Definitely contact the school directly. We never heard from one of our appeals other than from the teacher, who said she was calling music admissions daily to encourage them to up the award. I sent another email last week, and I got one back almost immediately asking if I’d filled out a form that they never sent me, so I had to fill it out and send it back. We had an updated award the next day. Sometimes things get lost in the shuffle, so it’s always a good idea to confirm that they have all the info.
As for accepting, I wouldn’t do it just yet if you’re still waiting on appeals. Once you commit, you lose your leverage. Some schools will still work with you, but a lot won’t.
We’re still waiting on one second appeal, which I’m hoping we will hear from Monday or Tuesday, and one first appeal, which we have been told will likely come very last minute. But everyone has until 5/1 to commit (some schools have a 5 pm deadline that day in their own time zone, so definitely double check to make sure you don’t miss that), so I’m trying (and usually failing) not to freak out about the last-minuteness of it all.
I havent really reached out to the schools. We got the acceptance thursday and we were hoping to get a word out Friday but nothing come thru. We are working on an email to send out today even if nothing has come thru yet. I’ll try to give them a call this afternoon. Thanks very much.
I definitely do not recommend accepting at two schools. Music is a very small world and it may reflect poorly on your musician’s reputation, thereby impacting future opportunities.
Have you been able to talk with admissions representatives and teachers at both schools? Do you have all financials available? It sounds like you were extended very late offers. Is there a possibility that the schools would extend their deadline if you do not yet have all the information you need?
yes, very good point. I guess we are in a panic trying to sort things out. We did get an initial offer with grants. We just send in an appeal just now hoping his dream school could be more affordable for us. Do you think it at this late stage, there will still be consideration for more merits? We decided to hold off decisions until tomorrow.
Yes. Offers can happen at the very last minute. Stay in close contact with the potential professors and admissions staff. Be calmly proactive. At least on the outside as this process is incredibly stressful.
It is stressful you should contact them tomorrow since it’s decision day to ask if you can have an extension since you’re waiting for an appeal. Do this at whatever schools you are considering.
Does anyone have experience with transferring from one school to another? I am curious about the process, My son has narrowed to two choices and one of them won’t tell him about credit transferrring until after he has enrolled, which to me is one one of the factors he should be weighing.
I’m also curious as to the process of withdrawing from the school he currently attends.
This would be a dealbreaker for us. I do know that some programs have their own specific music theory curriculum order/path which does not always allow interchangeable classes from other schools. But it seems they should be able to give him some type of answer as to which classes/credits will transfer.
School #1 (private): as long as he’s transferring from a NASM school it’s all good and will work out
School #2(large public) : once student commits the credits are evaluated
Prof who transferred twice had to redo theory each time but says has led to a deeper understaning than almost anyone else
I’m more concerned about overall credits. It seems odd and bureaucratic to me to not assess in advance. He’s choosing between two strong programs
Are any of your kids getting invitations to participate in the school’s band - like the marching band, for the football team? My kid keeps getting invited to join the USC Marching Band. He has learned through his high school band that this isn’t really how he wants to spend his time - but wondering if this is something any of your kids considered or experienced at the college level? Fun to think about, anyway.
My non music major daughter continued to play her trumpet in the Pitt Band every year. Shes a junior now, and it has been everything wonderful. My son, who will study percussion performance, is considering marching band for 1 year to get the exposure to it, but he feels to do it every year would take too much time away from his practice and ensembles rehearsals. He needs to get more information at this point.
My kid is very much looking forward to it as he loved high school marching band but I’ve heard so many good things about college marching band as far as finding a group when you first arrive at school. I’d encourage students to try it for the first year.
My son played in PennState’s Blue Band and it was the best experience! It was a big time commitment, but he felt it was worth it. He even got to march in The Rose Bowl Parade! It also helped him establish a large network of friends as soon as he arrived on campus.
