Class of 29 Undergrad/Class of 27 Grad: All Things Related to Music School Applications (prescreens/tours/interviews/auditions/supplements/etc)

Can anyone share information about the vibe at the following schools, especially cello/strings/chamber? SMU, McGill, U Md, Mannes, BU, CU Boulder, App State, U Cinn, IU, U Manitoba, Shendoah(sp?), Glenn Gould School? Student was also given Bama as a rec because of the teacher there, but that’s not his scene at all- might be ok for grad school, but scary for undergrad.
Thanks.

@old_music_prnt thanks for that post. My kid is a few years past doctorate, as are many of their friends, and when I look back at this music forum, I often wonder what folks are seeing as the future path and goal. Maybe that would be an interesting thread.

Although your post shows that nothing is written in stone, and paths may be flexible, I think it also shows the hierarchical nature of the music world and the stress that naturally comes from that. Some opt out at some point to “do their own thing.”

Heading to Frost today, S is very calm, I am not. This is only his second audition after Berklee, and although Berklee went well, nothing is guaranteed. It will be good practice though, as he has six others booked and waiting to hear from four more after prescreens. I’m excited to have the prescreens trickle in, but S is pretty much over it and just wants to get them done.

Good luck to everyone heading to Frost today! My son’s first audition isn’t until Jan 18. I’m starting to get nervous about prescreen results. It seems like last year the Dec 1 submissions started hearing after about a week, which means it could be soon.

I think the students have a lot more “fun” at the auditions. They get to do what they love…even if they may be a bit nervous. For parents, it’s a lot of hurry up and wait and wait and wait. I hope that you get a chance to enjoy a walk around the campus (most are beautiful) and a good meal or two. My favorite part of the auditions was having a good meal together. She was always happy after it was done. And, it was fun to see her thinking about where she’d hang out at that school (me too!). Remember they’ll be moving away soon…so I hope that you can enjoy some time together on the audition weekend!

Good luck!!!

Writing this from our hotel room across the street from the U Miami campus. Already have seen five other music kids carrying guitar cases, snare drums (!) and wearing music logo hats and shirts. S has at least one associate staying at this hotel and knows at least two other students who will be here. So that’s making him feel pretty good.

U of Wisconsin, Madison does it. They stressed to us that general admission is not guaranteed, but I am guessing it is highly likely. I am not sure about any other schools.

Anyone know when prescreen decisions and audition offers typically come out for the Dec 1 or Dec 3 due dates? Do the schools email the kids or do you have to check a portal or something? We applied to 5 schools but got no responses yet.

I have had 3 kids apply to music school. Most prescreen results came mid to late December. I’m pretty sure all of their schools notified by email.

If you go through the thread for last year ("Class of 28 … "), you can see the dates when people post prescreen results from various schools.

We haven’t heard anything yet either. I’ve scoured last year’s thread. It looks like IU started coming out on Dec 8, but that was for their Master’s program. I saw some undergraduate posts around Dec 12/13, but I didn’t see enough info to get a feel for if it came out by studio, or if they did acceptances/rejections in any sort of pattern. UMich and Oberlin were both much later, right before Christmas I think. I didn’t see any posts about CCM or BU to give me an idea for when those will come out (those are the other 2 we’re waiting on). Which schools are you waiting for?

I believe my daughter received her prescreen notification for voice from CCM right around the time her high school went on holiday break last year–so mid December.

BU is one of ours too!

That’s good to know, thanks!

My daughter just got an invitation to audition at UNT today (vocal performance), so they are starting to roll theirs out. I know of someone on another forum whose child got theirs late last week, so they’re obviously not doing them all at once. That’s the only one we’ve heard from so far.

Congratulations to your daughter! That’s great! No prescreen was required at UNT this year for my son (double bass). I’m jealous that you’ve crossed over to knowing your daughter had a successful prescreen review!

@Clara30 @rhochemEmom if you have any questions about UNT my son is there and LOVES it. Just ask

Have you heard anything from IU on the academic acceptance part yet? For some reason, i thought that was going to come sooner? separate from the prescreen process… but am i wrong?
