Full disclosure - this was on 5/2 after the deposit deadline of 5/1 and we had put a deposit down on the deadline day - so either/both of those factors may have contributed to their offer.
  3. Sometimes the perfect fit will be an unexpected place (we are going with a different school, not #1 or #2 above), but you realize it offers everything you want artistically.

Best of luck to everyone!

Just wanted to share my story as reading everyone’s stories last year helped me a lot

Sooo…here goes:

My story was a little different, as I decided to apply to some music theatre/acting, some classical voice programs, and some contemporary voice/songwriting programs. I also had some academic programs as a safety net but I won’t include those for the purposes of this thread. Anyways…here goes:

Programs Applied To: American MT/Acting, Baldwin Wallace VP/MT/Acting, Berklee Songwriting, Binghamton MT, Carnegie Mellon MT/Acting/VP, UCLA VP, UCSB VP/Theatre, CU Boulder MT, CCM MT/Acting, UConn Acting, Elon MT, Emerson MT, Fredonia MT, Geneseo MT, Hofstra VP, LIU MT, MMC MT, UMiami Songwriting, Michigan MT/Acting/VP, Nazareth MT, NYU Tisch Acting, Northwestern Theatre, Peabody VP, Penn State VP, Rider MT, USC Acting, Susquehanna VP, Syracuse MT/Acting, UTampa MT, Tulane MT, Wagner MT

Prescreens Passed: UCSB, Fredonia, UMiami, Peabody, Penn State, Rider (redirected to Acting), Syracuse Acting Only

No Prescreen: American, Baldwin Wallace, Berklee, Binghamton, UConn, CU Boulder, Geneseo, LIU, MMC, NYU Tisch, Northwestern, Susquehanna

Failed Prescreen: All Others

So…prescreens didn’t go great. I’d expected to fail some…but so many? I’d been accepted to All State twice, All Eastern, was Drama Club president, and I was Paulette in my school musical Legally Blonde last year. Again and again, I was shot down from schools I thought to be safeties. Then, I passed prescreens for the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, which had been one of my top choices for a long time, and some hope was restored. But one problem: Early Action auditions were the same weekend as All State. I thought long and hard, and eventually decided I would take the risk and audition Regular Decision instead. Until two days before I was meant to leave for All State when I failed my Carnegie Mellon prescreen. CMU, of course, had been “the dream”. And once that dream was crushed, I knew I had to prioritize my future, and I pivoted at the very last minute and flew down to Miami to audition. My audition was one of the last of the day. I was so nervous the entire day, I drank so much water, I barely got any sleep the night before. And…my audition wasn’t great (at least I thought I could’ve done better). I was positively heartbroken, but I tried to keep my hopes high. I decided to sign with MTCA then, so I could get a bit of help with the theatre programs still in the mix. Then, right in the middle of audition season I got WHOOPING COUGH. Yeah. So the rest of my voice auditions didn’t go so great, including my Peabody audition (which was another I was super bummed about but that’s okay). And. I got ensemble in my senior musical, which absolutely broke me. Then, the one great school I’d auditioned for before getting sick, Miami: Decision day came, and I’d gotten deferred. Heartbreak after heartbreak. I was losing hope quickly, and I started mass applying to journalism programs thinking there was no way I was going to music school. I still went through with the remaining auditions, including NYU, which had been my ‘childhood dream school’. And…it went really well! I’d taken to heart my MTCA acting coach’s advice and felt I did the very best I could. But I still knew my chances were slim. Rejections started coming in quickly, but I still held out my hope that I’d get into Miami in regular decision. Then came decision day (which happened to fall during my school musical weekend) and…waitlisted. I got into George Washington University for journalism and assumed I’d be going there. Until…I GOT INTO NYU!!! (And Berklee the next day, but none of that mattered anymore!) I was in Disney when I got the news, and it was truly the most magical day of my life. All this heartache felt worth it…until we saw the price tag, and got the email that we’d be getting no help from NYU. $99k a year…we couldn’t do it! Who could?! I was heartbroken all over again. With decision time coming soon, we were between NYU, George Washington for journalism, and Penn State for vocal performance. I loved American MT a lot, but there was a lot of antisemitism happening on campus and my mom refused to let me go. I immediately knew GW wasn’t for me upon touring, so it was Penn State or NYU (with a LOT of debt). I really did like Penn State, but it was NYU that I’d always wanted…and finally I decided to commit to NYU. But Miami still remained in my mind and heart. A friend who was a freshman at Hofstra had told me to go where I felt most at home, and I’d felt most at home at Miami. But that wasn’t an option…until I got the call. I’d been worried about NYU with how much debt I’d be in, and I’d still felt a piece of my heart had been left behind in Miami. But Miami came through with a huge scholarship that left me with no debt. So…we made the switch! And…UMiami Contemporary Voice/Songwriting 2028!!! It was hard to pivot from NYU, given the name and feeling like I was betraying my younger self by not following her dream. But dreams change…and that’s okay! People always say you end up where you’re meant to be, and this whole time, I was convinced they were full of it. But by the end, I was choosing between two dream schools, and I’m going to a top 15 music school, I couldn’t be more thrilled!

Final Results:

Acceptances: American MT, Baldwin Wallace VP, Berklee Songwriting, Binghamton MT, Geneseo MT, Hofstra VP, NYU Tisch, Penn State VP, Susquehanna VP, UTampa MT

Waitlists: UCSB Theatre (accepted!), UMiami Songwriting (accepted!), Rider Acting (accepted!), Wagner MT

Final Decision: University of Miami Frost School of Music Contemporary Voice/Songwriting

Congrats!! When I saw your name here, my first thought was…I wonder if she got into Miami in the end…and you did!! Of course, I didn’t know but I thought that it was a strong possibility. I remember that you were devastated by the deferral. I thought…it may still work out…but I didn’t want to say that as sometimes people just need to walk through the fire on their own. There’s not much you can say but “hang in there”. A deferral/waitlist in this process CAN work out, as your story shows.

Thanks for sharing as this shows 3 key elements:

You need to trust that the process will work. It requires a lot of blind faith.
It can be a stressful/painful experience and still work. It’s good practice for real life.
And, it’s not over until it’s over…in maybe late May/early June!

Congratulations. I’m very proud of you!! Have a wonderful time at Miami!

Congrats, and thanks for sharing your story. It’s a long and winding road. Wishing you all the best at Miami! Would you mind sharing your experience at Berklee? It’s one of my rising senior’s top choices, but I’m concerned about the major declaration not coming until 2nd year+. When you were awarded admission, were you actually admitted to the Songwriting program? Or is it presumptive knowing that you can’t really declare until you get some of those 1st year common music courses out of the way? He’s an aspiring Music Production & Engineering major, which they indicated at time of our tour is one of the most competitive, so it gives me some pause. Appreciate any advice you have to offer. (He’ll be auditioning on electric guitar.)

It’s not direct admit to any major, but my audition went well! It was off-campus, in NYC. Very kind faculty

Hi there. Your S24’s list is similar to my S25’s - though mine is primarily a guitarist/engineer, applying to Commercial programs as well as MPE. Do you mind telling me where yours ended up? Any anecdotes you can share about merit/content?
